Hello eveyone ! After Shuma went on his knee and begged me :P I decided to explain some stuffs about charm sniping . As it may get somewhat lenghty I may not post everything at once (I m doing this at work after all lol).

WARNING : This stuff if for perfectionist and completionist. Unless you ABSOLUTLY want that freaking charm you should stay away.

Q : Why would I bother with this ?

A : For those who have a luck spoon down their throat (looking at you Lordamon) their happiness came naturally :D . For less lucky guys like me you can use this method to reduce the abyssmal odds of finding that damn charm you are dreaming about.

Before starting :
Mind you I did say "reduce the odds" there will still be tedious boring stuff to do and there is no guarantee since it stays a bit random. Still I would say you rise the odds from finding the charm from a 1/6000 chance(or more) to a 1/300. I didnt create charm sniping of course this apparently was usable in previous games and found out by some witty japanese informatic ponies so props to them.

Found this out when using Athena's Charm search tool (prop to that guy too he is a killer) but I will explain a bit more about this and what is needed in my next post.

Here I will list all the stuff you needs without explaining why then I will explain later

What you need :
Athena's charm search app (used 0.34b)
Know which charm table you are on (i.e table 10)
Know which charm you are gunning for (ie Hand+5/Free elmnt +7) and more importantly know its RN# (910 in this charm case) (more on this later)

What you need in game :

Access to a G-rank misty peak large monster quest (I always used the rank 8 advanced quest where you hunt a Narga/Rathian/Zinogre)

A set with as low defense as possible with bombardier and if possible, charm chaser, collect +2, speed gather, divine whim (this all help but are optional)
(My set : gunner Azuros helm/glove, narga/lagombi boots (just need 2 slots), leather waist/breastplate, bamboo bow (3 slots) a 2 slot charmer +6 charm) This gives me all previous skills (approprietly gemmed) and around 120 defense

Gourmet tickets for meal (guaranteed felyne explorer)

Make sure both your boats/farm are on standby and do not take your shakas with you

Lg Bombs + and everything you need to combine them in game

Now lets talk a bit about RN# : so wtf is that  ?

This is all guesswork on my side based on what I have read on the web and my in game observation.

Basically there is a table with numbers. From what I have seen mine goes roughly from number 1 to number 5400 and then loops back to 1 when I reach 5400. Your character is at all times positioned on a random number in this table. So how do that number evolve ^o) ?

Well I have no way of verrifying that but I went on the assumption that everything that happens in game rise this number, from you walking in the lobby to a gargwa farting in misty peak or a kelbi hopping around trying to gore you. Of course the rise in this number may be different . You taking a step may rise it by 1 while a gargwa fart may rise it by 20 -_- .

So wtf do i need to worry about that crap ?

Well the thing is the charm you want to find has also a RN# and you can only find it when you are on this RNG#. So basically you start your mining in misty peak and you are on RN# 500 ...if when you end the quest (ie fail 3 times) you are positioned around RN # 900 and have found an enduring charm then you have a damn fair chance to land the big one :D

So How in hell am I supposed to know what my RN# number is ?

You can't !
Well you can but it is a bit random. Basically what will tell you your current position in the RN# is the charm you will find in misty peak. Basically do a misty peak mining run (more about this later). At the end you will get some enduring charms : enter their stats in Athena's App and then right-click on it after it appears. This will give you the RN# and Seed(dont ask me about this one). You will know by how much you missed your mark as well as where you are currently standing in the table.
IMPORTANT : Do not save at the end of that run : In fact never save unless you found the charm you need or want to move up your RN#

Why ? Because completing/failing/giving up missions move up your RN# by a lot. Finding and appraising charms/shards also move it by a lot. So unless you wanna keep those charms..don't save !

You are patronizing us and all but how the hell are we supposed to move the RN# to get closer to our mark then ??

This is the trickiest part in my book. Since pretty much anything you do may or may not move the RN#..how to do it ?

Well the way I found rely on luck but it still can get you where you want :

Doing the rank 6 deserted isle harvest tour and turning in the pass asap moved up my RN# by accurately between 1200 and 1300.

You may need to verify this yourself :
Easy enough : just figure out your current RN# through aforementioned method, do the harvest tour and verify it again by doing a misty peak mining run.

So you can do harvest tour until you find yourseld in a RN# close to your target !

Did it again yesterday but I couldn't get the charm I was gunning for (elmnt ak+5 2 slots)...I only did it for like 2 hours before falling asleep so I guess I have to try a bit more this evening.

Back to my explanations, I will now explain the process for Misty peak runs with the table RN# numbers in mind.
Mind you this may just be me being overly careful but as I have no way to prove I m wrong/right I will still describe it with all the precautions I take.

So :Get your pickaxe, your bombs & materials to combine them, don your equipment then SAVE
One thing before starting : always be as fast you can, taking the minimum number of steps and seconds in every action you take...it s the best way to have identify RN# as reliably as possible

1-Go get a meal : use a gourmet ticket to guarantee you get the felyne explorer skill (Fish + drink)
2-Select a large monster quest in misty peak
3-You should start in secret area, as soon as possible, start gathering the bone pile and mine the node : if you get a shining charm get rid of it by deleting it in your inventory.
4-If you get no enduring charm (rare but happens), give up, DON'T SAVE, Quit the game , again DON'T SAVE, and load back
5-You will restart in moga village, run to the cat and travel to offline bar and restart at 1-
6- When you get an enduring charm suicide bomb right away by using 2 bomb+ and 1 normal bomb (if your defense is similar to mine (160) you may need more or less, the important thing is to always use the same amount of bombs to suicide)
7-You got carted, combine 2 more Lrg Bomb + go out of camp and suicide right away
8-Same as previous
9-Your RN# clock stop ticking once you fail your quest (i think). Appraise your enduring charms. If you landed it good for you : save and you are done. If not, look at the charm stats and enter them in Athena charm search tool and check their RN# : If it is more or less than around 200 from your target, try again from the start. DON'T SAVE, Quit without saving, load back. That way your RN# will still be the same as before the quest and you get to keep all your bombs and more importantly your gourmet meal ticket -> try again from 1-

Your goal here is have RN# results that are sometimes higher sometimes lower than your target. If you are always above or always below you may have to reajust it by either wating a bit more before failing the quest or mining the node less. This is where things get complicated and random.

10-Once you feel you are on the right track and land enduring charms that are very close to your goal, it is just an endurance test...keep doing the same things taking steps as close as possible as your previous runsuntil you get it...

I did it again yesterday aiming for charm elmnt ak+5 2 slots "RN# = 3163. I landed many times on charms which were around RN# 3167, 3200, 3150...but not 3163. So I know I am where I need to be and it is just a matter of keeping at it until you land it...Your RN# shouldn't reset even if you turn off your wii. I will check this evening and see where I stand before resuming trying to get it...

Good luck guys hope this can help and congratulations if you read everything :P

I noticed that in my step 6 I said "When you get an enduring charm" suicide bomb right away. This may be confusing. You can and should get get more than one enduring charm of course so before suiciding gather everything you can from the node and pile !

Guess I layed it out pretty thick and was maybe a tad bit too thorough. Found a thread explaining it in a simpler way and it has some more informations on how to move your RN#
