Rusty, Sarah Jo and Aaron were busy comforting Aidan, after he heard all the fighting between them and his mother. "Where's Mommy?" Aidan asked. "She's moving to a new room," Rusty said, "I guess there is a lot that came out, that I wish hadn't come out." "Yeah," Sarah Jo said, "too much for anyone." "Is she all right?" Aidan asked. "Yes, sweetie, she is," Sarah Jo said, "but she is very angry at all of us. She said something nasty about you too." Aidan looked stricken. "What did she say?" he whimpered. Sarah Jo hated herself for what she was about to say, but Aidan asked her, "She said she wished you hadn't been born," she said as gently as she could. Aidan burst into tears, fleeing to Sarah Jo's arms, she held him close, "I'm sorry, sweetheart," she said softly, "I shouldn't have told you, but that was what she said." "Did Mommy ever love me?" Aidan asked, brokenly. Sarah Jo couldn't bring herself to say it. It was tearing her heart out. How could she even try to tell a six year old child that his own mother hated his guts? "Oh, baby," Aaron said, coming up to his son, "It isn't you, it's me she hates." Aidan sobbed in Sarah Jo's arms. Aaron held him as well. Rusty felt horrible. "Unca Rusty," Aidan whimpered, "can you hug me too?" Rusty's eyes opened, he had never had a kid ask him that. Aaron nodded, "He needs you too," he said, quietly to his best friend. Sarah Jo nodded her assent too. Rusty walked over, and hugged Sarah Jo, Aaron and Aidan. Tears came to Rusty's eyes, and he felt at last a part of a family. Even though he and Katie K. had been married, and they hated one another intensely, he wanted to spare Aidan any hurt. "Are you ready for court, Aaron?" Rusty asked. "Yeah," Aaron said, "and I know Jennifer is going to be there. Who can watch Aidan?" "I'll stay with him," Sarah Jo said, "he may need me, and I don't want Jennifer around him at all." "I agree," Aaron said, "with her behavior, she shouldn't be around him." "OK, I will be ready," Rusty said, "but what about the desk. Sarah Jo?" "Joan is downstairs, and she has everything covered, Rusty, so no worries," Sarah Jo smiled, "Aaron, Is there anyone you want me to call?" "Yeah," Aaron said, "my mother and father, Cathy and Dave Rizzo. They live in Los Angeles. The number is on my desk in the study." Aidan was sobbing into his blankie, holding Rufus tightly. The scene broke Sarah Jo's heart. Just look and see the damage you've done, Jennifer Barrett, Sarah Jo seethed, your son is broken hearted. Thanks to your damned selfishness! "If you'd like, Sarah Jo," Rusty said, "we'll name you as a caregiver too. If you so wish to have that happen." "I'd like that," Sarah Jo said. "it's the least I can do for my part in this disaster. I also filled out a report and you guys have it, detailing Jennifer's recklessness since coming to the Futura." "Don't blame yourself," Aaron said softly, "this isn't your fault. You were blinded like all of us were." "I still feel horrible," Sarah Jo said, "I never wanted to admit what she was." "It's all out now," Rusty said, "and Jennifer will pay for what she did to us." "Aaron," Sarah Jo said, "while I call your parents, could you comfort Aidan?" Aaron nodded. "Rusty," he said, "we'll take your car. I will be downstairs in a few minutes." He crossed the room to gather his little boy in his arms. Aidan just broke down and wept. "It's all right, buddy," Aaron said softly, "I am here, Uncle Rusty is here, so is Aunt Sarah Jo. We're not going to let anyone hurt you anymore." "Mommy hates me," Aidan whimpered, "she never loved me!" "I think Mommy hates everyone, little guy," Aaron said, caressing his son, "she doesn't know what she wants or what she will get. She has to pay for what she did to you." Meanwhile, Sarah Jo dialed the number of Elixir Restaurant in Los Angeles. "Hello, Elixir, this is Libby Smas," the voice said. "Ms. Smas, my name is Sarah Jo McArthur, I am the manager at the Futura Resort in Orlando, Florida," Sarah Jo said, "is David or Cathy Rizzo available?" "I think Cathy is," Libby said, "let me go see, hang on a second." In Los Angeles, Libby went to the office and saw Cathy looking at some papers. "Cathy," Libby said, "a call for you from a Sarah Jo McArthur." "Put her on," Cathy said, "she's the manager of the place Aaron is staying at." She then picked up the extension, "Catherine Rizzo," she said. "Mrs. Rizzo," Sarah Jo said, "My name is Sarah Jo McArthur. I am the manager of the Futura Resort in Orlando, Florida. Your son, Aaron told me to call you." "Is he all right?" Cathy asked. Dave came in, looking concerned. "Yes," Sarah Jo said, "Rusty Brown is here too. Aaron and Jennifer are divorced." "Oh my heavens," Cathy said, "it was inevitable, given their troubles." "Why is Rusty down there?" Dave asked, "I was wondering what is going on?" "He's helping out, he's here at Aaron's request," Sarah Jo said, "the reason I called is because Aaron is going to go for sole custody of Aidan." "What happened?" Cathy asked, "I am really worried. Is Aidan all right?" "He is physically," Sarah Jo replied sighing, "emotionally though, that is something else again. Considering what Jennifer said to him." "What did she say to him?" Cathy asked. Sarah Jo repeated the full story of what Jennifer said about her child. Cathy was furious. "I will deal with her," Cathy said, "you can be sure of that!" "I am sure you will," Sarah Jo replied, "But that is something we can all deal with. I want to ask you, did you ever have any suspicions about Jennifer and her behavior?" "I never thought I did," Cathy said, "until now, but Aaron's father had always had some suspicions about her." "Isn't Dave Aaron's father?" Sarah Jo asked. "Stepfather," Cathy said, "Alan Atherton was Aaron's biological father. He died a few years ago. I married Dave two years after Alan died." "OK, thanks for straightening that out for me," Sarah Jo said, "did Jennifer ever strike you as somewhat reckless?" "Not at work, Ms. McArthur, at least not that I've seen," Dave said as he came on the line, "but at home, that was something else again." Libby looked ill, she knew something about Jennifer. Something she had once done at work. "Cathy," Libby said, "I need to talk to you about Jennifer." "What is it, Libby?" Dave asked, "You can tell me." Libby looked at her boss, "I think you should know," she said, "Jennifer was reckless with some paperwork some months ago. Some financial things." Dave and Libby looked it over, while Cathy talked with Sarah Jo. "Thank you, Sarah Jo, for the information. I never thought Jennifer could be so vicious and cruel." Cathy said, "I will try to get there in a few days. Tell Aidan I love him." Back in Orlando, at the Orange County Courthouse, the custody trial began. "I think I am better suited to take care of Aidan," Aaron said, "I also have the support and help of my parents David and Catherine Rizzo. They have always had sufficient means to help me." "That is a lie," Jennifer said, infuriated, "he's just trying to take my son away from me!" "Not from the report that Mr. Atherton and Mr. Brown have given to me, not to mention the brief that Ms. Sarah Jo McArthur, the manager at the Futura has given me," the judge said, "and I will not tolerate another interruption, Ms. Barrett. "You roped him into marriage," the judge continued, "and then the word came out that not only did you marry him for money; but you wanted your son aborted, and that you would have killed him had you had the chance, and that you never loved him. The same son you claim to care about!" Jennifer looked sickened. It was obvious that Aaron, Rusty and Sarah Jo had done their homework and done it well. She then knew what would end up happening. "As such, and given that he can provide a decent home for Aidan," the judge said, "I will be giving full sole custody of Aidan Michael Atherton, the minor child, to his biological father, Aaron Atherton, and his support caregivers, Russell Brown and Sarah Jo McArthur. Jennifer Barrett, you are losing custody, because you have pulled some rather devious tricks to try to deceive this court. You will be found in contempt for perjury. Consider yourself lucky that I also don't have you charged with custodial interference. I am ordering you into intense anger management counseling, Ms. Barrett." "And if I don't do that?" Jennifer sniffed snobbishly. "Then what are you going to do to me, Old Man?!" "Then you will be in jail," the judge said coldly, "from your behavior today, madam, I can see why Aidan is safer away from you. Your ex-husband is right, you really are a reckless woman! Not only reckless, but very selfish. I've been on the bench for many years, and I've never ever seen a more cold-hearted and cold blooded woman than you are, Ms. Barrett. And if you know what is good for you, you will enjoy your counseling. We're adjourned. The judge pounded his gavel, the case was finished. Jennifer glared at her ex and Rusty who were celebrating. Rusty gave his rival a smile of triumph, Once more, Jennifer, he thought, you thought you could control things, and you found out otherwise, you scheming control freak! You've lost! Justice has been served! Hours later, Jennifer went back to her room, and slammed the door. She threw herself on the bed. "DAMN YOU!" she raged, throwing a pillow across the room, "YOU WON'T STOP ME!" Meanwhile, in the room of Rusty and Aaron. A quiet celebration was in full force. "I've got a sensational idea," Sarah Jo beamed, "let's take the little guy here to the parks. As soon as he wakes up." "Is he asleep," Aaron asked. "Yes, he is," Sarah Jo said, "I convinced him to get some rest. He went right to bed and snuggled with his blanket and his bear. I called your mother, Aaron, and she and Dave are on their way in a couple of days." Rusty thought about that. He remembered something that he had told in court. "Aaron," he said, "do you remember when I told you once about the finances at the restaurant before I bought the shares from you?" "I think so," Aaron said, "what does this have to do with everything?" "Jennifer did something that I don't think anyone knew that she did," Rusty admitted, "I brought it up in court, but it just sunk in." "What are you talking about?" Sarah Jo asked. "I own part shares of Elixir, Aaron's parents own the other shares," Rusty explained, "and one month, our books were off base. When you talked to Cathy, did she say anything about it?" As Sarah Jo was about to answer, the phone rang. Aaron went to answer it, "Mom?" he asked. "Honey," Cathy said, "I am sorry about what happened. Is Aidan all right?" "Yes," Aaron said, "he's asleep. A lot of things came out that have rocked me to the core." "What happened, sweetheart?" Cathy asked. "For one thing, Jennifer never loved me," Aaron said, "she only married me because I was wealthy. Also she never loved Aidan, and wanted him aborted." "Sarah Jo told me the whole story, too. I should have known," Cathy said in a low voice, "your father was right about her all along." "Why did you call?" Aaron said. "Dave found out about something else about Jennifer," she said. "when you owned your shares, did she do the books?" "She did, most of the time," Aaron said, "when you or Dave didn't do them." "She and someone else she was working with sunk the restaurant," Cathy said, "there is a chance we may go out of business." "DAMN HER!" Aaron said, "What does that mean for us?" "Our fortune is safe, honey," Cathy soothed, "it's the profits from Elixir she skimmed. She did some real damage. Jason and Nate took a hit too. She must have done something to skim the money from Ether too." "I bet Jason and Nate are furious," Aaron said. "Not with you or Aidan. They understand, and you tell Aidan that their uncles say hello and they love him," Cathy said, "but Jennifer would be wise to stay away from us." "What does that mean to Rusty's shares?" Aaron said. "We sold the place before it got too bad," Cathy said, "we're letting you know what happened and who is coming." Aaron looked at Rusty, "What happened, Aaron?" he asked, his arm on his hand. Sarah Jo came up to join them. "Jennifer did it again," Aaron said, "her recklessness has cost all of us Elixir. Mom and Dave are talking of selling the place." "I agree with your parents plans," Rusty said, "I have means of my own to help with. And your parents are fine. I will talk with them in a couple of days, and make arrangements." Aaron's eyes blazed, All right, Jennifer, he thought, you want war? By god, lady, you'll get war! In SPADES! (camera fades to black) |
