As with every rule set I always advise play an army you'll enjoy playing, not the best or best looking but one you find an affinity with. Look on the GW site at the different figures available, when you see ones you like look at the codex if you can and see how they play. |

What kind of play style are you wanting? 1. shooty, assaulty or hybrid 2. A relatively small but elite force or a horde 3. imperial or xeno That should help narrow your search for the army that would suit you best. |

What are the options for hybrid(shooty+assault) + elites? If I went for 40K I would want something with low model count (can't face painting more hordes after Beastment just yet) but reasonable variety. Thinking of CSM or Necrons. |

Low figure count, elite shooty/assault. Grey Knights spring to mind not much variety though. If you want variety I'd say Sisters of Battle, some nice figures, pretty much comparable to Imperial Guard in power armour with some nice twists.

William, I think tyranids would definitely suit your play style. they are very much in your face. and you aren't shy to getting your stuff painted which is great because you will have alot to paint and they look fantastic when done! The only drawback to tyranids ie that you have to have alot of extra models you may or may not use for example extra termagants for spawning. also you have to be quite good at modelling and converting as the stuff in the book isn't fully covered by the model range! although a few more recent releases ensures you have a good range of stuff available. tyranids are not ultra competative but I think they definitely got a boost with 6th edition! |

As far as low model/elite armies go i think Colin has got it right there, the army that best fits that bill is Grey Knights. But you have got to think that compared to fantasy every army (tyranids and orks excluded) is a pretty elite army. I htink Grey Knights are great, but to be honest as Colin said they are limited in variety. But Grey Knights are VERY competative with their army ranked 2nd and 3rd in the UK rankings table. The player ranked first is Necrons! Now i can really vouch for necrons, a pal of mine who i play occasionally is a Necron player and comparatively very new to the game as in he doesnt play alot and so the rules and tactics arent always at the forefront of how he plays. And even so Necrons are a touch army to play against. EVen if you went for a more "horde" list of warriors they are so fast and easy to paint that you wont have a problem at all. And not to mention being a recent book from Matt Ward they are a very good army to play, also given they have such a variety of models now, as well as very strong heavy support anf flyers. |

Any thoughts on Chaos SM? I have the Dark Vengeance Limited Edition set stashed away and was thinking about either keeping the rulebook and selling off the models or using the CSM to start a 40K force. |

CSM are OK but the starter force is pretty poor, the Chaos Cultists are worse than my Imperial Guardsmen. The Space Marines in there on the other hand are beautifully crafted and a good starter force (Almost too good not to use in my opinion), the good thing about SM is you can create your own fluff and colour scheme opening up some nice conversion options. |
