From NoNAIS.org: For the birds: Contaminated feed now found on chicken farms in Indiana SDA and FDA investigators said Monday that byproducts from pet food contaminated by wheat gluten imported from China were used in chicken feed on farms in Indiana. The discovery came as part of the government’s probe into imported rice protein concentrate and wheat gluten, which have been found to contain melamine and melamine-related products. Pet food contaminated with melamine has killed or sickened pets, and more recently caused hog-farm quarantines, across the country…In early February, some 30 broiler farms and eight breeder farms in Indiana received and fed contaminated feed to chickens, officials said. All broilers have since been processed, while the breeders are under voluntary hold by owners. The agencies said they believed the likelihood that people would fall ill after eating the product is low due to dilution of the contamination, and no recall was necessary. However, USDA cannot approve products derived from these poultry for human consumption. As was the case with hogs, USDA is offering to compensate producers who euthanize the affected poultry. [This is interesting to read given that the USDA’s John Wiemer’s told the Vermont Legislators that there would be no money to compensate small farmers - I guess the big producers deserve more since they have deeper pockets. -WJ] Forward from Rich - |
