Food headlines David Holland, MD These were some headlines I came across this week. The first is: http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/news/ng.a...els-food-safety This talks about the FDA's inability to adequately oversee the safety of our food supply. Given that mycotoxins are already inadequately screened for in our grain foods, it is our duty to minimize our exposure to such under-regulated foods and increase our chances of health. Foods that are naturally low in mycotoxins--grass-fed beef, most fruits and vegetables, yogurt, etc.--do not require intensive screening for mycotoxins, so it's a safer bet to focus on these foods--the same foods listed in the Limited Carb diet. The second headline was: http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/news/ng.a...t-food-children The other comment I hear often is "I never get sick--I'm healthy as a horse!" (in the same breath, the person explains how their blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes are all well under control with the medications they're taking. Never get sick?). The problem with this misconception is amplified by health care providers that tell their patients to "eat whatever they want--food has nothing to do with your illness". Thus, the patient goes home convinced that he or she is on the right track with their eating. Once again, if you've never followed the Limited Carb diet for at least two weeks and noticed a positive change in the way you feel, you, too, will be convinced that you're eating rather well. Once you do follow the eating program and begin to notice positive changes--your joints don't hurt, your digestion is much better, your energy is improved, and so on--you'll learn for the first time what your health care provider could have never taught you: that you diet is intimately linked with your health. |
