POTASSIUM BICARBONATE-ANTIDOTE TO DISEASE?? C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D. I recently was sent a commentary on a book by an Italian physician who Claims to treat all types of cancer by giving intra-arterial sodium bicarbonate. Bicarbonate, of course produces an alkaline environment and there is great evidence that our diet is much too acidic. On the other hand, I am not too keen on the idea of that much sodium, so I did a PubMed search of potassium bicarbonate. The most interesting paper suggested that the net pre-agricultural diet included over 3 times as many bicarbonate producing foods than the current American diet. (Am. J. Clin Nutr, 2003, 76: 1308-1316) Another study demonstrated a significantly greater diuresis after potassium bicarbonate ingestion than after sodium bicarbonate ingestion, leaving the individuals with a net increase in body water. (Ann Appl Physiol, = 2000, 88: 540-550) Yet another fascinating article demonstrates that the current western diet leaves us with a relative excess of sodium and deficiency of potassium, because of the low precursors of bicarbonate. The authors even suggest that supplemental potassium bicarbonate might serve as an antidote to our low intake of fruits and vegetables. (Semin Nephrol, 1999, 19:487-493). Actually Americans average less than half the recommended daily intake of 4700 mg of potassium. Indeed to get 4700 mg of potassium, you would need to eat (of the foods with highest content of potassium): * One sweet potato---694 mg * One cup of tomato paste---664 mg * One cup lima beans---484 mg (but they are acidifying) * One cup winter squash---448 mg( but it is acidifying) * One banana---422 mg * One cup cooked spinach---419 mg * One medium cantaloupe---368 mg * 1/2 cup lentils---365 mg (but acidifying) * 1/2 cup kidney beans---358 mg(but acidifying) * One small apple---140 mg I included the small apple to round it off! Remember that most foods, including great fruits and vegetables, have smaller concentrations of potassium! And note, that I had to include 9 servings of the highest potassium foods to get to the recommended daily intake! Potassium, magnesium and calcium, the critical minerals for maintaining cell and blood health, are deficient in our diets! Dietary potassium deficiency is a major contributor to hypertension as well as many diseases. Interestingly, potassium bicarbonate significantly reduces calcium excretion even in high protein diets. And there is evidence that K-Barb helps prevent osteoporosis through its calcium saving effect. High protein diets, common in our society, are well known for their negative effect upon calcium. And interestingly potassium bicarbonate also reduces nitrogen secretion as well as magnesium excretion. The combined benefits of potassium bicarbonate of enhancing calcium, magnesium and protein retention, while enhancing water excretion, are metabolically beneficial. Indeed, there is considerable evidence to suggest that potassium bicarbonate supplementation may well help prevent osteoporosis, reduce blood pressure, reduce weight and even improve adult onset diabetes. (Eur J Nutr, 2001, 40: 200-213). Theoretically, an increase in alkalinity might also reduce the risk of cancer. Within one week of taking 793 mg of potassium as K-Bicarb, I lost 3 pounds of weight, presumably water. The average American consumes only 3.4 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. A minimum of 5 are recommended. I consume 6 to 8 servings. On the other hand, because I take 5 grams of vitamin C daily, my urine acidity has been quite low (pH 5), whereas after adding the K-Bicarb, my urine acidity has reached the more desirable level of pH 6.5. If you have normal kidney function and drink adequate amounts of non-chlorinated water (half pounds of body weight in ounces of water), and are unable to consume 8 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, I suggest you explore the health benefits of added K-Bicarb! Start with 600 mg of potassium and evaluate according to your urine pH. Alkalizing foods (diet should be 75% alkaline producing): Virtually all veggie vegetables Almost all fruits Almonds Millet Tempeh Tofu Whey Most seasonings, especially cinnamon, curry, ginger and herbs Soured dairy products Chia seeds Acidifying foods (only 25% of foods eaten): Corn Lentils Olives Winter squash Blueberries Cranberries Currants Plums Prunes All grains, flours and pastas, other than millet and chia All beans and peas, including soy Soy milk Cheese Eggs Carbonated water Ice cream and ice milk Cashews Peanuts Pecans Walnuts Oils and fats, except olive oil Canned fruits All meats, including fish and fowl Beer, liquor and wine Pop (soft drinks) Coffee Sugar Alcohol Mustard Pepper Carob Vinegar Aspirin and virtually all drugs, OTC as well as Rx Herbicides Pesticides Tobacco STRESS J Am Diet Assoc 1995;95:791-797 |

I would think that the potassium would be the best one as we already get too much sodium. Chemistry was my weakest ..... I bluffed my way through that one.

Hey SG, you've studied this... tell me why olives are acidic and olive oil isn't... or why soured dairy is alkaline and cheeses aren't. Aren't Cheeses soured milk??? I'm very confused by al this and I know I need to read a LOT about it... I have several other things to accomplish first.

I am sure Lisa knows much more about this than I do. But I do know that just because something is acidic to our taste buds, doesn't mean it's acidic to the body. For example, vinegar or lemon juice are acidic to taste, but alkaline to the body. Weird huh. Here's another good article from Dr. Young's site that might help ... or confuse us more! ha A Common Misconception It is often said that 'acidic' fruits like lemons, limes and grapefruits will acidify the blood and tissues. In fact, the citric, lactic, and other acids in such low sugar fruits - unlike high sugar fruits - exist primarily in their anionic (basic or electron) form, especially as their Na+ and K+ salts (e.g., potassium citrate). Following absorption, these anions (bases or electrons) are metabolized to sodium bicarbonate. Thus, lemons, limes and grapefruits alkalinize - not acidify - blood and tissues. Alkalinization occurs - even though the pH is typically low - because free cations (protons or acids) are more than directly offset by the generated sodium bicarbonate from the low sugar fruit. For example, a liter of lime juice with a pH of 4, has 10 to the minus 4 moles of free cations (protons or acids). The quantity of organic anions (bases or electrons) in the lime juice far exceeds this number of free cations (protons or acids) and therefore, a net alkalinization will occur. This net alkalinization does not occur with high sugar fruit drinks like grape juice or grape juice concentrate, pear juice or pear juice concentrate, apple juice or apple juice concentrate - all found as ingredients in the Himalayan Goji Juice. The Himalayan Goji Juice has a pH of 3.65, an ORP of +181 mV, a rH2 of 25.81. Furthermore, with the additional 132 grams of sugar per liter or 4 grams per 30 ml (1 liter of Goji Juice contains over 1/4 pound of sugar) , the cations (protons or acids) from sugar metabolism will drive the pH as low as 1.50, the ORP in excess of +500 mV, and the rH2 over 30, making this beverage highly acidic and toxic to the body. Summary: The quantity of organic cations (protons or acids) from high sugar fruits and fruit drinks like Himalayan Goji Juice significantly exceeds the number of free anions (bases or electrons). Therefore, a net acidification occurs in the blood and tissues. When testing the saliva or urine after drinking a high sugar fruit drink like the Himalayan Goji Juice, your result will be a false positive. The acidic fruit juice beverage with its high sugar content (Goji juice has 4 grams of sugar per ounce or 20% sugar by volume) will cause the pH of the saliva or urine to immediately increase by 1 or 2 points, or 10 to 100 times on the pH scale. This activates the body's buffering system and causes a release of sodium bicarbonate from the salivary glands to nuetralize the cations (protons or acids) from the highly acidic fruit or fruit juice. This release of sodium bicarbonate from the salivary glands causes a reduction in the overall alkaline reserves of the body, and further acidifies the blood and tissues. A prime example of this is found when the bones of our body are used to buffer the acids from eating or drinking acidic fruits. About two thirds of bone mass consists of inorganic minerals, especially hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), but also brushite (CaHPO4) and the sodium, potassium and calcium salts of carbonate (CO3). When you mentally dissect these formulas it becomes clear that bone contains a huge potentail source of cation (proton or acid) acceptors, including PO4-, HPO6-, OH-. and CO3-. Thus, bone dissolution can help mitigate a fall in pH from eating or drinking high sugar fruits and fruit drinks. During metabolic acidosis from the sugars in the fruit and fruit drinks, carbonate on the bone surface acts as a proton acceptor. An important mechanism appears to be the chemical exchange of free protons from the acidic fruit sugar bound to the carbonate. The buffering reaction is: 2H+ + CO3- <=> CO2 + H2O During states of metabolic acidosis buffering takes place through a combination of (1) direct chemical exchange with bone cations (protons or acids), just as during as the buffering of metabolic acids from the acidic fruit sugars, and (2) increased activity of osteoclast cells, which help mobilize additional bone mineral. Both acute and chronic bone buffering lead to the urinary excretion of bone calcium, which will reduce bone mass (osteopenia), cause calcium stone formation in the kidneys, and cause a sudden rise in the pH of the urine. All of this high sugar fruit eating and drinking may not only cause bone loss and calcium stone formation, but also eventually lead to renal damage and then renal failure. Conclusion: Eat and drink all the low sugar fruits and fruit drinks like avocados, peppers, lemons, limes and grapefruits because they will alkalize the blood and tissues. They add to the alkaline reserves, not reduce the alkaline reserves of body and therefore a net alkalinization occurs. Do not eat or drink high sugar fruits or fruit drinks from apples, oranges, mangoes, pineapples, bananas, peaches, pears, watermelons, just to name a few. Even the popular exotic fruit juice drinks like Mangosteen, Noni, Xango, Thai-Go, G3, and Goji will acidify the blood and tissues and deplete the alkaline reserves of the body which may result in bone loss, calcium stones in the brain, breast, liver and kidneys, and/or renal failure. In order to achieve outstanding health, energy and vitality one must maintain the alkaline design of their body with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. Oh boy, you lost me on that one! I need to see a visual of the chemistry I think to see what is binding with what. I always felt that the natural acids in the foods knocked out the mycotoxins or bound with them and therefore less damage to the tissues. Also, killed off the fungus and therefore less acid in the body.....

Every website and book I've read about pH balancing and their list of foods in alkaline or acid lists are different! MOST of the foods listed are the same and they all agree on most foods, but there are variations on it. Avocados are alkaline and avocado oil is acidic. Weird. That being said, I will snoop around more, since I am avid about this topic, and see if I can find info on your questions. Look at these lists! http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm It doesn't appear to be an exact science. Found this: Rancid Foods: Most commercial oils (corn, vegetable, peanut, canola, mustard seed, palm kernel and cotton seed) as well as peanut butter is rancid. All products made with oils - doughnuts, baked products, ice cream, potato chips and deep fried foods fall into this category. Modern processing turns oils into deadly fats through the processing methods used to chemically change them. They’ve been bleached; contain pesticide residues and chemical additives. Many times they’ve also been deodorized because of their putrid stench after refinement. Try to use only extra virgin olive oils which by-pass this refinement method. That would be my guess! But the goal is SLIGHTLY ALKALINE overall so 25%-30% acidic foods would be the goal and the rest alkaline. Since plant, seed and nut oils like coconut, flax, olive, etc., all have wonderful GOOD health benefits, I'd say it's worth the intake! |
