Cold & Flu Season is Here

Do you wonder what you can do to keep from getting sick this winter or to get rid of that bug sooner? Here are some practical tips:

1.Get rid of sugar in your diet. This includes Corn Syrup, High-fructose Corn Syrup, Maltodextrin, fructose, dextrose and other -ose words. Sugars feed the infection and keep it stronger.

2.Eat foods which build up the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a good start. Eating fresh foods as raw as possible will give you the most nutrients, enzymes and antioxidants.

3.Vitamin C, Berries, antioxidants (found in dark colored fruits and veggies) and others can help shorten a cold or flu. A certified herbalist can suggest other natural viral fighters.

4.Stay away from foods which lower the immune system. Corn and all corn products, chocolate, alcohols, soft drinks and processed foods.

5.Wash hands often especially when you have been around others or out in the general public. Germs can stay alive on hard surfaces for several hours.

6.And the most important, if you are sick stay home. This helps prevent spreading the bug.

Following these suggestions can help your body fight for you this fall and winter.

How to Get Truly Good Health

Good health basics are usually the same everywhere you read about them. These are the things you really need to do to maintain good health or begin to recover some health you may have lost. Sometimes you can lose good health and not be aware of it. The changes occur so slowly you don’t notice. When you begin to get that good health back, you can see the differences quickly. Our motto is: Give your body something good to work with and your body will work with you.

We will begin a short series of articles expanding on these basic principles.

* Good diet - Not just 3 Square Meals a Day
* Exercise/Activity - Make an effort or do a little more each day
* Sunshine/Fresh Air - 15 minutes minimum
* Supplements - a good multi vitamin/mineral is a must today
* Pure Water - filtered is better than tap
* Get plenty of sleep - lack of sleep prevents healing
* Positive Mental Attitude & Forgiveness are important. Bitterness hinders healing.

Things to do to get started
* Don’t stop taking or doing what your doctor said to take or do but look for an exit strategy.
* Never over-do a diet or exercise program. Take things slowly.
* Make health changes with a friend or spouse. You can keep each other on track and you never feel alone.

Come by Crucial Health (located inside Crucial Tackle) to read more about it. Health information researched for you. We offer a great selection of supplements and selected food items to help you stay healthy.

To Your Health #3

Last week I mentioned I would start a short series of articles to expand on the "How To Get Truly Good Health" list. This week we explore "diet," the big "D " word.

What is a "Good" Diet? We are talking about what you eat on a daily basis not a regimented program. Many advertisements have been pushing soy, artificial sweeteners made from "real" foods, even milk for calcium and Vitamin D. The research I have found shows all of these to be only partially true. This research is from The World Health Organization and various doctors who do clinical research and is very interesting.

Getting on the true health path takes a bit of doing. Take it slowly and do a few new things each week. Build on your health successes. Learning to shop for different type of foods takes some getting used to. But never fear, once you begin to be healthier you can have your old favorites occasionally.

Where to Start? Adults need 9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily (children need 5), not an easy task. Dark colored veggies, fruits and berries are much healthier than lighter colored ones. Organic produce is better than non-organic, but if you can't get organic or can't afford it, any produce is better than none. Look for bright colors and few blemishes. When you get the produce home, rinse it off and dry it well. Store in the refrigerator if possible. Don’t use produce which has mold or black holes. Vegetable drinks are a great place to get started adding more vegetables to your diet. There are even new ones with fruit added.

Grass-fed meats are best as they are high in Omega 3s the same as fish. Unfortunately, they can be expensive. We have started adding at least one meal per week with Grass-fed meats and taking Fish Oil.

Check your pantry and begin to replace items which contain Monosodium Glutamate (MSG). MSG is highly dangerous to the health of your brain. MSG can be listed under a variety of names including: Glutamate, Glutamic acid, Monosodium glutamate, Textured protein, Hydrolyzed protein, Monopotassium glutamate, Calcium caseinate, Sodium caseinate, Gelatin, Yeast extract, and Yeast food Autolyzed yeast. (Stop by the store for a FREE list of all the MSG names to take with you.)

Replacing your pantry with healthier products will help you feel better which will help you want to continue to do better things for your health. Part 2 next week.

(They published a picture with this article! :D A lady looking at produce in the local market.)

To Your Health

Week before last I mentioned I would start a short series of articles to expand on the "How To Get Truly Good Health" list. This week we continue to explore "diet," the big "D " word part 2.

Last week we discussed adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet, how organic is better than non-organic and how removing MSG is important for your brain health.

This week we discuss corn and corn products and why they are not a good addition to your diet. Most everyone likes corn. It tastes wonderful but it is probably not the best grain to eat because of the changes in corn the past 50 years or so.

Let’s take a quick look at what corn is and where it came from. It is not an original food product. It was hybridized by American Indians hundreds of years ago, but in the past century became a Genetically Modified (GMO) food. One of the problems with GMOs is the fact that once you mess with the DNA structure of an organism it is no longer healthy and makes it susceptible to disease. Fungus has been introduced to grains during storage in silos or other hot, humid places. The fungus DNA merges with the seed/corn DNA and the next generation has a harder time of surviving in the field. This has happened over and over during the past 50+ years and now, according to the 911 Commission, all corn is “universally contaminated with fungus.” The code is locked in the DNA structure.

Corn and other grains are regularly tested for fungus poisons in the US but only for two toxins, Aflatoxin and Fumonisin. Europe tests for at least five major toxins. Grains which have too much go to animal feeds. Those with less are allowed in human foods. People raising animals need to be aware of toxin symptoms.

Toxins are difficult for our bodies to get rid of so they build up and are stored in our fat cells. The effects of these toxins are cumulative or add up over time. These toxins are linked to many diseases and to obesity.

From 1990-1991 a birth defect outbreak along the Texas-Mexico border was linked to infected corn. Many children died or are living with deformed bodies because of corn. (Come by Crucial Health for a copy of the article from CNN.)

The easiest way to overcome these toxins is limit how much you eat of them. If you lose weight, you will get rid of the stored toxins. But changing what you eat and losing weight is only part of the battle. Other measures need to be taken to regain lost health. Crucial Health has articles on many subjects and they are available to you for free.

Exercise
Previously we have discussed adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet, how organic is better than non-organic and how removing MSG is important for your brain health. Last time we discussed corn and corn products and why they are not a good addition to your diet.

This week we move on to Exercise. Exercise can be a hard to begin. We suggest taking things slowly, not "No Pain No Gain." Pain is not always a good thing. Adding exercise can be as simple as taking the stairs when you can, parking farther from the door and walking a bit further or actually taking on a work-out program. Adding a little at a time helps your body adjust. If you are overweight or have major health issues jumping in to an exerting exercise program can be dangerous. Please consult your doctor before beginning any thing new. You know your body and what you can deal with but sometimes we need guidance. As we mentioned with diet, start small and add to your successes as you get used to the changes.

One of the reasons we exercise is to help move the blood from our legs and feet via veins back to the heart. Also, since the lymphatic system does not have a pump it has no way to circulate the fluid and therefore it is all done by muscular contraction through exercise. Your health simply will not change for the better without exercise.

The changes in diet can help you with exercise as well. With better nutrition you should have more energy and less pain which will help you feel like walking a little further or pushing a bit harder.

The New Year is sneaking up and now is a great time to decide to begin making changes toward better health. Taking things one step at a time is the easiest way to get healthy but you have to make the choice.

To Your Health

This week we explore Sunshine and Fresh Air and their impact on your health.

Over the past 20 years there have been many warnings against sunshine on skin for fear of cancer. This fear has caused many people to have health issues in relation to loss of Vitamin D and the lack of sunlight actually increases the risk of cancer.

Most bodies can produce enough Vitamin D for good health during the sunnier months. Supplementation is not necessary in our area of the world if you follow this one rule: Get at least 15 minutes of sunshine on as much bare skin as possible each day. On cold days sit in front of a large window where the sun is shining in. Read a book, the paper or do a hobby to pass the time. Sunblock is not necessary and should be avoided at this time. The sunshine allows the body to produce enough Vitamin D for your health.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is almost at epidemic proportions during Winter months. This includes feeling sad, grumpy, moody or anxious, even depressed. Many lose interest in their usual activities. Some people crave carbohydrates and sweets. Some sleep more. Weight gain is common when eating more carbs and getting less exercise.

Getting lots of sunshine at the same times every day should elevate many of your symptoms. Taking a walk each day, walking on a treadmill, riding an exercise bike, parking farther from the door when shopping even walking inside your home helps with many symptoms too. Take a minimum of 5 minutes per day to add full body activity for better health.

It is very well known that indoor pollution, outdoor smog and other air contaminates can really hurt your health. Smoking is one of the worst things for your health as everyone knows. Breathing deeply for several minutes several times a day adds oxygen to the blood helping in many aspects of overall health and working the muscles assisting in breathing.

There is a large muscle below the ribcage called the diaphragm (dia-fram). This muscle is necessary for breathing as well as other activities which require more air such as singing, playing a wind instrument and athletics. Oxygen taken in during breathing travels through the blood to all areas of the body. The cells use the oxygen and in turn send toxic carbon dioxide back to the lungs where we breathe it out. Not removing the carbon dioxide and other toxins from the cells causes damage to the cells allowing illness and disease to set in. Deep breathing also promotes relaxation which is necessary in this stressed-out world.

In short, sunshine is good for you and deep breathing is important. Take the time to help your health.

This week we discuss supplements and pure water.

Supplements are generally necessary for anyone who isn’t perfect. Our world has changed so much. Many synthetics are in our environment which really doesn’t help us with staying healthy.

The most important issue when dealing with supplements is the brand. Not all brands are equal. Researching the brands you choose is very important. At Crucial Health we research all our supplements and do not carry fad items or brands which test to be inferior. Taking a supplement which is not usable by the body is also an issue. You may buy calcium and if it is not a usable form you would need to take 2-3 times as much to see results.

Another issue is actually inside your body. If your gut is not healthy you will not be able to absorb the nutrients you do take in. There are several supplements which help the gut to heal and be able to absorb what you take.

Pure water is also important to overall health. Each year we receive a water report from the water department. The report tells us what is wrong with our water supply. One year there was a warning for a hazardous chemical in the water. Filtering your tap water is the best way to get purer water. A test you can do to see all that is in your water is adding tap water to a good pan, placing on the stove and letting the pan boil dry. You will see a white powder in the pan. This is the mineral and chemical residue of your water. Some of these residues are good for us, but most are not.

I have read in several places to drink distilled water. This may be good for certain health issues for a short time but long term drinking of distilled water can cause problems. Water is supposed to have minerals in it. Taking in water with no mineral content causes the body to pull those minerals from the bones to make the water usable. Filtered water with a pinch of sea salt or other mineral salt is a great way to add back the good things we need, making a healthier water and a healthier body. Crucial Health carries several types of full mineral salt.

Our next to last article in this series, Get plenty of sleep. The body uses sleep as a time to heal and recharge systems. When sleep is interrupted or shortened our bodies reap the consequences.

Children need 10-12 hours of sleep each night because their bodies are growing so quickly. Tissues need sleep to heal and sleep is the time cells multiply the fastest because energy is not needed for other functions.

I used to substitute teach in public schools and was always distressed to see all the sleepy children who could not concentrate. Many actually slept during classes missing so much they needed to learn. Children up to age 18 or 20 need much more sleep to keep their bodies working properly. Limit computer and video games to after school, not evening times.

Adults need 7-9 hours depending upon that person’s stress levels. The more stress, the more sleep is necessary. Getting that much sleep is nearly impossible for some people. High stress, caffeine intake, too much activity near bedtime, exercise too late in the evening, and many other things such as how much light is in your bedroom all play a part.

Other influences on sleep can include a lack of nutrients. Some minerals calm and relax nerves and allow us to sleep deeper and longer. I used to be a very light sleeper and had problems focusing during the day. Now I sleep about 7 hours straight and wake refreshed. Diet, nutrients, relaxation and exercise have all helped in this area.

Another issue which can cause problems in brain function is electromagnetic fields. Keep your LCD clock at least 4 feet away from your head while you sleep. Old wiring, unprotected wiring or damaged wiring can all emit electromagnetic fields which can disturb brain function and sleep.

Stop by Crucial Health located inside Crucial Tackle to learn more about sleep, brain function and other health issues. Information is always researched and free. Contact us with a topic you would like to see addressed in this column.

To Your Health #9

This was supposed to be our last in this series of How To Get Truly Good Health. However, I remembered one more important concept which we will discuss next week. This week we discuss mental attitude.

Mental attitude plays a huge role in how our bodies function. If we have a positive mental attitude, not only is it proven to help us heal and recover faster, but having a positive attitude keeps our spirits up and people around us feel better as well. If you have ever been around someone who is sick and also in a perpetually bad mood you generally do not want to be around him or her very long. Many times you decide not to visit him or her again. Having support of those around us also helps us heal. Many studies have been done proving that prayer improves how fast people heal. Having a group of friends who pray with us creates a powerful connection and allows the healing from our Creator to intervene.

Getting a positive attitude takes some doing on your part. Dale Carnegie said, "Act enthusiastic and you'll be enthusiastic." I have found in my own life that making the effort to be positive takes some doing especially if I don't feel like being positive at the time. But the times I have actively tried to be positive I have found the attitude mirrored in the people I come in contact with. In other words, when I'm happy others are happy. If I am in a bad mood others seem to be in a bad mood as well. Our emotions can feed off other's emotions even without us realizing it.

In the same lines as attitude is forgiveness. Letting feelings of unforgiveness and bitterness go is extremely important in the healing process. The Bible speaks of this concept over and over. Bitterness and unforgiveness can literally eat away at our insides allowing all types of disease to take root.

To Your Health #10

The final article in this series of "How to Get Truly Good Health" focuses on two topics I neglected to have on the original list. These two items are very important in obtaining and maintaining good health. Both involve a similar process. The first is deep breathing, the second elimination.

Deep breathing cleanses the lungs, brings oxygen to the blood and increases metabolism. The cells in our body must have oxygen to live. Cells take oxygen and nutrients from the blood as it circulates through the body, then uses those for energy to accomplish their required tasks. As they work they produce wastes such as carbon dioxide. These waste products must be removed from the body. The blood brings many of the wastes back to the lungs where we breathe them out. Not clearing those wastes out can cause many issues in the body.

The best way to practice deep breathing and teach yourself the proper method is to lie on your back. If your bed is firm you can practice there. Breathe from your gut. Do not move your shoulders but allow the muscle below the ribs to work. This muscle is the diaphragm. Fill your lungs as much as is comfortable and hold for a second or two. Release this air all the way to as empty as you can manage. Then repeat up to 10 times. After completing this relax for a while as it can cause you to become dizzy. The more often you practice try to increase the number of times you inhale and exhale deeply.

As you go through your day focus on how you are breathing and work at breathing deeply to gain relaxation, eliminate cellular waste and boost your oxygen.

The last item to discuss is elimination of wastes from the body. I'll not get graphic, just let me say it is very important to eliminate the digestive tract several times a day. "Normal" is after each meal. Adding fiber and drinking plenty of pure water are the most well known helpers in elimination but there is one other important nutrient involved. Magnesium. With adequate amounts of magnesium in the body the system works like clock-work. Note that drinking caffeine filled drinks is actually dehydrating to the body and should be avoided.

This week I will begin answering questions which have been asked of me.
We will begin with basic questions. If you have a question which I may be able to answer for you, just give me a call or e-mail me. crucialhealth@cableone.net

Q. What is fungus?

A. A fungus is one type of microscopic organism which can cause illness and disease in animals and humans. There are around 5,000 different fungi that we are aware of. The family of Fungi includes: mushrooms, yeasts, molds, mildews, rusts and slime molds. All fungi were created to break down dead organic matter and they all produce mycotoxins (myco = fungal; toxin = poison). Some of these mycotoxins are more toxic than others which is why you can’t eat certain mushrooms and toadstools. One mycotoxin in particular is the most cancer causing substance known to man. It is called aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is one toxin which is tested for in the US. The other tested for is ochratoxin.

The problem with mycotoxins is that the body has a hard time getting rid of them once you have them inside your body. They accumulate in fat cells. They cause damage to tissues allowing disease and illness to get started. See the US Gov’t website for warnings on mold exposure. http://www.epa.gov/mold/moldresources

Another problem with mycotoxins is they cannot be killed. You can kill the mold growing in the shower, but you cannot kill the mycotoxins the mold produced. They are chemicals and were never alive. The same with the mold growing on your food. Even before you can see the mold colony growing it is producing roots (hyphae) and toxins. Selecting the freshest and best looking produce is very important.

Be aware that any mold in your home can cause health issues for you. Leaking water pipes, AC unit leaking, roof or gutters leaking. Since we are all different and have different weak points in our bodies, the toxins can cause varying reactions. Personally, mine were extreme itching, sensitivity to all soaps and detergents, allergies to pets, throat irritation, and the typical allergy symptoms of itchy watery eyes, runny nose and lung congestion.

Getting rid of the mold and the toxins they produce from our home and from my body has eliminated my allergy symptoms.

This week we will continue with questions which have been asked of me.

Q. Why is Crucial Health a different type of health food store?

A. First, a little about Crucial Health: My health research began with health issues my family and I were experiencing. Over the past ten to twelve years I have learned many health tips and most I have actually tried since I was suffering from the same symptoms many other people are suffering from . Much of what I was learning at that time was found to be false, misleading information, fads or even hoaxes.

I began to work toward becoming a certified herbalist then found a new line of study which caused me to set aside the certification program. This field of study opened a whole new area of research. The information was found to be true. My entire family began to live this new lifestyle and within a short time most of our problems began to disappear.

Now I use my time to continue researching problems which others bring to me. I know with a bit of research most problems can be worked through. So, if you come to Crucial Health and ask about your situation we will research it and give you the most up to date, factual information we can find. Working with your doctor we hope to help you become truly healthy and not spend money on products which do not work.

Staying healthy during flu and cold season. This was published back in autumn, but I thought it would be good to read again during all that has been going on lately.

Do you wonder what you can do to keep from getting sick this spring or to get rid of that bug sooner? Here are some practical tips:

* Get rid of sugar in your diet. This includes Corn Syrup, High-fructose Corn Syrup, Maltodextrin, fructose, dextrose and other -ose words. Sugars feed the infection and keep it stronger.
* Eat foods which build up the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a good start. Eating fresh foods as raw as possible will give you the most nutrients, enzymes and antioxidants.
* Vitamin C, Berries, antioxidants (found in dark colored fruits and veggies) and others can help shorten a cold or flu. A certified herbalist can suggest other natural viral fighters.
* Stay away from foods which lower the immune system. Corn and all corn products, chocolate, alcohols, soft drinks, mushrooms and processed foods.
* Wash hands often especially when you have been around others or out in the general public. Germs can stay alive on hard surfaces for several hours even days.
* And the most important, if you are sick stay home. This helps prevent spreading the bug.

One good home remedy is hydrogen peroxide. Personally, I use it in the mornings if I feel I'm coming down with something. Using a small spray bottle spray a mist into the air and breathe it though my nose. Take a clean breath and repeat. Next spray and breathe through the mouth. Take a clean breath and repeat. I do this morning and night. Usually have no symptoms the following morning. Over use can cause dry nose and occasionally a little nose bleeding. Either add 1/2 water or only breathe in once, not twice.

Hydrogen peroxide is an inexpensive remedy for many problems. Clean wounds, disinfect your counter tops, mop the floor, add to your humidifier, use to bleach cup towels among many other uses.

Following these suggestions can help your body fight for you during any illness outbreak.

What About Probiotics?

You may have seen a rush of new products on the grocery shelves claiming to help digestive issues which include something called “probiotics.” What exactly is a probiotic?

A probiotic is the opposite of an antibiotic. A live bacterial culture which occurs naturally in the human gut placed there to complete the digestive process allowing the nutrients from what we eat to be absorbed. Other jobs these good guys do include manufacturing many of the B Vitamins which give us energy, fighting against bad bacteria which can make us sick, reducing respiratory infections in children, lessening the severity of some inflammatory bowel diseases, improving symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, easing symptoms associated with dermatitis or eczema, decreasing recurrence of urogenital infections (UTIs), improving immune function and decreasing hypertension.

The problem with all those brands making claims is there are so many bacteria which are called “probiotics” which really aren’t. Just because they are a normal part of our gut doesn’t mean you need more of them. The strain of the bacteria is extremely important. Some of these companies have genetically modified a bacteria and mass produced it so they can patent it allowing them to make other claims.

From the research I’ve done it is important to buy a probiotic product which contains safe strains, is refrigerated when purchased and not in a heat-pressed tablet form. Eating certain brands of yogurt is also good. Look for one which is organic and has live cultures. Plain flavors are best. Add your own fresh fruit and sweeteners. The brands which taste like candy are just that, candy, and have little to no nutritional value.

Good strains to look for are Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium infantis, and Streptococcus thermophilus.

The World Health Organization says not to consume one with any Enterococcus, Bacillus or Lactobacillus sporogenes species on the label.

Some products carry a “pre-biotic.” A prebiotic is a fiber or other food source for the bacteria. Unfortunately, many people cannot utilize a prebiotic. These food sources can cause severe bloating and gas in some people. Look for a product which does not contain this.

Let’s recap probiotics. Refrigerated, live cultures, Good strains, Avoid bad strains, no prebiotic. We carry BioActive Nutrients probiotics.

What about Salt?

Many people have been told not to consume salt because of various health issues. This is true. Table salt contains only two minerals sodium and chloride. Manufacturers sell the other minerals separately which naturally occur in real salt for various other products. To make matters worse they bleach the sodium chloride to get rid of the smell and make it pure white.

The best type of salt for human and animal consumption is Himalayan salt. Himalayan Salt contains 84 minerals which are all essential for human and animal health.

Lack of adequate salt intake causes many problems. Salt balances the water content of every cell. Having too much water makes us puffy and having too little means we are dehydrated. Sea Salt causes each cell to hold only the amount of water it needs to maintain health. There is salt water surrounding each cell as well. The balance between the two is very important.

Allowing our bodies to get dehydrated is much more dangerous than you might think. Most American are chronically dehydrated. According to Dr. Batmanghelidj most diseases can be linked to some form of dehydration. These “diseases” are actually associated with too little water and sea salt. Asthma, arthritis, high blood pressure, edema, and allergies. You can read all about his research at www.watercure2.org. He offers the way to find out just how much water and salt you need each day for your body. Everyone is different.
