Unintentional Explosive Ruin. Maybe? Developers+Coders plz read!

I am unsure if this is a bug, an unintentional bug due to coding, or it was intentionally placed in the game from the developers.
Long story short. I was playing against a friend of mine. He was playing mage and I was playing druid. He played the secret, Explosive Ruins. Deals 6 damage to a minion when played, any excess damage is dealt to the hero instead.
On my upcoming turn, i played C'thun's Chosen. A 4 mana drop with a 4/2 body, and divine shield.
Assuming the divine shield would absorb all the 6 damage. I felt safe.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
My friend and I thought the same. And couldn't believe what actually happened.
My C'thun's Chosen took 2 damage to his divine shield. And my hero took 4.
One would assume based on the card text and properties of divine shield that the minion would have took the full 6 damage, and I none because the card text "...any excess to their hero" There was no excess of damage.
Could be the coding since the secret probably is coded to deal the exact number of damage to the minion based on it's health. This case being 2.
Or it could be a developer's intentional way of designing the card and its interaction with hearthstones various other cards.
The latter being kinda odd and I as well as many others when coming across this scenario might feel odd too.
Some light on the situation would be much appreciated.

Any help appreciated.

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
