Name: Katherine Vanderveer Alias: Kat Species: Metahuman Gender: Female Age: 23 Height: 5'3" Weight: 120lbs. Ethnicity: Caucasian Appearance: Kat wears the basics, typically jeans, a tank top, and a jacket when appropriate. --- Powers: Gravity Manipulation: Kat can alter gravity in her immediate area, which is utilized in a variety of ways. In order to do this, Kat first mentally stops gravity's effects on her, which lets her float freely in a small area as if in space. This can also be used to stop momentum. Then, she can create an artificial gravity in that area toward any direction, which sends her hurdling in that direction as if in free fall. While Kat is virtually able to 'fly', she can only control gravity for one minute before having to rest. Her rest period is only about 10 seconds, but this prevents her from extended use of her power. Autonomous Gravity Control: Kat's brain has created automatic functions based around her powers. Even a fall at terminal velocity affects Kat the same way as falling from a standing position. Attacking Kat using throws or forcing her to fall is ineffective. Kat is also able to jump higher (10 feet) and run faster (25mph) than normal. This is always active. Stasis Field: Kat also has the ability to create a stasis field around her. This field behaves in the same way as her base power, but can be used to suspend objects rather than her person. Since items suspended in the field are weightless, she can carry anything, so long as it remains wholly within the field. The field is always centered on Kat; she can not create a field at a distance or move independently from it. The stasis field is a maximum of 5m in diameter. Kat can use both of her powers at once. Kat's powers enable her to perform a wide variety of actions. Besides replicating flight, her Stasis power is not unlike Telekinesis. If she shifts gravity towards a wall, she will be able to walk on the wall as if it were the ground. By focusing gravity towards an angle at the ground, she can simulate inclines. With her stasis field, she can carry people with her. By utilizing falling velocity, she can add tremendous amounts of force to her attacks. Fighting Skills: Unique Style: As a ballet dancer, gymnist and martial artist free from the constraints of gravity, Kat has developed a style all her own. She utilizes graceful ballet movements, acrobatic gymnastic tumbles and rolls, and moves from Muay Thai, TaeKwonDo, and Capoeira. Her style primarily consists of hit-and-run tactics, and using her gravity shifting to confuse or aggrevate her opponent. She has no problems fighting a person on the ground while she is standing on the ceiling or walls, or even while floating. Using her velocity from a fall, she can add up to 150mph of force to a kick. Other Skills: Fall control: Kat is an expert at controlling herself while falling. Since she doesn't have a way to manipulate her facing or how she falls through her powers, she has become adept at manipulating her body during flight to change direction and speed, not unlike a Skydiver. --- Personality: Kat is very much the 'goody-goody' of the two siblings. While she would never rat out her brother with his mischief, she'd do her best to keep him safe and fix any collateral problems. On the other hand, Kat hates injustice, especially when the conflict is one-sided. She'd do everything in her power to help, even when it means standing up to impossible odds; Kat undoubtedly fits into the "heroic" role. In the absence of conflict, Kat is a sociable, cheery girl, but can be a bit full of herself at times. She sometimes points out faults in others without thinking about consequences, which obviously leads to trouble. She finds it difficult to empathize with immoral or unlawful people, even when they have valid reasons to be doing what they're doing. Kat also has a deep seated guilt with how things turned out with her brother. Though she affirms that it was his fault, she still thinks she could've handled him better. Deep down, however, she can't help but feel a bit of scorn for Morgan and his actions. History: Katherine is the first daughter in this generation of the illustrious Vanderveer family, who have been massively successful for generations. Vanderveers are everywhere money is; they've been lawyers, politicians, and big business owners. Simply having the name bestows a certain 'clout'. Like it or not, people in powerful circles talk about Vanderveers. Though the world of high society might be daunting to some, Katherine had always taken it in stride. Growing up, Katherine was the model daughter. She was academic yet clever, and reserved while not seeming delicate. She thoroughly enjoyed learning, whether that was through school or with her first love, ballet. As soon as she was able, Katherine's mother had her on the dance floor. Like everything else, she not only did it but she did it well. Ballet led naturally into gymnastics, where she first discovered martial arts. Some of the friends she made in gymnastics, she noticed, used it as a tool to further their TaeKwonDo. Naturally curious, Kat followed. Again, she took to it quite well, though her parents weren't completely thrilled with the idea of fighting. As Kat went into high school, her schedule eventually collapsed, and the victim was her grades. Katherine's father Jack, already at the end of his rope with Kat and her TKD, pulled her out of TaeKwonDo. Needless to say, Kat was furious, but even she knew there wasn't much to be done. Katherine took it, but kept up with the friends she made. Years later, the day before high school graduation, Kat was horsing around with her TKD friends. Rough housing turned into sparring, and Kat ended up with an accidental black eye. Again, her father was furious. When he forbade her from seeing her friends and going to gymnastics, Kat found herself arguing back. They went back in forth, until suddenly they found themselves on the ceiling of their foyer. When gravity suddenly returned to normal, Jack had broken his leg on the fall, while Kat was unharmed. No one said it, but they both knew; Katherine was a Metahuman. Jack, while in the hospital, completely froze up; he didn't know how to handle something like this. Katherine took his complete lack of communication as hatred, and she ran. Thanks to her brother, Kat was able to skim off a nice amount of money from her parents' income. She said goodbye to her brother, and left. Jack and Madeline, Kat's mother, while extremely worried, let her have her space. They knew their daughter, and the world wouldn't make a victim of her, even if she was a metahuman. Katherine found herself in New York. At first, she was terrified of the outdoors. The thought of suddenly falling into the sky kept her indoors except when it was impossible otherwise. Eventually, however, she learned to control her powers, and flying around New York became second nature. Thanks to her brother's more shady contacts, Kat was able to secure a false identity. She used this to ditch the well-known Vanderveer name, so she could concentrate on herself. As soon as she had a little free-time, Kat found herself in martial arts circles again, but this time it wasn't just TaeKwonDo; Muay Thai and Capoiera caught her eye. Over the next five years, Kat honed her skills in these styles. While she had a long way to go until she was a master at any, she was capable of spectacular feats, especially when she mixed her power over gravity into the mix. When Kat heard about the escalating metahuman conflicts back in L.A., she found it time to return. Both having the skills and ability to protect people and make a difference meant, to Kat, that it was her responsibility to do so. On her return, her brother revealed that he too was a metahuman and wanted to fight crime and help as best he could. Only seeing his past life, Kat scolded him, and the two lost contact. Some time later, Kat happened upon a bank robbery. The police hadn't yet responded, and Morgan was inside. Kat dispatched two of the robbers, while Morgan took out the other two. The leader had taken a hostage, and bargained for his release. Kat, seeing no options, agreed. Morgan, however, did not. When Morgan attacked, he accidentally used too much of his power, and killed both the hostage and the robber. Seeing his mistake he fled. When Kat caught up to him, their talk escalated quickly into a fight, after which Morgan disappeared. When Kat told their parents what happened, they blamed her. Ostracized by her parents, and hated by her brother, the only thing she could do was continue helping people in any way she could to change public opinion of metahumans, hoping that one day she'd get a second chance to talk to Morgan.
