Cold

Ioanna was all packed up and ready to leave for Ireland, just as she had done the past two years. She was just taking some time to walk around the courtyard. It was a bit nippy, but not terribly cold. Ioanna had exchanged her usual white stockings for some warmer knit ones, but otherwise, her black and white ensemble hadn't changed. She'd be at the station with plenty of time to spare. She just wanted to stare hopefully over the misty horizon of the Black Lake for a few more minutes.

Nothing. He heart sank for the thousandth time that term. She knew it was stupid to think that he might come for her. He probably didn't even know she existed. She reached into her pocket and produced from it a wrinkled bit of parchment which she opened and, for the millionth time, she stared at her father's wanted poster, watching him repeat the same smug expression for her over, and over again.

"Ew, why do you have that?" someone from behind her shrieked.

Ioanna jumped. She hadn't heard anyone approaching her. Her heart suddenly jumped into her throat, where it thumped violently. Quickly, she tried to stuff the parchment back into her pocket, but a cold hand grabbed her wrist before she could.

Ioanna spun around, her wrist still clutched in the paw of some menacing creature, to see that there was a gang of girls about her age, made up of Slytherins and a few of her fellow Ravenclaws, assembled around her. A slightly taller girl with blonde hair and a scarf of Slytherin green-and-silver was the one clutching her wrist.

"Give me that," the girl said, her bright blue eyes and upturned nose suggesting an innocence that was long ago lost, if it ever had been there to begin with. Her hands showed her for what she really was: one grasped Ioanna's wrist in an unbreakable grip, the other clawed the parchment out of her hand. When the parchment was safely in her claws, the blonde Slytherin girl threw Ioanna to the ground with little effort, despite Ioanna being at least an inch taller. "This that weird girl you were talking about, Elsa? The one who always ignored you when you were trying to be nice." she asked, craning her head to address a thin, swarthy Ravenclaw girl."

"The loony?" said Elsa with sneer, "Yeah, that's her, Morgan. Always staring out at nothing, acting like some stuck-up bitch."

"What is she wearing?" exclaimed another girl.

"And those pigtails", shrieked yet another "what are you, six!?"

"We know what you're asking for with that Lolita-look, eh girls?" said the fifth girl. All of them laughed.

Suddenly, Ioanna felt very claustrophobic. It was like their laughter had taken form, and was closing in on her. The Hogwarts Grounds suddenly felt very small, and Ioanna, small still.

"Sh," Morgan demanded, "Guys. Look at this." The leader of the pack held out the parchment for all to see. "Got a thing for dark wizards, weird girl? Come on, speak up!"

Ioanna couldn't speak. No air could get past her throbbing heart, still lodged in her throat. She was paralyzed, like she was under the effect of a spell. She couldn't even think. Like a cornered opossum, all she could do was play dead and hope that her predators would lose interest.

Then Morgan bent over and began poking her in the chest.

"Hey, bitch," she demanded, "Don't ignore me. I'm talking to you. Hey. Hey! Do you know who I am? Who my family is? I asked you a question. Are. You. Into. Dirty. Fucking. Pirates."

And just like that, the paralysis spell was broken. Ioanna didn't even perceive the transition between being immobile on the ground, tightened up against Morgan's prodding and standing over the other girl's prostrate body, her own hand splattered with blood that wasn't her own.

"Oh shit," said one of the girls, "Morgan. Morgan, are you alright."

A snarl came from the fallen girl. "Get her," she growled.

Instantly, the other four girls dove on her, grabbing her arms and legs and pinning her down on the cold hard ground. Morgan had gotten up and now stood over her, blood running from her nose. The blonde Slytherin's wand was out, pointing directly at Ioanna's face.

"Stupid move, Lolita bitch," she said. Ioanna screwed her eyes shut against the inevitable.

Antoine was out giving Tango a walk, it was something that the two did, besides he was a dog and need to relieve himself sometimes. Listening to what was going on Antoine found himself headed over to what sounded like a cat fight. "Hey you," Antoine pulled the girl off the top, of the smaller girl. "You're late, O'Malley's not going to wait around to have his dick sucked. You know that." The girl looked horrified before scurrying off. Antoine shook his head, he'd overheard the boy talking about the night before, with someone or rather, and had taken a stab at who it had been. Seemed he was right.

Tango jumped on top of the little girl and growled at the other's even snipping at one. Antoine knew he should have corrected the dog's behavior but he didn't instead he waited until Tango scarred the others, it didn't take much with their ring leader gone, and then called the 'mean, vicious, monstrosity,' over to him.

"Hey you, alright?" He offered the girl a hand up, while Tango licked her hand and pranced around her hoping for attention. "They didn't hurt you too bad did they?" Antoine was rubbing his hands up and down her arms checking for injuries. He didn't feel any, which was a good thing. "Where are your friends?" He moved his head listening for someone to come running to the girl's defense but nobody did.

"Well wherever they are, it's not here- Tango leave the poor girl alone, she doesn't want to play fetch." Tango's head dropped down, and he made his way over to his owner's side before laying down, and pouting. Antoine rolled his eyes, Tango was so melodramatic. "Sorry about him, he thinks everyone loves him." Antoine had no clue who the small girl was, just that she had needed help, and so he'd helped.

The inevitable took a raincheck, it seemed. Instead of a curse to the the face, Ioanna felt her face being licked by a big, warm, slobbering tongue. She let the dog attend to her, still a little dazed.

"Hey you, alright?" Said the boy who had scared the girls off. He held a hand out to her. Without the ability to think too much on it in her current state, Ioanna grasped the hand up and let the boy help her to her feet. "They didn't hurt you too bad did they? Where are your friends?" he asked, rubbing his hands up and down her arms.

Ioanna would have been as freaked out about this as the girls that were just about to curse her into next week, if it weren't for the fact that she was still in a bit of shock over having just broken Morgan Lysandre's nose and lived to tell the tale.

"Well wherever they are, it's not here- Tango leave the poor girl alone, she doesn't want to play fetch."

Ioanna watched as the dog slunk back to his master, defeated. This somehow snapped her out of her state of shock.

"Oh," she said, "I-It's alright. He's really sweet." She didn't look at the boy who had saved her, but, instead, kept her eyes on the dog. They were easier to look at than people, "Um...thank you," she added.

Antoine sighed. Tango was a ladies man. "Yeah, he's adorable. What was going on there?" Antoine shifted weight and Tango got up and brought a stick back, without thinking the boy bent down retreived the stick from the dog's mouth and threw it. Tango chased after it barking happily. "I just walked in on the last part.... You don't have very many friends do you?" He smiled, to let her know that he wasn't judging her just curious.

"Which means you won't be going to the dance with anyone, because, I'm going with a group of friends, if you're free. If not I understand." Antoine stuck his hands in his jean pockets as he waited for the dog to come back. Tango did make people more comfortable around him, that was for sure.

"Oh, um...those girls," said Ioanna, "They were just...um...being...being bitches." She mumbled the last part. Ioanna didn't really know what to say other than that. "I didn't mean to break her nose. I just sort of...did."

"I just walked in on the last part.... You don't have very many friends do you?"

"I have one friend," she said, defending herself a bit, "But she's not here right now. I haven't seen around in a while. She's busy. You know."

Ariella had promised to see her again, but she hadn't really spoken to the older girl since the beginning of the term. She'd seen her around, of course, but Ioanna figured that the Slytherin socialite was too busy with her other friends, and didn't want to bother her.

"Which means you won't be going to the dance with anyone, because, I'm going with a group of friends, if you're free. If not I understand." Antoine stuck his hands in his jean pockets as he waited for the dog to come back. Tango did make people more comfortable around him, that was for sure.

Ioanna's eyes widened. Her head snapped up to meet Antoine's gaze--except, she didn't. Antoine wasn't exactly looking at her. Suddenly, she realized that he was blind. Somehow, this made it easier. Even though she could feel her cheeks grow very hot, she knew he couldn't see her. She realized that he had a problem with his sight, just as he she did--though, she supposed, they had exactly opposite problems.

She also realized that he was really, really very really handsome.

Tango came bounding back with the stick. This time, Ioanna took the slobber-covered stick in her hand. Smiling, she threw the stick and giggled as the dog went running after it with gusto.

"I'd have to write my ma," she said, "She's expecting me home for Christmas, but she won't mind--and I need to figure out where I can get a dress at such short notice--I mean, sure. I'd like that."

Why wouldn't she? The boy was nice, and he had a nice dog, and he was cute! His blindness only enhanced his charm for Ioanna. It made him seem more relatable, perhaps even attainable. And he'd asked her! She'd never been asked to the ball before. She'd never been to the ball.

"Well, want to be Queen Bee's typically are bitches. It's just the way the world works. When was the last time your friend hung out with you?" Antoine was being cruel, he couldn't help it. One mean action created another. "Sorry I'm just a little tense." Nightmare after nightmare plagued him, all about Merida, and this time when he woke up in cold sweats asking for her she wasn't there.

"Tango you traitor.." He was smiling, anytime there was anyone else around the dog went to them, as long as he sensed Antoine wasn't in trouble. Tango would go to a complete stranger if they showed him attention. The poor dog was attention deprived, he was much better suited as a pet, then a service dog, but he served Antoine loyally.

Antoine nodded and stood up cracking his back. "Good, how about we meet at the staircase around eight-ish?" He wasn't really asking if eight was an okay time to meet he was telling her he'd be there at eight and that was that. Not being able to see Merida tonight had put him in a bad mood, but he was going to try to work out of that.

Tango came pounding back and dropped the stick at the girl's feet. Bouncing back and forth, tail wagging waiting on it to be thrown again. "He'll keep playing as long as you throw the stick. " Antoine could wait until the girl got tired of playing fetch, besides that meant less running for him with Tango. And the girl seemed to be enjoying the little game, it would be mean to rip it away without any meaning.

"Oh yeah," said Ioanna, "I get like that, too--tense, I mean! Not bitchy." Nervous laughter escaped her lips, "I'm not bitchy."

"Tango you traitor.." said Antoine as the dog came bounding back to Ioanna. Ioanna giggled, more for Antoine than for Tango.

"Good, how about we meet at the staircase around eight-ish?" he said.

Tango came pounding back and dropped the stick at the girl's feet. Bouncing back and forth, tail wagging waiting on it to be thrown again. "He'll keep playing as long as you throw the stick."

Ioanna giggled again as she took the stick from Tango. That's the second time in less than a few minutes. What's wrong with you?

"Oh, I don't mind," said Ioanna, "Ma would never let me have a dog. Said it would mess up the shop. Oh, and sure," said Ioanna in mid-swing, "I just hope there's a clothing store at Hogsmeade still open, and--oh!" She turned and faced Antoine, eyes widened with a horrible realization. "I don't even know your name! Mine's Ioanna. Ioanna MacGowan."

Antoine listened to the girl giggle and wondered exactly how old she was? Since becoming blind he often didn't make girls giggle, probably because he kept to himself but he kept his opinions of that topic to himself. "I'm sure somewhere will be open." He couldn't believe the girl didn't have a single dress to wear.

Shaking his head he listened as the girl giggled at Tango. Tango he knew would be kept upstairs for the dance, but he also knew the chance of him chewing on Antoine's shoes was limited because of this girl playing fetch with him. "Antoine, Antoine Belrose." Antoine's accent slipped and for a moment it was easy to see that he was the French tribute.

"Don't sound so horrified Ioanna, it's just a dance. Besides every friend starts out not knowing the other's name." Antoine grinned as Tango huffed out, tired but content. The dog reached it's snout out and nuzzled Ioanna's hand as a thank you, before making it's way over to Antoine and put one paw on Antoine's jeans. "Well that's my signal to go, see you later Ioanna." With that Antoine left the courtyard with Tango trotting beside him.

"Okay," Ioanna called out after him, "See you there!"

Ioanna took a deep breath and blinked. Did that just happen? She hadn't had a real friend since primary school, much less ever seen a guy actually seem interested in her. It wasn't even something she ever really thought about, except, occasionally she wished she was like the other girls. Not that she wanted to be like Morgan and her band of vipers. She didn't want to be popular that badly. Still, it was nice to receive some attention from the opposite sex.

"Oh," she said to herself, "I have so much to do now."

With that, she raced off to the Ravenclaw Tower to write her mother and tell her she wouldn't be coming back.
