Just add exclimation mark.

Mille sat down on the couch with a groan. This was about as high up on her list of I-want-to-do-this-thing things as resurfacing the Landon rink with a toothbrush, no magic involved.

In other words, not at all.

On screen? On world news? With her grandfather? Mille could never be considered shy, but the truth was that she hated being recognized on the street....or at all, really, unless someone was a personal friend of hers. Her grandfather knew that she hated being a part of that world and now....

Especially over break. Despite her motor mouth, she'd been able to keep the secret that her grandfather was the muggle equivalent of....oh hell, she never paid attention to famous, rich purebloods really, she was just here to learn. But her grandfather was like a king, the pharmaceutical company his empire. Her point was that she'd been keeping that secret quite nicely.

She was hiding in plain sight from her closest friends. She'd liked the feeling of not being expected to be anything other than who she was.

Although she'd known that the deb society her grandfather had made her contribute to in the summers was stocked with heirs and heiresses, and thus, usually made news from people wondering how celebrity kids acted; she hadn't really thought about her first cotillion until now. To be honest, she thought with going to Hogwarts she'd be kicked out before then.

Obviously not the case. Anyone with ties to the muggle world would know her little secret.

Her life was over.

Okay, this wasn't the end of the world. At least this wasn't the time that Liam had been-- Not thinking about it, not thinking about it, stop thinking about it, Mills -- but she was very scared that no one would see her the same after. She was already considered to be just an idiot muggleborn. She didn't want to be someone untouchable either.

She let her head fall into her hands. What was she going to do? She had no idea. Obviously the secret being kept was lost cause.

Her only hope was that no one would care. She was considered a weirdo among the Ravenclaws, but kids in other houses would probably not recognize her in a line up. Maybe no one would notice.

Except Liam would definitely find out. His mother was a reporter and worked in the muggle world.

Not that she didn't trust him, but she was just...scared. Ok, not scared, just really...nervous. What would he say? Would he even understand? Would he hate her?

That was the one she really didn't want to think about.

Okay, maybe she was thinking too much about him, but so what? It was a free country, wasn't it?

Plus, even if that wasn't an issue, she didn't look forward to the staring and the recognizing, everywhere. Gramps had been pretty good about her wish of staying out of the media as a child so that she wouldn't be recognized on the street. She hated it, all those eyes on her and...

Her worst nightmares were filled with eyes staring at her. She liked people, she liked playing, but stick her in the spotlight for no actual reason and she was terrified.

Did she have any option? She didn't know.

Liam shook damp hair out of his eyes as he entered the Ravenclaw common room. He'd been at the prefects bath. They were quiet, peaceful, and, perhaps most importantly, far, far away from whining first years. It wasn't that he didn't feel for them-truly he did-it was just that there were only so many times one could be called to a dormitory by hysterical screaming caused by someone reading too fast before one just stopped caring. Maybe he was an ass, but he let Carmen deal with them now. His expression brightened as he caught sight of Mille.

"Hey, Osset!"
Liam grinned, plopping down beside his fellow fifth year. "Long time no see, huh?" He prodded the girl lightly in the side, his grin slipping. She had her face firmly buried in her hands. "Mille, is something up? You've been avoiding everyone since school started back up again." It was true. Mille had left school her normal, hyperactive self and had returned jumpy and dejected. Though he'd initially been terrified that another one of his friends had been attacked, no such report ever surfaced on the news. No. There was something distinctly ordinary bothering her. He prodded again.

"You in there, Osset? C'mon."
Though his words were teasing, Liam's voice was full of concern. Hadn't she had a good break? Danny had told him all about 'that cute little girl you brought over the summer before fourth year' and the ball she had attended. Liam had initially been surprised-he hadn't realized she was Mille Osset as in the Osset family-but he'd gotten over it. Empire or not, she was still Mille. "Is someone giving you shit? Do I need to hand out some detentions?"

Growing old is manditory, but growing up is optional.

She startled a little when Liam poked her in the side. Despite her current distress, she smiled-- Liam was one of her closest friends, and could usually get her to smile (even if, unlike usual, this smile didn't fully reach her eyes). "Liam." She said. She wanted to talk to him, but at the same time she didn't want to talk to him. He would find out eventually. Ms. O'Conner would tell him, or it would be passed around school. And then it would be like back in the muggle world. Again. "Yeah, been a little busy." Trying to pretend I don't exist so it doesn't hurt as much when it all ends. Ok, so she'd been avoiding him a bit. She was living a lie. What was she supposed to do?

Plus, she really had been busy. All the owls her grandfather had been sending her with dress ideas and manners lessons were annoying, but if she was going to be on national television, she at least didn't want to make a fool out of herself.

"It's nothing." She said, her voice picking up pace. "I, um....I got some bad news when I was home, that's all. It's nothing, really." Understatement of the century. She tried to move the letter just a little farther away from Liam, so he wouldn't actually see it.

She shrugged. "It's not even really a problem, you know?" She said. "I shouldn't be getting so upset. There are so many people out there with real problems and I'm just being petty. I don't really have the right to complain."

"Oh, Merlin, Mill, I'm so sorry." Liam murmured, running a hand through his hair. He should have figured that her current demeanor had more to do with recent news than anything that had happened over break. He motioned to the letter Mille was not-so-subtly hiding from him. "Do you want to talk about it? No one is, well I mean, it's not like-Is anyone hurt?" He shook his head. Why did it seem like shit always happened over the breaks? Liam had been shuttled back and forth between Ireland and school. Daniela didn't want him out of her sight. Kevin didn't want him out of his. Parental tug of war. Not exactly Liam's definition of fun.

"Just because other people have problems, doesn't mean that yours aren't any less significant."
Liam said earnestly, "Seriously, something's off with you. Is something wrong with Cotillion? I know it can be stressful but seriously, don't worry about it, you'll be fine." His mom had almost sent him into something similar when he was a boy. Dance and etiquette lessons. Liam had raised hell and holed himself up in the library. Who needed actual dancing when you had books on dancing?

"You know you can talk to me right?"
He murmured, "If something's up, let me know. I can help."

"What?" she looked up in surprise. She hadn't thought he would think that. "No. No one's hurt, I promise." She sighed. Everything was just coming to a head. Her cotillion was coming up and she felt like hiding in a corner until it all just went away. "Liam, I've been living a lie. She chuckled, but there was no humor in her voice. "Even with you. It was nice while it lasted." She shrugged. "It's just that for once, I was nobody. Just a stupid, hyper muggleborn. No one knew my name, no one had any expectations. I was evaluated on my own merits. I know it sounds strange, and now..." she trailed off. Everything she was saying probably sounded stupid, but this was the last chance she'd actually get to talk to him and dang it, he was a good listener, always had been.

"I'm sorry...I'm so sorry...I should have said something first....wait." She replayed his words through her head, trying to find the odd thing out. Then she heard it. "Liam, how in Merlin's name do you know about Cotillion?" She had never mentioned it. How was that supposed to fit into her 'I'm-keeping-this-secret' routine? Oh God.... Please don't let Ms. O'Conner have been that one reporter at the last junior event, I thought she looked familiar, please let me be wrong...

Liam waved his hand dismissively. "My mother was there. She did a story on the whole thing." He tugged his legs up on to the couch, resting his cheek on his knees and watching Mille quietly. He understood her concern. In the muggle world, perhaps the reveal would have been a huge shock. Certainly for Liam, who found himself a member of both worlds, the news was rather surprising. But for those like McKinnon and Moreau, who lived in utter ignorance of the muggle world, the news would change nothing.

"Don't worry about it. It's your life. Your thing to disclose but honestly, Mill, I think you're overthinking it. It won't change very many things. I'm sure there are students here who have no idea who your family is. As long as you don't make it a big deal, I promise, no one else will." Liam shrugged, running a hand through his hair. "You're upset and I get that but if you let people see this is a sensitive topic for you, they'll take advantage of that." He nudged her with his arm, patting her shoulder and grinning.

"It's not a big deal, Mill. Promise. Anyone who gives you shit, I'll nail them with my prefect powers. Dictator O'Connor."
Liam was trying to get her to crack a smile.

Growing old is manditory, but growing up is optional.

Oh Merlin. That was Ms. O'Connor. Fan-flipping tastic. She was seen in all of her glory...

She felt a million emotions at once. The first was relief. He didn't hate her. He didn't hate her for keeping this secret from him, he still wanted to be her friend. The second was anger. Why exactly did he keep that from her? Why hadn't he told her that he knew? It would have made her life a whole load easier!

Then she let it go, mostly because until now, it probably hadn't come up. They'd mostly talked about hockey and Quiditch and Hogwarts things, although he was her best friend and she felt like she could share anything with him. Plus, she reminded herself, she was being rather hypocritical. He was keeping a secret about knowing hers. An eye for an eye probably worked just fine in this situation. A secret for a secret.

The third was minor panic. She realized it was rather comical, but her ridiculous fear of cameras wasn't so ridiculous to her. Had Ms. O'Connor realized she was hiding in a corner to avoid the cameras all the time? Hopefully not. She chuckled. Fantastic. She was afraid of Liam's mother, one of the kindest women she'd had the pleasure of meeting. All because of what she held in her hands.

Mille sighed, and tried to articulate this into words. "Next time." She joked. "Just tell me you don't hate me when you find out, yeah? I was afraid of loosing my anonymity, but I was afraid of loosing you, too. You're my friend, Liam, and I know you're a good one, but I don't...." She shrugged. "I've had three real friends in my life other than my sister. You're one of them." She didn't continue on, to say that she didn't know why she thought that. Why she'd been so insecure. She trusted him in everything else. Finally she said. "I probably could have thought it through more. But I think I would have been insecure regardless of whether I trusted you or not. It's a part of me, and it has nothing to do with who you are." Ah, the deep side of Mille Osset. Long time, no see.

"Did your Mom mention my fear of cameras?" She asked, not a hint of humor in her voice. She'd never actually mentioned this....to anyone. "I swear to Merlin, Liam, if you laugh, if you ever come to one of my hockey games I'll tell the other guys that you play hockey and just sit there as they swarm you." This wasn't necessarily true. She'd pull him out after a few seconds. She shivered. "Seriously, the whole concept of steeling someone's face and keeping it for all eternity....isn't that just freaking creepy? Am I the only one who thinks this?"

She looked up at him. "You think?" Not many people really cared about Mille Osset. She did have to remind herself that it was the wizarding world, and not the muggle one. She was still learning about how it all worked. Maybe they really didn't give a crap. After all, what did they want pharmaceuticals for, when they had potions instead. She smiled sheepishly. "I hadn't really thought of it that way. I'd forgotten that most wizards use potions instead, yeah? Or magical cures? Most wizards probably don't give a flying fladoodle about Samuel Osset." It was almost a bigger sense of relief.

Now that she thought about it, maybe she could have thought it through more before going strait to panic.

She smiled, looked strait at him. She seemed more energetic than she had in a week. She fingered her Mum's pendant. 'It doesn't matter who you are on the outside. Only you and those you let in really know you, and that's true for everyone.' Maybe Mum was right. "Dictator O'Connor, huh? May I ask how the regime's doing? It was said playfully. She was teasing him, somewhat. That, and she wasn't sure that she'd asked how his prefect duties were going.
