Hey all. This thread is not directed at anyone in particular and is for educational purposes only. There are two things that I would like to mention that will, in my opinion, increase the general quality of the posts on the site: pronoun usage, and apostrophe usage. Pronouns Pronouns are, in a nutshell, any words you can use to substitute for a subject in your sentence. I, you, me, he, her, them, it, who, that, etc. The main thing to remember when using pronouns is that it can be easy to make them ambiguous. When using a pronoun, it is very important to establish or re-establish the subject so people reading your posts know who you are talking about. For example, if I begin my post with "He entered the Great Hall and sat down", it is completely possible that "he" is someone other than my character. Yes, I'm obviously speaking about my character, but leaving things ambiguous can be confusing for people who are reading post after post in a thread where the main subject changes between each reply. When starting a new reply, please be sure to restate your character's name at the beginning. Do not begin using pronouns (him, her, etc.) without having mentioned their name. Apostrophes This is actually something that I am proud to say that the site does pretty well with. There are very few instances on the site of using the wrong variation of your/you're, for example, which I'm very happy about. Here is a quick review: You're = you are. Your = you possess something. "Your bike". It's and its are two that people sometimes struggle with. They follow the exact same conventions: It's = it is. Its = it possesses something. "Its bike". An easy way to remember this is that apostrophes are never used to show ownership for pronouns. His, hers, its. - Correct. Hi's, her's, and it's. - Wrong. Another thing to keep in mind about apostrophes, and the main thing that I would like to point out is that apostrophes are used to demonstrate possession with regular and proper nouns. Examples: Dave's bike. Amelia's broom. My band's song. And the most important rule of all: apostrophes are never ever used to denote plural words in normal situations. Banana's. - Wrong. Slytherin's.- Wrong. The McKelvey's.- Wrong. Please see this webpage (click me!) for some very helpful information on apostrophe usage. There are several minor exceptions (dot your i's and cross your t's), but otherwise, please do not use apostrophes this way. If there is anything that you feel should be added here, please contact me. |

HIRP now has a Common Knowledge, Recent Events, and Rumours thread, which contains all the information that your characters should know having grown up in our world. Please be sure to check it out and feel free to use the knowledge in character. If you have suggestions for minor characters who might be well known, please contact a staff member. |
