FIRE PURE RISE

The November wind swept the remaining leaves up into a current before gently laying them on the floor. The days were shorter, and it was dusk when Dolores stepped out to the courtyard, hands deep in her navy coat, black skirt swishing with every aching step she took. I'm not that girl anymore. I won't break from human touch.

She stopped to pick a place to sit. The courtyard wasn't much occupied on a Friday night; most students took to their dorms for late night secret parties. Dolores shuddered. No alcohol, no tears, no problems. She selected a tree and then sat at the base. She leaned against the trunk, then kicked her feet up in a rock.

Her heartbeat slowed as she relaxed. The breeze scattered dark strands of hair across her face, and she didn't move to push them away. She was at peace. Blue eyes observed, but never made judgement. She was Dolores on the dotted line, but always Lolita.

After John had walked Sally Haze up to the Ravenclaw Tower, he made the exhausting trek downwards again to spend some time in the courtyard. It wasn't long before people began to question John and Sally's relationship: Who was she? Did he like her? Were they dating?

She's an orphan, said John, who never knew her parents. She doesn't even know her blood status or her hometown. No, said John, she's fourteen for Merlin's sake. No, said John, she was like a little sister to him. Was that it? Did people care that he was trying to be a good person?

He kicked aside a pebble onto its back. Gossip circulated quickly at Hogwarts, which was why he avoided leaving his dorm. People turned, lied and cheated. It was a sick, sick ugly world, and John was only doing what he could to stay afloat. Endure and survive.

John slowed when he spotted the lonely figure at the tree. It was Dolores Draper, the girl who had drunkenly thrown herself at him at the Halloween Feast six days ago. He had purposely avoided her all week, but now he felt the dread cement in his gut like a concrete lump. Might as well get it over with. He approached her, cautious and hesitant.

"Dolores," His voice was low and guttural. Dominant. "How are you?" He noted the change of hair color. She looked... beautiful.

Dolly looked up when she heard a deep grunt. Fucking Adler. Her eyelids fluttered, cheeks pulsing with the heat of embarrassment. It was too soon. She wanted to write him a letter - this was something she couldn't do face-to-face. Time was ticking, and she was allowing his question to hang out to dry in the air. Say something.

"Look, let's skip the polite talk."
Her voice was solid. No more Pushover Dolly. "I'm sorry for the Halloween Feast. I'm sure you know this already, but I was a mess without Teddy. I'm slightly better now. I promise I'm not like the girl you saw last weekend."

There. Instead of dancing around the problem, she decided to dive headfirst, and for once in her life, she felt like she was in charge. No one was telling her what to do. She was her own boss. "I still think you're cute though."

John chewed on his lower lip as Dolores confessed an apology. He forgave her, of course, as Theodore Wickham's death had an impact on them all. Even from afar, John had found himself admiring the Wickham boy, so quite and polite, yet he drew attention like a wild fire. It was a depressing waste of something that could be so good. And Dolores had known him best.

"I understand." He said, eyes accidentally tramping upon her bare legs. "I forgot it happened." John dug his hands into his pockets. He wore jeans and a plain white shirt since class was over and it was Friday night. He had no particular place to be, and he sensed that Dolores would keep him there for a while.

"Thanks." John shrugged indifferently. And she was gorgeous too. Dark hair and light eyes, John's favorite combination. "Don't you have a boyfriend?"

"No." Yes. Lo pursed her lips. She had a penchant for destruction. What did it matter anymore? She was waiting for him to break up with her, because she felt bad about being a terrible girlfriend, and he deserved the last word. She shrugged.

"That's not important." She broke eye contact from him. Her eyes skimmed the desolate courtyard, a small part of her subconsciously searching for Teddy. She glanced up at window and realized that if William chanced a look outside, he would see Dolly with another boy. "Don't you play the guitar or something?"

Dreyfus could choke on it.

It took one to know one. John stood vertically, hands peeking into the front pockets of his jeans as he narrowed his eyes at the girl. She certainly wanted to play a game. He grunted in response. He was weary of her friendliness, the sparkle in her eyes. John could see the reflection of the moon in her irises. She held the world in her hands, goddess of all realms. John blinked his eyes. Um, what?

"Yeah," He said, shrugging it off. "My dad's really good, and he taught me to play at a young age." It wasn't significant, even if Johnny was almost never seen without the instrument. Some people were just exceptional at expressing themselves. The last thing Johnny wanted to do about his skill was brag about it.

"Listen, I have to go work on a paper for Astronomy..." How could he tell her that he forgave her and didn't want things to be awkward? He didn't trust himself to speak, until he blurted: "Let's hang out together. Tomorrow, after breakfast." What the fuck Johnathan? He needed to get out of there before he changed his mind. He smiled at her before walking into the castle.
