Lis was sitting alone. It was nice out, she guessed and she'd chickened out of entering the Great Hall. So. She sat with a blueberry muffin in her lap and picked at it with a grim determination. Each bite made her feel a little sicker. Until she felt like she might as well just throw the damn thing against the nearest tree. What was wrong with her? Why couldn't she just be normal? She felt crushed under the weight of everything that was wrong. Normal people didn't sit by themselves in courtyards to cry. They found bathroom stalls or something, so that they could at least be anonymous in their sorrow. She couldn't even be sad right. "Lis!" Fuck. Robin, a childhood friend, practically another sister. The two had spent a lot of time together. Their fathers were in the same band. Lis's passion for drumming had her over at their house more frequently than she was at her own. The older Hufflepuff girl paused and pressed her lips together. Oh. "You're a hard chick to find these days, you know?" The girl continued after Lis had wiped at her eyes in annoyance. "Been preoccupied, I guess." Robin had been moving close but she stopped and sighed in frustration. "We haven't talked in months," The Hufflepuff had been trying to be friendly, to act like nothing was wrong but it hurt. "I thought we were friends, Lis." Robin said, her eyebrows knit together unhappily. "Why am I hearing about all of this shit about you in the hallways rather than from you." An arm flailed out dramatically. "Huh?" The older girl took a deep breath, because she wasn't calm at all and Lisbeth sat there, almost paralyzed. "I shouldn't have to beg you to tell me what's wrong!" Tears were streaming down the Slytherin's cheeks, dropping onto the skirt of her uniform. Her hands were clenched into fists, nails biting into her palms. She didn't want to be doing this right now. Not ever, probably. "I'm sorry," The girl spoke through the cracks in her voice. "I don't want to inconvenience anyone." It wasn't like no one else had asked if she was OK. Plenty of people had, but it had been so easy to brush their concern aside. Why. |

Robin's hands balled into fists. "That's really selfish," The older girl declared, too angry to be tactful, "And stupid." The Hufflepuff's gaze softened as the Slytherin started to choke on her tears. "Hell, Lis, you're just making it worse when you shove everyone away. Even if you don't think we can help at all, we can still be there for you." "I don't even know what's wrong!" Lisbeth choked out, hating every tear. She took deep breaths until she could continue without whinging through her own melancholy. "So it's not like it's going to magically get better." Apparently she also couldn't pretend like she was alright properly, but the girl had already known that. "I can't stand myself, everything's such a mess. I'd just really prefer keeping you all out of it." Was that it, then? Robin looked upset. "So we're not friends, then?" "I was never much of a friend anyway." "That's not your call to make!" Robin was so exasperated she could hardly even think straight. Walking away wasn't an option, somehow. "You know, you haven't always been a great person to be around but nobody is," Robin explained passionately, "We've known each other for years, Lis, and that's not something you can just forget about. It means something. I know it does. Even to you." "So if you ever pull your head out of your ass, you know where I'll be." And she stormed off. |

Billie found her way into the courtyard after she had finished her breakfast. It felt a strange coincidence to find the Slytherin girl after having talked about her not even a half hour ago. Providential, considering that she had wound up here by mistake. Her intent had been to exit the castle and head down to the greenhouses. Herbology was literally more effort than it was worth and the Professor really annoyed her. Lis was upset, though and Billie new herself well enough to realize she'd probably only make matters worse. The Slytherin pretty obviously tried to collect herself upon hearing someone enter, but didn't look up or invite conversation. Billie grimaced a little, would Herbology be worse? Fuck. "Check it, I thought I was lost but I guess class has been moved for the day?" Since two of them were here instead of there. So clever. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. The Slytherin looked up and did a pathetic job of looking amused. "Smart of the old broad, really. Stone is pretty hard to set on fire." Old broad meaning their Professor, who was pretty much the opposite of both these things. Old and broad, meaning. Although Billie wasn't picky. "There are still some plants though, set the right sort of Herbology-vibe. I'm surprised they haven't all retracted from you in horror." |

Lisbeth didn't even see Robin go through the tears clouding her vision. This wasn't what she'd wanted at all, but it was probably better that it happened this way. Instead of having the Hufflepuff girl get frustrated when all of her attempts at help and comfort were fruitless. It didn't feel any better, though. Lis thought it might, since she hadn't been spending time with Robin anyway. She just felt empty... eventually the tears stopped. She stayed seated, ignoring the numbness in her bottom. The Slytherin wasn't expecting anyone else to wander by. Regular students went to classes. Then again, Billie was far from regular. The Gryffindor seemed in a chatty mood and, eventually, won a bark of laughter from the Slytherin. "You're such an ass." "I think you're dealing with this fire chick business all wrong," The Gryffindor inserted, boldly, "People should be cowering in fear, I'm telling you." Vi had made her way closer to Lis, not deliberately or anything. "Not me, though. Not really the cowering sort." "Can't think of a single thing that would get you on your knees-- gross." Lis cringed at the implication. Brother, that's your brother. Fucking abort. |

Billie did a horrible job of containing her smirk. "I don't really consider that cowering." "Fucking stop," Lis demanded, unintentionally elongating the second word because of her laughter... and it felt sort of weird. Like she'd almost forgotten how. "If you really want to talk about kneeling, though," Billie continued, completely unfettered until the Slytherin clamped her hand over the Gryffindors mouth. It was surprisingly hard to stop, after she had started. It would probably be impossible if the Gryffindor was allowed to continue. Lis didn't speak for a long moment, just breathing. Billie didn't complain, though she could have easily removed herself from the other girl's grip. "I swear that I will end you." Vi grinned against Lis's hand, but the expression was gone by the time she pulled her hand away. "No fireworks?" The Gryffindor had the gall to sound disappointed. "If you're going to threaten someone you could at least given them some third degree burns. Let them know you're serious." Edited by Billie Baker, May 31 2014, 08:51:34 PM.

"Oh yea?" Lis challenged, fire flaring from her palm with such astonishing ease. Billie looked impressed by the display, but that was all lost on the fire snake. Lis'd never... Well, she had. But not like this. Any other time had been a dramatic channeling of anger. This was, it was something else. Lisbeth felt elated, and it was like nothing she had ever felt before. "Billie..." There really weren't words, though. The Gryffindor's eyebrows rose, but her mouth remained shut. At least momentarily, as the Slytherin looked happier than she had in weeks. Don't piss off the one that could call fire into her palms whenever she wanted. It seemed a good philosophy. At least for right then. That sat easier in her mind than wanting to see Lisbeth Elliot happy. Not that anyone was ever going to find out about this. Ever. Neither girl was particularly chatty in regards to such matters. "What are you going to do with that," Scoffed the Gryffindor, "Light a match?" "I'll light a fire under your ass, you great git." Lisbeth's eye narrowed, not without humour, "We'll see how long it takes you to cower." "And here I was, about to go to class..." |

Let's be real, there were about ten things the Gryffindor could easily list off as preferable to going into Herbology in her free period, because why would she ever take Arithmancy, to make up for shit grades. Before everything that had gone down, Lis had been going with her. Although that was pretty much the opposite of... productive. Lisbeth rolled her eyes, she had known the Gryffindor wouldn't actually take her seriously unless Lis tried to injure her. That was the thing about Billie, though, she seemed to not really mind getting injured. Lis didn't really get it at all. Billie wasn't human. "Is that why you sat down?" Lis countered, having been far too easily sucked into Billie's bullshitting. It was sort of nice at the same time. The Gryffindor hadn't treated her any differently, not since that first time she'd set an essay on fire and been given her sweater a few days later. "I just wanted to be near you." Vi responded, wiggling closer until Lis was shoving her away. "You're so cruel to me." The Gryffindor pouted unconvincingly as Lisbeth pressed her lips together to hide a smile. "Here, I think I've got some of Ryan's notes in Herbology. They'll be more useful to you than sitting in on classes anyway." Billie had trouble paying attention in classes, unless she was being allowed to fire magic at something. Lessons were always paced so slowly and she was a quick learner. "And just like that, the friskiness is gone." Lis hit the other girl in the chest with the papers she pulled out of her bag. Billie pulled her arms around herself, defensively. "What'd I do to you?" "We studying or not?" |
