Brooke had gotten rather bored during dinner and had decided to leave early, the amount of people around her made her slightly nervous for no reason. And she didn’t really like feeling nervous, especially in front of people she didn’t even know. Plus one of them seemed to be a bit of a bitch; Brooke didn’t want to be stuck around that negative energy. So she had ventured to the Courtyard to just sit down for a bit and do some studying. Opening up her book, Ivy decided that maybe she wasn’t too sure on the whole talking to people thing. It just seemed as though everyone was dull, or stuck in their own heads. It was easy to talk to them when she wanted to know something, but otherwise it grew tiresome and repetitive. And with recent dramatics and events within the school everyone was repeating the same things over and over. Something about darkness in the halls, something else about a kid being beat up. It didn’t interest Brooke in the slightest, she wanted to get out and explore places and learn new things. Opening her book, Brooke began to write down the people she had met today in her little black book. She did this every day, so onto a new page she write down Dexter’s initials as he was a given. And then the others names, a slight frown on her lips as she did so. What were their names? |

A third year stumbled backwards into the courtyard, prompted onward by the index finger of Percy Weasley, Head Boy. The third year's protests puffed out like he was losing air, each jab to the chest puncturing his argument. "It was a--oof--joke, mate! A--ouch--JOKE!" the curly-haired vandal insisted. He rubbed his fist over the sore spot the Head Boy had left on his sternum. Percy blinked, the argument obviously failing to compute. Joke? Percy scanned the carefully organized dictionary in his brain, thumbed to the appropriate tab, rolled his finger down to j... j-o... j-o-k... All that seemed to come up was a whited-out definition, next to it a picture of a dancing house-elf wearing a tea cozy. None of this made any logical sense to the seventh year and only served to fuel his fury. With one extra harsh thrust, Percy poked the third year over, sending him tumbling into the grass. "You would do well to monitor your language around me, you impudent peon," Percy spat, hovering over the youngster. "It was made my duty to supervise the well-being of those my junior, and I take any sort of jovial buffoonery as a threat." Percy pushed up his glasses until they jabbed at his eye sockets."You are dismissed for now," he relented, crossing his arms. "You laugh now, but rubber chicken wands have been known to peck out the occasional eye due to unscrupulous wand wavery!" Percy warned as the boy scrambled to his feet and took off. Percy ran a hand down the side of his face, pulling his skin into a distressed sag. He had much too much on his plate with the hooligans piling up as quickly as his essays. He willed the year would end so he could graduate on to bigger and better things. Besides, if he wanted to be Minister of Magic before twenty-five, he was going to need to start campaigning now. A glimpse of red across the way made him rethink. Well, he wasn't looking forward to leaving everything behind. His lips turned up with just the slightest curve. He stopped in front of the girl, tangles of red hair obscuring whatever book she was immersed in on her lap. Percy cleared his throat, his face blooming pink as he tried to find socially acceptable words. "You look quite pulchritudinous when you are studying." |

Above her, Brooke heard someone barking out orders and questions. But she didn’t bother to look up, instead she focused on her book and tried to allow some of the information to soak into her brain. However someone cleared their throat above her, forcing her to look up and see who it was. A smirk slid onto Ivy’s lips as she saw Percy Weasley stood there, yet again using big words which no normal human being would. “And you seem to be rather vociferous.” Brooke raised her eyebrows, licking her finger and swiping it across to page to turn to another. She looked down to her book and stuck her pencil behind her ear. A sudden thought entered her brain, she quickly closed her book and leant back against the tree. “What do you think of a Gryffindor called Dexter Ryan?” |

Percy tried to drain the redness from his cheeks, but the utterance of Brooke's multi-syllabic comeback had left him weak at the knees. Good gravy, that girl possessed the hottest of internal lexicons. "I apologize for disturbing you with my impetuous clamor," Percy said sincerely. "I will do my utmost to atone for my boorish behavior hereafter." Percy seated himself next to Brooke as he considered her question. Dexter Ryan... Percy sifted through his mental list of detention slips but came up short. At least he hadn't received any demerits at the hands of the Head Boy. "He keeps to himself, mostly," Percy shrugged stiffly. The more Percy thought about it, the more it became suspect. Obviously this shadow of a boy in his House had slipped under the radar and was a covert distributor of joke products and other slackery. "I would advise you to keep away from him until further information can be obtained," Percy said, internally closing Dexter's file in his brain like a secret agent. "Why are you so inclined to know?" |

Brooke let out a small laugh, shaking her head and closing her book. Percy was fun to speak to, even if he did try to use the biggest words available to him. It kept her mind working during the conversation and made her listen harder to what he was saying. “It’s fine Perc” Ivy said with a smirk, a weird nickname for a weird guy. It fitted, but she didn’t expect the boy in front of her to agree. Hearing what he said about Dexter made her shrug, keeping away from him eh? “Oh, he’s just my boyfriend.” Brooke stretched her legs out and pressed her fingers to the ground. “He is a pretty nice guy.” Ivy said with a smile, he made her happy and that was what really mattered right? Brooke put her books in a pile next to her and crossed her legs trying to get into a comfortable position. “What is your post tonight then?” |

Just: 1. adverb, meaning merely or only. 2. adverb, meaning guided by truth, reason, justice, or fairness. Percy was almost compelled to pull out his pocket dictionary to double-check the definition of the word. Brooke was certainly using the word in an incorrect context. How could this Dexter character be merely her boyfriend when the thought created a lump in his otherwise verbose esophagus? The idea certainly was not reasonable or just, and it certainly wasn't fair. He could only hope it was not the truth. Percy felt his shoulders begin to slump and quickly yanked them back into attention. Brooke's naive smile was causing a stir in his stomach that he'd only ever experienced when reciting the footnotes of his favorite bibliography. Although this time someone had checked out the book he'd wanted. "Oh no, wait one moment, Miss Isley," Percy said, his brain working feverishly, "Dexter Ryan... wasn't he the one to arrive late to his Arithmancy class last November?" Percy nodded, as if trying to convince himself. "Yes, I'm almost certain of it!" Percy smacked the bench in his distress, "Tardiness is inexcusable. You must keep your distance from that one. A bad egg, indeed!" |

Brooke turned to look up at Percy and rose her eyebrow at the boy who suddenly told her to wait a moment. But then when he gave a reason to why she should stay away Ivy couldn’t help but start laughing at him. She leant back against the tree and shook her head at the boy in front of her. “Are you jealous?” She grinned, shoving her feet out in front of her and pushing a hand through her hair before she let out another laugh. “He’s really nice; otherwise I wouldn’t be dating him.” Brooke began to reorganise her books into a neater pile, as she did so she asked him another question. “What would you say if I told you I was late to class last month?” |
