A loud bang shook the room right to its core, Grace grabbed onto one of the trophy cases as she tried to keep her balance. There had already been a ghost covered in a sheet of blood, its skin was hanging off its see-through skeleton. It was more than confusing to see, Grace had reached out to grab the monster but her fingers slipped right through it. It had laughed and flew up into the ceiling, was it trying to scare her? Grace had scoffed at the whole thing, that ghost couldn’t hurt her.

It had been a few minutes since that had happened, and now the ground was shaking because something else was happening. When the floor finally stopped Grace stormed over to the window. She smashed her elbow against the glass but nothing happened, it didn’t break. Her eyes flickered to watch what was happening outside, that was when she noticed the grounds were flooded. None of this made sense. She had been the only one to come into the room, she had even locked the door and ignored the rattling of the handle when students rushed by.

Other than the first fleshy ghost the room had been quiet. Empty even. A scream jolted Grace from the spot; she turned to look at the door as another scream shot into the room. It was familiar. Grace hesitated for a moment as the door rattled. “Fuck.” Grace spat storming over to the door and pulling the lock off. She felt obliged to go and help whoever was out there, she couldn’t ignore two screams. Grace yanked open the door and looked out into the dull corridor. Nothing. Grace slammed the door shut and began to walk away from it. Whoever it was would probably be back.

And they say, "You're a liability. You're a little much for me."

Julianna sprinted down the hallway near the trophy room at a breakneck pace.

"Someone help me!" the dark-haired girl called as she flicked her wand around recklessly. She would gladly curse anyone that came near, but it seemed that Death only sought to play with her, sending illusions and puffs of black smoke that would disappear as soon as Julianna set her eyes on them. She wanted nothing more than to get down to the dungeons to find her father, but the sudden visit of Death during the daytime pushed the girl into a panic. Julianna had run through the corridor for what felt like an eternity, and still she had not made any progress in getting to the stairs.

"Hello!? Is anyone there? Answer me!" she screamed this time in a demanding tone, as if that would help. The tip of Julianna's wand was dimly lit, and the halls were filled with a black fog that clouded her vision so much that she did not notice the large door beside her.

Another yell, Grace turned back around to the door and pulled out her wand for precaution. The girl was yelling from outside the corridor. Grace quickly darted over to the door and grabbed onto the handle. Then she paused, what if it was the ghost again? Her fingers trembled on the handle and she let out a small breath. Her eyes were focused on the door and the coldness of the brass began to dull around her fingers. “I’m opening the door but if any spells are fired my way I am locking this up.” Grace yelled out firmly, she waited for a few seconds before slowly opening the door and looking out to see who was there.

Julianna, a sixth year. Grace had listened to many students speak about her with fear in their voices. The girl was high up apparently, some type of pureblood person. Grace knew of the supposed great houses but she never had the desire to go and read up on them. She doubted they expected her to know who they were, she was from a family of muggles after all. “Are you coming in?”

"Just open the door you fool!" Julianna squealed as she heard the locking mechanism moving from the other side. A kind-looking fourth year girl poked her face out of the room as if nothing was going on. Julianna vaguely recognized the girl as one of her housemates.

"Yes! Move it!" Julianna commanded as she pushed her way into the room. She immediately turned on the spot and slammed the door shut, then fumbled with the lock. A brief feeling of relief came over her as she leaned her back against the door as if to hold it shut from intruders. She stood up at her full height after a few deep breaths.

"Why the hell is this happening right now?" Julianna asked no one in particular, hardly paying attention to the room's only other inhabitant. Her confusion, of course, stemmed from the fact that Death only came to the castle at night before today. Julianna picked at her nails nervously as she wondered if her father would be safe behind Dumbledore's protective charms.

As Grace pulled the door open she felt her mouth fall into a frown, it wasn’t a surprise that the girl was being so rude to her. Most of the girls were, and the boys. Most of her own house anyhow, they all stuck up for one another but had no problem with sneaking a knife out of the kitchen and stabbing it into another’s back. Grace stepped back when the girl began to fumble with the lock, she watched for a few moments before turning back around the heading to the window. She wanted to see what else was happening out there.

Julianna was breathless, she yelled asking what was happening but Grace just shrugged. It was instinct to do so. Grace got to the window and looked out of it again. “Look at what is happening out here.” She called out. What time was it? Was it around lunch time or had this been going on longer than that? Grace felt her stomach rumble; she scowled and turned around to Julianna. Maybe she should mention the fleshy ghost that was slipping in and out of the room.

“I’d watch out for the ghosts as well. Fleshy boy has been slipping in and out of here.” Grace said pointing up to the ceiling and then spinning to look at a trophy case. It was shaking, and then… BAM! The case cracked in on itself, pieces of sharp glass shooting out around the room. Grace slipped back to the wall but felt a small piece shoot across her nose, it stung. She turned to look at Julianna. “And the exploding cases.”

Julianna raised an eyebrow at the girl, but did not speak as she stepped forward to peer out the window. The grounds were covered in a thick, black mist, and the sky was completely dark. Julianna looked around for some indication of the time, but found nothing. Where was the sun?

"Ghosts? What ghosts?" Julianna echoed back. Her eyes instinctively darted up toward the ceiling and scanned the hard stone for any sign of the ethereal appendages of a ghost. She held her wand up to better light the room, but the vibration coming from a nearby cabinet soon attracted her attention.

"Wh—?" Julianna began to ask as one of the trophy cases imploded onto itself, sending shards of glass spewing across the room. She raised her hands to shield her face, feeling a few pieces of glass as they cut across the cloth on her arms. She looked at Grace, noticing a small incision across the bridge of her nose.

"You're bleeding," Julianna informed Grace as a small globule of blood formulated on the tip of her nose. Julianna carefully shook herself off, sending a few small crystals tumbling to the ground; they crunched under her feet as she stepped forward. "Are you alright?" Julianna asked rather uncharacteristically. The last thing she wanted was to be responsible for this poor girl if she actually had caught any larger pieces of glass in her skin, but she asked all the same. She just wasn't sure why.

“A flesh man ghost.” Grace plainly said pushing her hair up from her face as she looked out of the window. After she had made the statement the cabinet had burst and now she was stood in shock with her eyes wide and her fingers curled into a fist. She brushed the tiny pieces of glass off her robes and looked over to where Julianna was, it seemed a lot of the glass had gotten stuck in the girl’s hair. That figures.

Grace stared at Julianna reaching her fingers up to her nose and dabbing it lightly. She glanced down to her hand and noticed there was a smidge of blood on it. Her nose suddenly began to sting, she frowned. “I am.” She quickly said moving her hand up to her nose and rubbing it; she ignored the stinging and tried to keep her face from scrunching up. “I’m fine.” Grace said waving her hand away and turning to look at the other cases around them. It wasn’t safe in here, but it wasn’t safe out there. She walked over to the broken case and picked up a sharp shard of class.

“We could stay in here and risk this going in our throats or we can move someplace else.” Another scream could be heard through the corridors, but Grace didn’t look away from Julianna. She would have preferred to stay in the room, and she had a plan of her own. But did Julianna want to stay?

Julianna shook her head slightly and carefully removed a few pieces of glass from her long, curled hair as Grace spoke. "You don't look fine," Julianna commented as she ran her fingertips through her mane, cautiously feeling for any remaining shards of glass. She pulled a compact mirror from her pocket and snapped it open to inspect her face for any lesions. Pleased that she hadn't caught any of the glass herself, Julianna offered it to Grace without a word. The mirror was one of Julianna's most prized possessions, as it was one of the first gifts that she had received from her mother during her first Christmas at the Bauer estate. It was heart-shaped and constructed from a smoky, ornate type of metal that was soft to the skin. Julianna couldn't help but wonder why she felt like being so nice all of a sudden.

"I need to...," Julianna began to explain, but she cut herself off. She couldn't reveal the fact that she wanted to get down to the dungeons to find her father, but then again, it shouldn't be weird to Grace that she'd want to return to the common room. "We should try to get down to the dungeons and hide out in the common room," Julianna suggested. If she got there, slipping off to the hidden shrine would be easy.

Grace shrugged; she felt fine so that was really all that mattered in her own mind. She didn’t think people would be running around worrying about their hair at a time like this. Grace began to turn on the spot, checking the corners of the rooms for any unusual activities. More exploding cases and not-so-friendly ghosts wouldn’t be ideal right now. Trying to come up with a good plan was hard enough without those things dancing in and out freely. Her head snapped to look at Julianna who was now offering a mirror out to her. Grace slowly took it from her fingers and examined her nose.

There was a small cut right in the middle which was a bright red shade, there seemed to be some dirt of her face as well. Must have been from the dust that was in the cabinets. She closed the mirror and handed it back without a word. When Julianna mentioned the common room Grace nodded, that could be a good idea. Going down there may not have as many people, but at the same time it could have more ghosts. It was darker down there with no windows and even the light of a wand wouldn’t help that much. “We could get trapped down there though, nowhere to escape if things go to shit.” Grace said leaning down to the ground and picking up a trophy which seemed to be for good attendance.

She loudly scoffed standing back up, her fingers still gripped around the trophy. “What did you see when you were in the corridor?”

Julianna watched as Grace inspected her face with her mirror. She maintained her gaze to make sure that Grace did not drop the valuable accessory, but soon found herself distracted by the otherwise flawless qualities of the girl's face. Even with the slight cut on the girl's nose, Julianna couldn't help but notice the smoothness of the girl's skin, and how her light blue, almost grey eyes fit her face so well.

Julianna smiled awkwardly and felt her face burning slightly when Grace returned the mirror without a word. The two girls' fingers touched for a moment during the exchange, and Julianna almost let the mirror slip from her grasp as a fluttering feeling erupted in her stomach. Why was this previously unassuming girl suddenly having such an effect on Julianna? She had no idea.

"I don't think escape is an option no matter where we go," Julianna explained. She knew all too well that there was no escaping from Death, as it had made that much clear through its actions so far. "I ran down the corridor for what felt like ten minutes and didn't get anywhere," Julianna explained. It seemed that Death had different plans for her, and just the simple idea that she was not in control of her own actions made her feel both anger and fear.

"Watch this," Julianna attempted to get Grace's attention as she leaned down and picked up a broken piece of one of the displays from the floor. Instinctively, Julianna looked over her shoulder to make sure that no one was watching, but she quickly remembered that she and Grace were alone. With the hard piece of stone in one hand, Julianna raised her wand and unlocked one of the room's windows. She stepped forward and leaned on the window sill. The air around the castle's exterior was cold and completely motionless, as if time itself had stopped. Looking down, Julianna noted that she could not see the ground or any of the other structures that should have been in view.

"Listen," Julianna instructed, and she tossed the chunk through the portal as hard as she could. The grey piece of stone material soared through the air without a sound and fell into the darkness. Julianna craned her neck forward, pointing her ear toward the window. Nothing. No sound of the stone hitting the ground, no echo, nothing. They were already trapped whether or not Grace knew it.

Grace raised an eyebrow when Julianna mentioned that there was probably no escape possible. She stood still for a few moments scratching the side of her arm and moving to follow where Julianna was walking. “What do you mean?” She didn’t really understand what was going on, which was a main flaw in her attempt to make a plan. How could they decide where to go or what to do when they had no idea what was going on? Grace followed Julianna to the window following the broken piece which the girl had picked up.

Grace stood in the same spot, watching as the window was unlocked and as Julianna leant out. She felt compelled to warm the girl not to lean out too far, she could imagine someone running up behind her and pushing her out. She had heard snarky remarks from many different students about the Black sisters. Even the one who seemed pretty nice, but Grace wasn’t sure of their relation. Maybe she wasn’t their sister, but she was older. Grace never saw the point in keeping up with the pureblood families and how highly they held themselves, being born into a muggle family and all. Any yells of ‘who do you think I am’ fell on deaf ears. She watched as Julianna chucked a piece out of the window, Grace rushed over to the window and looked out.

No noise, no nothing. It seemed to just fly away into the dark mist that lay beyond the castle. Grace didn’t understand, a sudden thought of her parents being excited by this development made Grace turn away from the window. “So… time isn’t moving? Or something like that?” It sounded stupid to say aloud but that was what Grace got from this experiment. They couldn’t escape; they’d probably roll into darkness and never resurface. Silence fell on the room, and then there was a creaking type noise accompanied by the sound of rock falling on the floor. Grace looked around. “What was…”

Bang.

Grace almost jumped out of the window when a crashing noise filled the room. Dust slipped from the ceiling above them but other than that the room looked fine. Grace turned to the door. “Something is happening out there.”

Follow the pale moonlight.

Brooklyn hardly had any time to react as she crashed down through the ceiling into a corridor on the third floor. Pieces of wood and stone peppered the area around the heap that was Brooklyn, who had fallen through the muggle studies floor while sitting at her desk. The desktop shattered into a multitude of small splinters, while other material had been bent and contorted into a variety of awkward shapes.

"Ow...," was the only word that Brooklyn could manage. She opened her eyes as the dust began to settle, feeling sufficiently discombobulated after hitting her head during the fall. If the corridor wasn't completely black, she might have seen the room spinning around her.

"Hello?" Brooklyn called out as she forced herself onto her hands and knees. She winced as her arms objected to the weight being put on them, as it seemed that her wrists and hands had instinctively attempted to cushion her fall. She took a deep breath and rolled over into a sitting position.

"Is anyone there? Professor?" Brooklyn yelled. She look up to see if she could spot the hole in the ceiling. Surely she would see her classmates looking down at her, but she saw nothing but darkness. How was it possible that she had ended up in the middle of the corridor if she fell through the classroom floor? It should have been above a classroom on the third floor, or at least she assumed, and yet here she was in the middle of a dark corridor that she didn't recognize.

In an instant, the silence of the corridor was haunted by a malevolent growl. The sound seemed to molest Brooklyn's senses, sending a terrifying shiver ripping through her entire body. Without thinking, Brooklyn bared her teeth, which had now elongated to their full length, and her eyes began to glow. Her vampiric instincts were beginning to take over.

how many secrets can you keep?

Victor had been heading towards the Great Hall when a wolfs howl caught his attention, he turned to look at where the noise could be coming from but when he turned back there was only darkness in front of him. It was as though he was in Knockturn alley in the middle of the night, distant cackles and screams bounced back and forth against the walls. Victor turned around to rush in another direction but there was only more darkness. The walls had begun to peel around him and Victor pulled out his wand and shot a spell into the mist.

He heard a grunt once the spell split through the darkness, so Victor lit up his wand and ventured into the fog hoping that he hadn’t hit another student. But it was as though he had been walking for hours on end, no other sound or monsters had slipped through the fog. He had hoped that he was heading in the correct direction, but then there was a sudden dip in the floor sending Victor falling down a slope. As though it was a slide.

He landed in a big heap in another corridor, his face smacked against floorboards and his cheek filled with pain and burning. Victor pulled himself up and began to cough as dust filled his lungs. But then there was sound, a loud crash made Victor look up to see what was in front of him. He saw a girl falling to the ground. Victor pulled himself up and rushed over, that was when he noticed who it was. “Brooklyn, are you alright?” He coughed out as he appeared from the shadows.

Grace was staring at the door when she heard a small voice call out, it sounded surprisingly familiar. And then after a few moments passed another voice spoke out, Grace turned to look at Julianna and waited to see what the girl would say. But when nothing came Grace began to walk over to the door. “If you want to get to the dungeons we can head out now, but either way I’m going to see who they are.” Grace pointed towards the door but didn’t look back to Julianna.

Grace had let the girl come into the room when she was calling for help, any objections would be kind of hypocritical so Grace chose to ignore it while she began to unlock the door. “We’re here.” She spoke out firmly and loudly.

"Wait!" Julianna opened her mouth to say, but Grace had already opened the door and poked her head outside. It wouldn't be fair for the girls to lock people out of the relative safety of the trophy room, especially as Grace had let Julianna in just moments ago. It was the self-preservation of the Kahn gene that made Julianna uneasy about opening the door, but Grace didn't seem to think twice about it. A slight feeling of guilt fluttered through Julianna, but she ignored it.

"Who's there?" Julianna whispered as she stepped forward. Grace seemed to be exactly the same height as her, which was odd, as Julianna was much older than most of the other students, so she moved behind the girl to see around her shoulder. The calm fragrance of Grace's hair tickled Julianna's nostrils, and she felt herself pausing for a moment to enjoy the sensation before leaning out of the room.

"Oh, it's just vampire girl and—" Julianna squinted "—Victor? Is that you?" she said as she quickly pushed past Grace, being careful not to run into the girl. Even subconsciously, it seemed that Julianna desired to treat the girl as delicately as possible, but she had no idea why.

"It is you!" Julianna announced, her voice sounding somewhat angry and demanding. She and Victor had, of course, attended the Lestrange wedding together, but the boy had proved to be about as interesting as a garden gnome.

"What the hell is going on? Why haven't the professors and prefects done anything yet? This is outrageous!" Julianna launched into a sudden tirade. She was fully aware that Victor had no control over what was going on, but having someone to yell at and blame would make her feel more at ease.

Victor looked up to the door and pointed his wand at it, but a small voice seemed to slip through and Victor relaxed his body. It was a Slytherin girl, and Julianna? Victor stepped back as the girl stormed towards him, he raised his hands in a mock surrender as she stormed towards him with questions and anger. “How am I meant to know what is going on?” Victor spat back with his eyes narrowed, he didn’t like being blamed for things he couldn’t control. Or being yelled at for no reason. “The school doesn’t tell us prefects shit.” Victor hissed lowering his arms and then turning to look at the darkness around them.

All he got from Dumbledore was the occasional praise along with the other prefects. Even the other professors didn’t seem to tell him much, but his brother had revealed that they didn’t even know what was going on around here. “Did you hear the announcement? Yaxley’s dad has called everyone to the hall because apparently it’s safe.” Victor scoffed. He turned to look between Brooklyn and Grace before letting himself sigh.

“Where do we go? This room is safe but the dungeons might be more familiar.” Grace said firmly as she looked at the three of them. Her eyes were narrowed, her parents would be having a field day if they were here right now.

Follow the pale moonlight.

Suddenly started by the sound of a male voice, Brooklyn's body remained tense, and instinctively raised her fingernails to fight off any would-be attackers. She relaxed once she realized that the voice was laced with concern, especially as the boy had used her name.

"Oh!" Brooklyn exclaimed when one of the Hufflepuff prefects appeared in the black fog. Her eyes widened as she realized that her teeth were still protruding, and she quickly reached up to cover her mouth, but she was unable to hide the fact that her eyes were still glowing blue. "I'm okay," Brooklyn confirmed rather modestly as she dusted herself off. Her hands and wrists were numb, but nothing felt broken, and she would eventually regenerate if she had been injured.

Brooklyn suddenly felt herself feeling more self-conscious when Julianna and Grace appeared from behind a nearby door. Julianna jumped on the opportunity to bring up Brooklyn's condition, but seemed to be focused on arguing with Victor. As he argued back, Brooklyn's fellow fourth year spoke up.

"Shouldn't we go to the Great Hall then?" Brooklyn suggested. If the professors gave the order for the students to get to the Great Hall then they would be best off going there as quickly as they could, but Brooklyn was not one to insist.

Grace pondered on the idea of going to the great hall, if it was meant to be safe then maybe that would be their best bet. It was still a few floors down though and judging by the state of the hole above them there was a chance that they could end up just about anywhere in this castle. Grace looked between the three and shook her head. The great hall could be alright but most of the people in there didn’t seem trustworthy. Then again to Grace no one really seemed trustworthy. It was just a stupid part of her brain which put up a wall whenever someone was asking for trust or anything which could result in more upset and pain. She blamed her family for it, who else was there to blame? “Who are the Yaxleys?” Grace asked looking between Julianna and Victor. One of those two had to know.

“I don’t know… If they say it’s safe then it’s probably anything but.” Grace scoffed slightly. “But nowhere else in the castle has been called safe so…” Grace shrugged. She would prefer to stay in this trophy room but she would probably go along with whatever the other three decided.

And they say, "You're a liability. You're a little much for me."

Julianna scowled at Victor. She didn't like the tone he had taken with her. "Useless. Why do they even keep you around?" she insulted the boy. Julianna's words were rather tame compared to the venom that she usually spat, likely due to the fact that she was attempting to be on good behaviour in front of Grace. She still didn't know why.

Yaxley. A name of meagre importance compared to the Blacks. Julianna snorted audibly. "You mean the auror? You're kidding, right?" she inquired with an incredulous laugh. "The aurors have been proven to be unable to take care of even themselves. What makes you think we'll be safe under their 'protection'?" Julianna continued. The only reason that Auror Yaxley was still alive was due to Jordanna's good graces, nothing more. Julianna's mother chose who lived and died, and ministry filth especially, even the purebloods, were at her mercy as well.

"Grace is right," Julianna announced, taking the opportunity to let her housemate know that she was on her side. "We should stay put until we know what's really going on. Chances are if we go running down the corridors together we'll end up being split apart anyway."

Follow the pale moonlight.

Brooklyn listened intently, and as she began to calm herself, the bluish glow of her eyes began to fade. She wasn't one to interrupt, especially the likes of Julianna, who was well-known as a bully. Instead, she took the opportunity to agree with the girl.

"That's right," Brooklyn said quietly. She had been caught in the corridors on the night of the first happening, and had learned very quickly that the black fog had a mind of its own, as running through it often lead one in circles. They would be stuck as long as the malevolent force around the school wanted to keep them there. "We're more likely to get separated than we are to make it to the Great Hall. Whatever this is... we're only going to be allowed to go where it wants us to go," she explained with a shudder. It was odd trying to personify the... thing... whatever it was. Brooklyn felt a bit of paranoia itching in her brain, as if to tell her that, by naming the malevolent force, it would become stronger.

"What went on in here, then?" Brooklyn asked with a genuine curiosity in her voice when she entered the trophy room. It looked like an explosion had gone off, sending glass and debris in all directions.

HIRP now has a Common Knowledge, Recent Events, and Rumours thread, which contains all the information that your characters should know having grown up in our world. Please be sure to check it out and feel free to use the knowledge in character. If you have suggestions for minor characters who might be well known, please contact a staff member.
