dead girl walking

It was the last day of school, the last day of Amelia’s sixth year and one which seemed to pass by pretty quickly. Breakfast was already over and she had seen a few students get upset over not being able to see their friends for two months. Amelia didn’t see the big deal in it; even if her family didn’t allow her to visit friends it wouldn’t be that long. She would probably be more upset about graduating as a whole, but that was a year away. She didn’t need to think about that right now, so she didn’t. Instead Amelia walked towards the courtyard waiting for her cousin to come down from their common room. Penny had said that she would be a little while longer and Amelia got bored waiting around so she went off to wonder around the almost empty castle.

Somehow she had ended up at the courtyard. Amelia stood in her normal clothes with a beanie hat on which didn’t seem to fit the warm weather, however her strappy top with dark green leggings did. She stood at the bottom of the tree and looked out to where the students were walking from; most of them were running down the steps and heading out the castle with bags and suitcases following. Most of the time students would take down their own suitcases at the end of the year to make it easier when they got off the train in London. The carriages outside waited for students to fill them with bags being taken down with them. She noticed a few first years standing around, unsure of where to go or what to do. A professor quickly appeared and ushered them out of the castle, soon it would be practically empty.

As Amelia was waiting for her cousin another girl walked over. Amelia watched her closely raising an eyebrow at her and turning to face her. Amelia was never someone who would keep to herself, not when someone she hadn’t seen before appeared next to her, and especially when they were wearing obvious muggle clothing. “Hey, you know where you’re going?”

Grace had finished packing up her belongings and was now on her way out of Hogwarts, except something stopped her from walking out the doors. Instead she changed direction and hoped to get to the courtyard and see no one else there, but that wasn’t the case. A girl who she had seen speaking to Julianna was stood under the tree and the second Grace stopped walking she addressed her. Grace turned to look at her, expression not changing in the slightest. She then slowly shook her head and turned to where the other students were.

“No. I wanted to come here.” Grace said fluffing up her hair and wondering whether she wanted to go home at all. The fact she couldn’t just freely walk out the building said a lot. Grace shuffled on the spot and scratched the side of her arm, what Lis has said about not having blood tests taken made Grace more nervous than she liked to let on. “Why are you here?” Grace quickly asked hoping that whoever the girl was would give a good enough answer to make her think of something else.

She just didn’t want to focus on the needles she’d be facing when she got home. Maybe she needed to really ask her parents why they always did tests on her, and she would not accept their occupation as a reasonable answer.

Amelia watched the blonde girl closely as she has a weird feeling about her, something which Amelia couldn’t really pin point. Maybe it was just her attitude, she didn’t seem like the friendliest person but that wasn’t much of a surprise. If you weren’t friendly you were either defensive or an asshole. “Waiting for my cousin.” Amelia chipped back raising her eyebrow at the girl and then turning to where all the other students were walking. They ran into one another and seemed to be falling about giddily, whether it was with excitement or sadness was not clear. Or they could have just drunk the remains of their liquor that was stashed in the dorms.

Either way they looked like fools. Amelia scoffed at them and leant back on the tree behind her. There was a silence between Grace and Amelia, but it wasn’t that awkward. It was just as though they were waiting for different people or something. “You look familiar.” Amelia dully stated feeling the need to make conversation, the silence as comfortable enough to start a conversation. Well in Amelia’s mind it was.

“What house are you in?” Amelia asked again hoping that more than one question would actually start a conversation. It was more interesting talking to some random kid compared to standing in silence.

Grace was happy that there was calm air around the courtyard, it wasn’t awkward and she wasn’t being called a failure or a dirty stinkin’ mudblood. Her eyes flickered back over to the girl; she paused for a few moments as the girls face suddenly felt familiar. Wasn’t she a Weasley? Grace had heard one or two people say that she was as bad as a Weasley. Although she never really understood what that meant and didn’t feel the need to ask, but now she wanted to know. This girl didn’t seem too bad, especially if she was a Weasley. Grace made a mental note to ask Julianna or Lis what that meant the next time she saw them, which would at the Quidditch world cup. Grace hummed to herself and decided that maybe she wouldn’t be so nasty right now.

“Slytherin, are you a Weasley?” Grace just wanted to be blunt about it, but she had heard that Weasley kids had bright ginger hair and freckles. The older girl seemed to have the freckles but her hair was pretty dark. Unsure what to think Grace just turned to look out from the courtyard. She wondered whether it would be best to just move along, but she wasn’t becoming impatient about the conversation. That was always a good thing.

“Yeah, I’m a Weasley.” Amelia bluntly said raising an eyebrow at the younger girl and turning to look at her directly. A Slytherin kid of course, Amelia would have guessed a Ravenclaw but sometimes the houses would mesh together and blend. Their reactions and attitudes could sometimes be the same, but she could say the same about someone like Ezra. As much as she hated to admit it, and she hated even thinking about that stuck up bratty piece of shit, but the two of them had very similar reactions in one sense. Both would blow up without a second thought in defence or with insults some of the time. It was one of the ways which the houses meshed together, and probably one of the main reasons why the Gryffindors and Slytherins clashed so much.

Amelia looked at Grace waiting to hear what else to say, but by the looks of her clothing it seemed like she wasn’t a pureblood person. Amelia had seen the pureblood stuck up pricks when they were at their best, and she’d heard about the ridiculous and over the top outfits from Dave Jr. “You got a problem with that?” Amelia asked keeping her eyes on the girl. “No, why would I?” The girl instantly snapped back turning to meet her eyes.

At least she was somewhat sharp, and not directly calling her a pig or some pathetic insult. “You aint a pureblood, are you?” Amelia asked with a small chuckle.

Grace looked at Amelia and waited to hear why she would have a problem with the girls surname, but she didn’t get an answer. Instead she was asked another question. Grace raised both her eyebrows and let out a long side before leaning back and sitting down on her suitcase. She pushed her elbows onto her knees and the rested her head in the palm of her hands. She tapped her finger on the side of her face. “No, I’m the furthest from that.” Grace announced freely, it wasn’t anything to be ashamed of. It never would be.

Being born into a muggle world made you smarter, in Grace’s opinion anyway. It meant that you got to experience two different worlds and that you got to fully embrace one before being thrown into another. But maybe she wished that her experiences as a muggle were a little more normal. “Muggleborn?” Amelia asked, and Grace just nodded in response.

“My parents are scientists. They freaked out about it…” Grace quietly admitted, she wasn’t usually the type of person to speak about herself but something in this instance pushed her to. Maybe she was finally starting to notice the thudding in her head which begged her to speak about these sorts of things. One little piece of information about her life wasn’t a big give away or anything. Grace just preferred to not speak about herself until she was asked outright, which she never actually was. But after all this thinking and with no one to throw the thoughts at… Her head just hurt.

It made sense how Grace wasn’t snubbing her, although she was in Slytherin she wasn’t one of them. Amelia almost felt sorry for her in a way, from the stories she had heard from her mother there was no doubting that Grace probably had a bad time in that house. Although not as many people care about blood now as they did before it would have still been hard to be thrown into such a traditional Hogwarts house. Amelia wondered why the sorting hat would put her there. Grace revealed her parents occupations and Amelia’s eyes widened.

“Scientists? Bet that came as a shock then.” Amelia almost laughed; she wondered what these people reacted like. It would have been funny to watch. “Are they interested in magic then? I mean… They have to be.” Amelia reasoned with herself as she asked Grace more about her parents. It was interesting, and now Amelia didn’t mind having to wait for Penny.

Grace nodded as Amelia let out a small laugh; her parents were shocked in a good way though. It was a way which Grace didn’t understand, but after that day they paid a lot more attention to her. Maybe that was why her sister got angry and lashed out, although that behaviour had started before Grace had even got her letter. She ended up putting the behaviour down to her just being a horrible person, but there could have been something more there. “Interested in an understatement.” Grace admitted, she looked to her arm and saw the scars and pin marks that seemed to create little craters in her skin.

Grace openly sighed and looked up to where Amelia was stood. “You know, the usual injections and whatever.” Grace took a risk with that statement and she was unsure about what the response would be like. But the words had just fallen out of her mouth and Grace could hardly even think about what she had said until her lips were shut and her eyes were facing forward. Everything paused for a moment as it seemed like Amelia wasn’t even going to respond, time dragged as she waited for an answer. Grace was waiting for a confirmation about her life, it was either perfectly normal or unusually abnormal.

Amelia had to wait a few seconds before she allowed herself to open her big gob and speak. “Usual? Injections?” All Amelia could do was question what Grace had said, the first thought that had popped into her mind wasn’t something which was helpful to say in the situation. Amelia let another silence fill the air as she thought back to her childhood. Her mother had taken her to the doctors to get some stupid injection done to stop some muggle diseases, the only reason Amelia could even remember that was the fact she got a bright green lollipop straight after. But that was the only time she could remember having a needle in her arm, it wasn’t something which she commonly thought about.

“I think I’ve only ever had one inject before, and I don’t think I’ve seen my mom have one.” Amelia said aloud. “And she’s was born into a muggle family.” Amelia didn’t feel good about what she was saying, although it was the truth she felt slightly worried that something had been happening to this girl. Maybe it was something to do with her parents being scientists; Amelia had to wonder what they had been doing to her. She wanted to ask why Grace thought it was normal but that felt as though she was getting a bit too personal, after all she had only just met the younger girl.

Amelia looked up to the nearby stair case and grinned as she saw Penny jumping down. Amelia waved over to her and picked up her bags ready to walk off to her cousin. But then she paused and turned to look at Grace. “You wanna come down to the train with me?” Amelia wanted to find out more about the girl, but she also wanted to get home and sleep in for the next two months.

Grace had felt her stomach plummet to the floor when Amelia questioned what she actually meant by ‘injections’. She gulped back whatever was rising in her throat and bit the inside of her cheeks as Amelia said she hadn’t had more than one injection. What made it worse was that Amelia also said she had never seen her mother have an injection, and her mother was from a muggle family. Just like Grace was. Grace leant back and moved her hands so her palms pressed against her knees. It was a realisation which brought on so many questions; Grace didn’t know where to start.

So when Amelia invited her to come down to the train all Grace could do was shake her head. Amelia seemed to linger for a moment before shrugging and walking off into the crowd. Grace was left alone and she didn’t even realise how much time had passed. Her mind was spinning and all the unanswered questions were weighing her down to the ground. She stayed seated for another twenty minutes. When she looked back up she noticed there weren’t as many students as before.

Grace pulled herself up and grabbed her bag dragging it towards the doors. She blended in with a few students as the confusion and upset settled on her facial features. As she walked out of Hogwarts only one question stuck in her mind.

How was she going to ask her parents about this?
