If you don't stand for something, you might fall for anything.

Lis sat outside of one of the councillor's offices, thin arms draped tightly around her knees. She cowered by the wall, out of sight of anyone merely passing by. The Slytherin felt her skin crawling with other people's problems, she felt tiny, unimportant - easily eclipsed.

Everyone else had it so much worse. So she couldn't eat. So she couldn't sleep.

Her school still held firmly to the ground, family still in tact. Lis didn't have to worry about unexplained occurrences, not directly. By any and all accounts, Lis was just a melodramatic girl who wanted the world to revolve around her.

Lisbeth didn't want to be found, however, she wanted to piece herself together and try again tomorrow. There wasn't anything to say, anyway. She just felt awful. Out of control. Worried about her own self destructive tendencies.

She didn't like the thought of someone being paid to listen to her problems.

Lis started as a dog poked it's nose out of one of the rooms. A golden retriever that had seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Friendly pooch, padded her way without any prompting, "Wouldn't do that, I don't think you'd like being singed." The dog nestled its nose right into her lap regardless, fearless, and Lis felt a sense of relief. "You'd better not be slobbering on my uniform." Lis pulled his snout up with both hands and attempted a stern look - but dissolved into giggles as her nose was licked instead.

"Bouncer?" Came the voice of the dogs owner. Max pulled the door open the rest of the way. There was a pencil behind his ear, and he stood looking quite professional. He wore a nice pair of black slacks, a good shirt, and a gray vest, "Oh!" The man said when he saw the dog with a girl.

He chuckled as he watched the Golden Retrievers head turn and saw his tail begin to wag again, "What?" A hand reached down to pat the pup on the head, "Well, seems you don't mind dogs. That's good."

She was the one who had been pushed in the great hall. He smiled at her, "You want to come in?" He said, and a hand stretched out to invite her into his office.

Lis froze as a person followed the dog, she felt ambushed - only a pet had snared her instead of a pitfall or trap. Worse was who the person was, and how close they were in accordance with the golden retriever. Maxwell Ross smelled only as an accomplished, well dressed man could. She tried not to notice, "He was just flirting a bit." Lis murmured, shifting subtly away from everything. Her hands fell from the dog, with a nervous twitch of a smile.

She froze again at the Councillor's smile, suddenly unsure the proper way to react to normal human interactions, "Uh..." Lisbeth looked at Max's hand, brows furrowing. "No, I don't think so..."

What a strange sight she must have been, sitting outside his office without any intention of going in. Lis wasn't so quick on her feet as some, no easy lies came to mind to explain her presence. Instead, she could only resist the urge to flee and spend the rest of the night hating herself. She stood, "Or maybe true to his name and annoyed with the loitering." Bouncer the dog.

"Don't mind me." She'd find somewhere else to haunt.

Max shrugged and brought his hand back, pushing it into his pocket, "Door's always open. Even during meals." He added at the end, "Which is... really great. Do they do things like that for the students now, too? Or do you still need to sneak into the kitchens if your caught up studyin'?"

"Nah, lassie, he is definitely a lover of loiterers." He shook his head at the dog, "Some great watchdog, he is. Most inappropriate name I've ever given to an animal. At least he let's me know when people are about. Though it's more for his own gain, you know; A scratch behind the ear, a pat on the belly.. don't lett'im fool ya. "

The man looked around the area, Nit's door was closed just across the hall. She was likely busy with something. "You sure you don't want to step in? I think bouncer would love your company." He offered one last time to the girl. If she didn't want to stay, then he'd leave her alone with the dog and find something else to do to occupy his time. He had his final appointment in an hour or so.

If you don't stand for something, you might fall for anything.

The last time Lis had stolen out of a common room, late in the night, one of her friends had been petrified. How long ago had that been? Reflexively, her hand wound around the arm that had acquired a tattoo that night, "I've no idea," Lisbeth supposed it made sense for there to be alternative ways for students to acquire food, but when did anything ever make sense? "I imagine it's difficult to sneak anywhere these days."

Lisbeth wondered if the Councillor had been here during the Elementium War, certainly he wasn't that old? Her parents' age. Eugh. Had he been in between? When things were, relatively, normal?

Lassie. Lis grimaced, though she wasn't sure why. Max, for his part, seemed excessively easy to talk to. He would need to be, given his profession.

Her attention was drawn to Bouncer, "Still, bit more altruistic than a cat." Rook, her own pet, was sweet when he needed to be. Mostly, her cat was fairly independent. It came with long days alone, sleeping on the windowsill, vying for bits of warmth in the dungeon. There was a very good reason that familiars were generally more solitary creatures. A dog wilted without affection. An attached dog would croon and howl if left on its own. "You won't see them going up to someone who's upset." Not unless they were hungry.

Lis hesitated, but smiled, "Bored or something?" It was rude, she realized belatedly. Her sense of humour almost always was.

Max knew he shouldn't have been surprised that the girl didn't asked him about attending Hogwarts. It was part of his native land, it probably made sense withut her asking at all. "No? Sneaking around is half the fun of being here, though!" At least it had been for him. Like most Gryffindor boys, right? Or, the exciting ones, at least. Whoch.. of course, he was.

Max noticed her grimace and smiled warmly,"Sorry for being informal. I'd much rather call you by your name?" Another thing that she didn't need to entertain.

"I could paint for a bit, I guess. But I don't have an appointment for another hour, and my cousin is busy." He shrugged again. Having someone to talk to would help the time pass, it was getting too dark to accurately paint the latest sunset over the lake. Candle light wasn't the best light to paint in.

"Gryffindor, then? Or is that type casting?" Not all Gryffindors. She pressed her palms against the wall, glad for how cool and sturdy the stone was. "Did the two of you..." Lis gestured vaguely to indicate the other Councillor, "Both go here?"

Lis shook her head. Informality wasn't a problem. She'd likely die if anyone were to start referring to her as Ms. Elliot - which couldn't be done given there were two of them, anyway. "Lisbeth, I guess." The Slytherin released a small puff of embarrassed air, "I mean, that is my name, though I don't think it's any more formal."

"You paint?" Crap. "I guess you'd have to do something, since you allegedly never leave your office."

As always, it was nice to talk with someone. Lis had a tendency to balloon out her problems when she was alone, which was why she had been so glad to have Booker over for the majority of the summer. They'd spent plenty of afternoons laying around, doing nothing. Things had been a bit strange towards the end of the summer, and they weren't spending as much time together. It was likely the'd fall back into old habits when the school work became too much to attempt solo. Tomorrow. She'd bug him tomorrow. Whether he liked it or not.

Still, Lis clung to the edge of the conversation, unsure if she should enter Maxwell's office; worried something would change.

Max's head tilted to the side a little, "You got it! How'd you guess?" there was a broad smile on his face. Max had held a lot of pride in his great house while he attended the school. He still had the the t-shirt that he made that all Gryffindors wore to the quidditch games at home. He shook his head, "No, Nitsa went to Hacates in Greece. Her dad was an alumni so she went." The details of his cousins distaste for that situation didn't need to be shared with this student.

Max smiled at the girl as she stood, "Well, nice to meet you, Lisbeth."

"Yeah, it keeps me busy. Want come see some of my work?" he offered. It was her final chance to step in if she wanted to. Max wasn't about to keep bugging her.

Lis' mouth curled into a grin, despite herself. Maybe if only because Max's enthusiasm reminded her of Beck. Almost. She figured his question to be rhetorical, even so. That was how obvious his previous house had been to her. "I haven't heard much of that school. Which is good, I guess. Probably means it's still there." Their school was at capacity these days, even despite the limit on foreign students allowed into the castle. Lis wondered how many students had passed through, or would pass through. The foreign students, especially ones from Salem, likely had problems that needed addressing.

She wondered if, like DADA, they would eventually be required to be evaluated psychologically.

"I would..." Lisbeth paused and nearly laughed at herself, he'd managed to find a way to drag her into his office willingly. Go figure. Was that deliberate on his part? Lis was thinking too much about it, as always. Instead she sighed and shook her head, hair falling in a curtain from around her shoulders, target acquired.

Art and music were passions. Or they had been, once. These days it was difficult to convince herself toward any of it. Though, strangely enough, she'd started writing songs. That had always been more Beck's thing. Lis wondered if it was a passing fancy, "I'm not very good with paints, but I enjoy drawing." Hesitantly, she pulled up the sleeve of her arm. Her interest in tattoos had expanded exponentially since she had given one to both Ree and Ryan. She used her body as a canvas more often than naught, and might have attempted convincing her parents to allow her to draw on the walls of her room had Booker not been over for the summer. Lis still had the birds, which had been her first real attempt.

She couldn't show the entirety of her latest addition, which spanned from her shoulder to her elbow - the start of a sleeve that would likely progress and change as years went by. "None of it's permanent." Lis was quick to say, as most adults seemed to have a problem with minors getting tattoos. Much less drawing them personally.

"That's true. As far as I know, it's still standing." Not that he wanted to think about the place at all.

Ah, yes! Max had to contain his excitement that the girl would come in, especially after what had happened the day before, "Please, come in then." But then she mentioned she liked drawing, and demonstrated it by showing tattoo that had begun on her arm.

Tattoos weren't something he'd ever really thought about getting, himself. He did appreciate the work though, and especially the detail. "Wow." Was all he could really state at first, not wanting to ask questions right away, then she answered the main one for him. They were temporary. He chuckled, "I bet you get a lot of practice in that way. Something that you're looking to do when you're older?"

Lis didn't mention that the tattoos could very well be permanent, if she so wished them to be. It wasn't like they would wash off, or peel away given enough time; they weren't cheap stick-on ones. Strangely, she found herself feeling prideful over them, and glad that Max's wow had seemed more admiring than full of scrutiny. She stayed up late, curtains drawn on her four poster bed. Drawing could be therapeutic, and she didn't mind the pain overly. There was something especially nice about removing something from her body when she no longer liked it.

Lisbeth didn't think about the future, though she was now at the age where it was important to. "No, probably not." What would she do? Lis didn't want to think about any of that. She was having a difficult enough time going to classes without worrying her future would be ruined. "I hear people start hating things when they turn it into a job."

The two of them were lead into the office by Bouncer, who was thoroughly disappointed that attention had been drawn from him.

Why should I apologize for the monster I've become? Nobody has ever apologized for making me this way.

In the absence of students (oh was she bored), Nitsa decided (because she was bored) that shelving the entirety of her book collection on her own was a "good idea" (because damn was she seriously bored).

Now Nitsa wasn't exactly short, but she had a rather large amount of books (though she had let herself be talked into leaving some at home), so her bookshelf was rather tall. And she didn't have a stepstool because she hadn't thought of it.

Standing on tiptoe, she gave the tripod cuddle bug panting in the corner an annoyed glare. "You know, you could help me with this. Hypothetically." Perhaps it was unreasonable to think that her three-legged, currently lazy German Shepard would come fetch books for her without being trained to do so. Perhaps.

She had a self=satisfied smirk on her face as she finished placing the last book on the highest shelf....

then her calf gave out. And poor Nitsa went tumbling down, bringing a cascade of books tumbling down on top of her.

She felt a little bit like a zombie that had been buried alive. Ow. There was Penny's tongue, licking Nitsa's hand, the only thing not covered in books right now. "Max?!" She yelled out, hoping he wasn't with another student and could hear her. "I think I'm gonna need a medic!"

Lisbeth jolted right out of her skin at the sound from Nitsa's office. Bouncer was on his feet too, and out the door. Less surprising was the dramatic plea for help. Lis was curious about the cause of the noise, but figured she'd be of better use doing something more than standing outside a different office.

"I'll go grab someone from the Hospital Wing." The Slytherin offered, her face set into an apologetic grimace. This was one way to spend an hour, right?

With a glance backward, she darted down the hallway towards the Hospital Wing.

Max shook his head and went to respond to the girl, but then he heard a loud sound, like many things tumbling, and then Nitsa's voice calling out for him. He turned around, startled. Quickly, he started to move in the direction of his cousin's voice, unsure if the Slytherin was following behind him or not, but then registered that she was going to get help.

"Nit?" He called out, rounding the corner to her office. She was beneath the pile of books, her German Shepard has licking her hand. Max got down and started pulling the books off of her. Finally, after pulling the last book and the ladder away from Nitsa and completely overlooking her body, he relaxed a little.

"Are you hurt?" He asked her, calmly as to not alarm the woman.

Muffled noises and that was definitely her name. "Max?" She asked hopefully. This was very uncomfortable. "When I said we had to be careful about burying ourselves in work, this wasn't what I meant." This little tidbit from Nitsa had come a couple of years ago, after a six month relationship had gone down the toilet. After which she had decided to-- what else? Bury herself in work. It had been one of her less successful ideas

Nit winced as she pushed herself up into a sitting position. "Well, I banged myself up pretty good, but broken? I don't think so." She pressed a hand the her head as she mentally checked herself for injuries and wondered how it was possible to be so stupid you actually fell over due to your own stupidity.

Penny walked over in front of Nit and sat down, pushing her snout under Nitsa's hand. Almost reflexively, Nit started scratching Penny's ear. "Thanks girl, you did good." She smirked and glanced up at Max. "Now that the books are off of me, I'm ok, Max. I promise. No need to look like someone just stole your candy." Some teasing ought to tell him that she was just fine.
