Carmen was stretched across a couch with her head resting on the back of a plush, sapphire pillow. Her feet were propped up on the couch's thick armrest, and beside her, a roaring fire licked haphazardly at the dry, cracking at the wood in its grate. The warmth was comforting in the chilly Ravenclaw Tower; windows were propped open where a group of students were sitting, coaxing barn owls in with treats.

But Carmen was alone. Propped in front of her, she held a book in her hands, but her eyes hardly jumped across the page. She kept reading the same sentence, over and over, only because she couldn't concentrate.

“Have you fallen in love with the wrong person yet?"

Jace said, "Unfortunately, Lady of the Haven, my one true love remains myself."

Carmen sighed, setting her book down against her chest. She closed her eyes, the sounds of the crackling, spitting fire luring her into sleep. Her sister, Poppy, was upstairs already, skipping through life like the ray of oblivious sunshine she was. Everyone else seemed to be keeping to themselves.

Maybe they all hate me, Carmen thought, but she pushed the thought away just before she fell asleep.

Eudora walked into her common room quietly. She'd been reading at the library allnday, trying to figure out how to better understand why Nashton had no emotions. None. There was barely excitement. Today she'd read through three medical articles and two books, and still nothing. It seemed that the Wizarding world didn't care if wizards had no emotions.

Plopping down in the armchair by the fire Eudora pulled out another book and opened the front page. A soft thud made her jump. Putting a hand on her chest to calm her racing heart Eudora saw it was on of her own books, it had slid off of the table. Carefully, she put it back in her bag. Looking up to notice her surroundings for the first time since sitting down, Eudora saw Carmen.

Quietly Eudora made her way over to the couch and crouched beside the blonde girl. Gently she shook her classmates shoulder. "Come on, wake up, you don't want to spend all night out here." Eudora's tone was soft and quiet. Soothing almost, like she had done this several times before.

Carmen's eyes fluttered open. She sat up, rubbing her eyes. Behind her hands, she mumbled.

"Thanks," she said quietly. "I don't know what's gotten into me lately. Falling asleep like I own the place..." Gently, she set her hands down and glanced at Eudora. She offered the girl a sweet smile, but couldn't help but wonder if Eudora, too, harbored a secret hate for the girl who liked Beck.

"You're up late," Carmen then said.

Eudora shrugged. "Research." She nodded at the pile of books that were piled up against the chair. She offered Carmen a small smile, but it quickly faded.

"Classes have been pretty stressful I wouldn't worry too much about crashing out here." Eudora made her way back to the chair she'd been sitting in previously.

"I'm sure no one else minded you out here, I didn't either, but I thought you might want to be in your own bed." She smiled for a split moment but then stopped suddenly.

Eudora didn't have friends she used to have Pandora but she didn't even have her twin anymore. Dora wasn't even close to knowing how to make friends.

“You’re only partly right,” said Carmen. “I’m not entirely sure that I’ll be able to sleep. Not only because my mind is full of classes.”

To be an Auror like Carmen hoped, she would have to ace her courses; she would have to be one of the best. Real world experience was surely on her side, for Carmen was one of the only Seventh Years that could honestly and easily say that they had battled for the right to live. Who else could? She was a Tournament champion; she had bruised her hands and skinned her knees all for some kind of ridiculous glory. All for some kind of justice.

But that, along with her father’s legacy, wouldn’t get her anywhere if she couldn’t prove her skills. Carmen supposed she could always default and become a dragon tamer – but that wasn’t continuing her father’s work, before his life abruptly ended…

“I suppose career day has everyone in a little… panic,” said Carmen quietly. “I can’t imagine anything being more stressful than the future.”

Eudora's eyes snapped to Carmen's face at the mention of a career day. She hadn't thought of a career. What if Nash expected her to stay at home. Quickly she pushed that thought away, Nash wouldn't care what she did.

"The future is pretty panic inducing." Eudora wasn't sure if Carmen knew of her engagement. Most people did, and most people knew it was arranged. Which meant most people treated Dora like she was spineless.

"I mean, what else is so unknown?" Eudora ran her hand through her hair and then tapped the top cover of the book she had in her hands.

Of course Carmen had her own problems to work out. From the whispers in the halls Eudora knew that Carmen was the villain for having a fling thing with the missing girl's boyfriend. Out of seemingly nowhere Eudora, blurted, "If you need to talk about... you know... I will listen." Eudora blushed as she realized she'd changed the conversation to something so personal. She was clearly embarrassed by herself.

Startled, Carmen sat up a little straighter. For a second, she wasn’t sure what Eudora meant; after all, Carmen’s life was always a maze of problems, one after the other. Her grandfather had made headlines for being the victim of a brutal murder, her father’s murder was still unsolved and Carmen? Well… for the most part, her life was quiet. She didn’t know her grandfather. Her father was an Auror; it was to be expected. And Carmen herself knew she was strong enough to handle whatever came her way.

Regardless of those things, no one had ever really asked her if she wanted to talk. Carmen had Antoine and Beck, of course, and she knew she could probably tell Antoine anything if she needed to. She had James and his friends, too, and Imogen – but she would never really confide in them, would she?

Carmen sighed. Whatever Eudora meant, Carmen could only assume it had something to do with the fact that every grapevine was shuddering under the weight of its juicy Gray family gossip.

“I’m alright,” admitted Carmen. “Although the fact that I’m so alright, you know, tends to bother people, I think.”

Carmen didn’t spend her days wondering what would happen if Billie Baker walked through the Great Hall doors. She didn’t allow herself that thought; she couldn’t, really.

“I don’t know,” sighed Carmen thoughtfully. Then, she glanced at Eudora. “How’s Nash?”

Eudora blinked and then nodded. "At least you are okay with it. Forget what everyone else thinks." Eudora offered a small smile for a moment. Carmen really was a strong young woman.

Even if the blonde girl didn't realize her own strength. Eudora nodded momentarily and then froze. Nobody ever asked about Nash. There were snide comments thrown her way in the hallways, and whispers when she sat down at lunch, but nobody actually asked her about her future husband.

"Nashton is... himself." Eudora didn't feel comfortable enough to continue to say anymore about Nashton.

"You are the first person to ask that." Eudora offered a small smile at Carmen.

“I love love,” said Carmen casually, as if she were talking about the weather and not Eudora’s impending nuptials. In many ways, Carmen supposed she was jealous – she had spent decades fantasizing about what she would look like bathed in a gown of white, but had forced the idea down her throat. A career is what she would seek, just like her godmother and mother. A strong woman is what she would claim as her identity, not the trophy on the arm of another pureblood man with a thorny family tree.

But it didn’t mean that Carmen did not admire Eudora for who she was, if only because Carmen had seen herself in such a position countless times. “Carmen Wickham” and “Carmen Yaxley” still dotted the ripped pages of old schoolbooks she kept in the bottom of her trunk.

“And different kinds of love,” said Carmen quietly. “I don’t think it’s right to pretend that it’s not happening. People should be celebrating you.” Carmen frowned slightly. She wasn’t sure if Eudora and Pandora were very close anymore, but Pandora seemed like… well, her future was sort of up in the air, wasn’t it? Eudora seemed structured, more sensible and still, treading water just as Carmen did.

Carmen felt for the girl more than she thought she could.

“It’s strange, isn’t it?” added Carmen. “How these things are just planned for us sometimes.”

Eudora smiled half heartedly at Carmen. Nash had no way of loving anyone, and she couldn't say she harbored love feelings for him. The thought was nice but it never quite panned out the way that thoughts do.

"From what I can tell, people aren't ignoring it, they're just critical." Eudora smiled at Carmen, a sad small smile. Of course if it this marriage had been on her own terms it would be celebrated, and in a way Dora Had chosen this life, it just wasn't for romantic love.

Eudora shook her head. "It's funny what we do out of love." It was out of love Eudora had said those terrible things to Pandora, and out of love she was marrying Nash. Not love for Nash, but once again love for her twin.

Unfortunately there was only so much that Eudora could do to hide Pandora ' s activities from their parents. Pandora had chosen a boy over Eudora, and that was the most upsetting part of this whole ordeal. That, and the fact everything Eudora had done hadn't mattered.

Funny. Yes, it was, wasn’t it? Carmen couldn’t help but feel sorry for Eudora – the sister that seemingly fell into the shadow, the background of everything Pandora-related. Pandora traveled the world, got an apartment with a boy despite the fact that they were children and Eudora… well, she was just a child too, wasn’t she?

Carmen frowned. She had never felt so simultaneously old and young at the same time. She was both too wise and too clueless about where she was going; she figured Eudora probably felt the same way.

“If I’ve learned anything, it’s that people will always, always have something to say, whether we want to listen to them or not,” said Carmen. “And they’ll always be critical of things that they don’t understand, or things that don’t affect them. Isn’t it easier to be critical of someone else’s life without looking at your own? I think it is.”

Eudora nodded at Carmen's words. "Of course. Of course." Eudora sighed and twirled the ring on her finger. It suddenly felt heavy on her hand. Looking back up Eudora nodded.

"Everyone judges each other, it's human nature." Eudora nodded and looked at Carmen. It made Eudora slightly uncomfortable to realize how trivial her own problems were compared to Carmen's. The girl's father had been murdered. "Everyone also believes your life is theirs to know about. Even if they know nothing besides what appears on the outside." Eudora nodded this was the story of her life.

Eudora ran a hand through her hair, so far Carmen had stayed away from the subject of Pandora and for that Eudora was grateful.

Carmen sighed. Now was as good a time as any to be honest.

“You know, I would have married Teddy,” she said, and it was the first time she had ever uttered such a thing aloud. Before, it had been reserved to the back of her mind and the pretty daydreams that blossomed in boredom. Hearing such an admittance made her shiver – but she knew it was true, and there was nothing else that she could do about it.

“I really would have,” she said again. “Even when everyone believed our life was something they should know about. Even when it was nothing like what it seemed. Even if everyone around me swore that we were wrong for each other, I would have married him anyway. Sometimes, we don’t really pick the best people for us; I watched Ted nearly kill himself, day after day, and just thought up excuses in my head. Love can do that to a person. Love makes a person blind.”

Carmen frowned slightly.

“You’re better off not knowing something like that,” said Carmen quietly. “And I’m better off for forgetting it, too.”

If only I could forget like Beck, Carmen thought, and then she felt horrifically guilty. Again.

Eudora nodded, and immediately her mind flashed to her twin and Dave. That was the type of love that ruined lives, and allowed people to turn their backs on their families. While Eudora hadn't felt that sort of love, she knew it. She knew it all too well.

"That is the sort of love that can make you blind to your own actions. The feeling that can make people forget their families." Yes, Eudora felt that her twin had chosen a boy over her. Dora had been willing to sacrifice her future to ensure her twin could live comfortably at Hogwarts, and the one thing that would be sure to get back to their parents Pandora had done.

"They say that love is saved for the best sort of people. Which leaves me wondering, am I the worst sort of person?" Eudora was oddly calm, with her hands folded carefully in her lap. She'd done questionable things in her past, agreeing to marry Nash was at the top of her list, right below it was convincing Pandora to leave, and yet, neither of those actions had been for herself. Both had been to protect her sister, who was either too dumb to realize what her actions had done, or too selfish to care. Eudora was thinking it might be a combination of the two, probably with a dash of naivete.

"Most people wait their entire lives to find the person who makes them feel special after they've had their first heartbreak. If you've found him, you should give the world the bird and go for it. Merlin knows you deserve it." Eudora nodded. Carmen had been through hell, if she wanted to date a boy who's ex was missing she should be allowed that small privilege.

It wasn't pity that Carmen felt for Eudora, but it was something strange and bottomless, like sadness or grief. Love had a way of manifesting itself like that sometimes and, no matter how many years Carmen tried to shove between her present and past, love made her think of night skies freckled with stars, expensive cologne, and glass smashed in Theodore Wickham's hands. Love was his blood, trickling from between his slender fingers, staining the hardwood floor of the Draper apartment. It was a ghost, haunting everything Carmen touched, and nothing could exercise it from her.

But Beck made her feel excited about being normal again. He was simple. The idea that she could care about someone who didn't thrive on complication made her excited to seize the future as her own... until Carmen remembered the whispers that followed them, for her happiness would never be uncomplicated.

But Eudora? She took the cake, didn't she?

"You deserve it too, you know," Carmen said quietly. "You're not a bad person for making the decisions you've made. Just look at Ezra Nott and Cordelia Yaxley. It's not completely unheard of to, you know, want to be married young... for whatever reason."

Yaxley. Elias. White picket fences and wedding dress dreams all smashed beneath his killer smile and firm hands.

Carmen sighed.

"Maybe it's all overrated," admitted Carmen. "Most days, I just think I'll end up alone no matter what happens." Like one day, Beck wakes up and forgets about me as easily as he seems to have forgotten about Billie. One day they all stop answering letters, like clockwork.

Eudora shook her head, she might deserve the live Carmen talked of, but she knew she could never actually attain it.

Eudora tilted her head ever so slightly at Carmen's words. Of course she was a terrible person. Who agreed to allow their parents to ruin their life? Weak minded people.

"You're too pretty to remain single forever. Too pretty, and too smart. Not to mention your strong will. You'll find someone it'll be okay. I promise. " It dawned on Dora that she had talked to Carmen more today then all of her classmates combined, throughout all of her schooling career. That was sad, pitiful even.

"Oh Lorrrrrd, thank you," Carmen said, and she resisted the urge to cover her face with her hands. "I mean, I can't say I really agree with you all that much, but it's always sweet to hear, right?"

Carmen found herself blushing. Her flushed face was mottled with pink, stark against the pale white of her hairline. She smiled, and her curls fell in her face. Who was Carmen to say that things wouldn't work out the way they were meant to one day? Carmen wasn't sure what working out entailed, but if Eudora was right about anything, perhaps Carmen was worrying for no real reason, after all.

It was strange realizing how often Eudora fell into the background whenever Pandora was around. Everyone always talked about Pandora this and Pandora that; she was Dave Jr's exgirlfriend, the girl who'd had her world tugged from beneath her, the innocent girl who was probably asking for it, Pandora. But Eudora?

Who ever gave her a second thought anymore?

Carmen sighed.

"You should hang out with Antoine and I sometime," suggested Carmen. "Beck, too. Most days, I just proofread my homework while Beck plays guitar and pretends to not care about our impending existential crises. And Antoine probably just lounges around, looking handsome."

Carmen snickered at the memory. "But there's always room for more, you know?"

Eudora nodded, it was always odd to have someone compliment you. From a young age children were taught modesty, and most women Eudora knew never outgrew it. "I don't think I have ever been called sweet before... well maybe once." Eudora shrugged as she watched Carmen's face blush pink.

Carmen was inviting her to hang out. To surround herself with other students their age. "Beck is the one with the hair right?" Eudora motioned to mimic Beck's unusual do. She wanted to make sure she had the right person in her mind.

"And Antoine... he's the cute one, with the..." Eudora blushed a faint shade of pink, not only was she embarrassed she had just admitted that she thought Antoine was cute, but she had managed to bring up the young man's lack of eyesight.

Carmen probably already regretted inviting Eudora to hang out with them.

The one with the hair. Carmen found herself blushing and smiling a stupid, warm smile – the kind you smiled when you were so fond of something, as if Beck was a puppy or an owl. Still, she couldn’t help herself. She knew she ought to have slapped the blush from her cheeks, or had the decency to look anything other than obsessed, but she couldn’t. She only shook her head and laughed.

“Right. He’s the one,” Carmen said, still beaming. “And Antoine’s the one with the… blind eyes and French accent. Y’know, the one from the tournament.”

Somehow, Antoine losing his eyesight had lost its shock value. It was hard to remember that there had been a time when Antoine was a warrior – someone who hated Carmen as much as he loved his ability to see.

“Most of the time, I catch myself mid-wave and forget he can barely see me,” admitted Carmen. She shook her head and laughed again. “And I swear he knows, too. He can just sense my awkwardness from a mile away. It’s hysterical, really, how someone as smart as me can be simultaneously so stupid sometimes. I can’t be the only one who feels that way, either.”

Eudora watched Carmen's blush. It was adorable really. Somehow it made her feel normal, like the last year and a half hadn't happened, and like Eudora had maintained her friendships with her friends.

When Carmen brought up the Tournament Eudora looked away. She had read about the hellish event in the newspaper, and had even snuck out to see the parade, but she had also watched her mother obsess about the bloodlines of the tributes, and the only one who had fit into pure blood society, but wasn't had been Antoine. Eudora shook the shilling thought away from her mind.

"You know, if I was around him, I'm sure I'd have my moments." Eudora sighed. "I mean have you seen him?"Eudora smiled a small sheepish smile.

"Too bad he seems devoted to his girlfriend." And you know, that Eudora was going to be married. Ignoring that fact made Eudora feel normal, like everything was great. "So have you always surrounded yourself with attractive men?" Eudora couldn't help but feel the blush creep up on her cheeks. She was mortified at her behavior but couldn't bring herself to stop.
