Quinn knocked on the door to the Transfiguration classroom three times. She let a small breath escape through her lips as she stood nervously at the door. But there was nothing. No reply, no moving of chairs either. Quinn knocked again, but another silence filled the air. Without thinking, Quinn grabbed the handle to the door and opened it up, almost stumbling into the empty classroom. She glanced around the area. She wanted to speak to Professor Flitwick.

But he wasn’t in there. Her eyebrows furrowed as she stepped into the room. “Professor?” She called out. A muffled type of shuffling caught her attention as she turned to look at the closed office door. Quinn walked over there, forcing herself to fake a confidence which she certainly didn’t have.

Quinn knocked on the door three times. “Professor? You in there?”

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud!

SCREECH!

Quinn was met with an open maw full of razor-sharp teeth. Spittle flew from its open mouth as it gave one violent warning to her before a flash of red light caused it to fall to the floor.

The young t-rex (now the size of a large dog) curled its tail around under itself as it drifted off, unconscious. Its chest rose and fell with its rumbling breaths. Some of the gray down that covered its body had fallen off and was floating in the air.

"Are you alright?" said Faustus, in a stern tone of voice. He stood behind the unconscious t-rex, where he had been unseen due to his height. His wand was in his hand and pointed at the dinosaur. He looked none-to-happy at Quinn's intrusion.

Quinn could have screamed, she could have ran from the room and over to someone, anyone, just so she could scream about what she was staring at. But she had been learning about defence with the clubs, and it had helped her with focusing herself. Even if she was scared shitless.

Quinn pulled out her wand suddenly and pointed it at the… thing. But then it collapsed to the floor. The red light flashed and the thing shrunk. She kept her wand pointed at the robot thing. “Oh yeah, I’m completely fine.” Quinn muttered, channelling the demeanour of her older sarcastic brother. She couldn’t look away from what seemed to be a dinosaur.

"Well I wish you hadn't done that," said the Professor, sternly, "but no harm done, I suppose. Be more careful from now on."

Faustus waddled back towards his desk, muttering "I thought I'd locked that damn door..."

One Faustus' desk was a small cage (about the size of one a budgie would fit in). The professor put both arms around this cage and lifted it off the desk; he then set down on the ground, and opened the door to the cage.

"Reducio," he said, pointing his wand at the unconscious dinosaur. The large bird-like creature shrunk down the size of an actual budgerigar.

"Ennervate."

A flash of orange light erupted from Faustus' wand at the utterance of the spell, and engulfed the dinosaur. The creature lay down in such a way that only one side of it's head was visible--one eye was visible which suddenly snapped open and fixed its beady black self upon Quinn.

By planting the tip of it's tiny-beaked maw on the floor, and using that as leverage, the creature was able to hoist itself onto its feet despite the relatively uselessness of its stubby arms. It shook its head from side-to-side, sending tufts of dull gray down flying into the air, squawked once, then walked off to the left; it appeared to be eyeing Quinn with suspicion.

"Forgive him," said Faustus, "He's molting; his adult feathers are growing in and it's making him miserable." Faustus glared pointedly at the creature.

"Back in the cage, you," he commanded.

The miniature tyrant lizard (that wasn't really a lizard at all) seemed to understand, and reacted by lowering its head in such a way that it appeared disappointed by the command. Yet, it trudged back into the little metal cage. Faustus closed it. When he lifted the cage and set it down on the desk, the dinosaur squawked in protest.

"They're really just big, dopey looking birds in actually," said Faustus, "About the same level of intelligence, too, which is to say more than expected. Still, somewhat disappointing, but then I suppose reality never really does match up with our imagination."

Faustus sighed, and turned his full attention back upon Quinn.

"There now," he said, "To what do I owe this interruption? What do you want?"

Quinn flinched at his words, but she had gotten used to how stern he was. In some ways, the way he spoke reminded her of her eldest brother. So she just nodded her head at his words, watching him as he shrunk the monster thing and put it into a cage. Quinn found herself stepping towards it as she saw the creature’s eye twitch open.

“Hey buddy…” She whispered as she leant down to get a good look at the animal. She found herself crouching on the floor as she wanted to reach out and touch the creature. It was just common practice for her now, after all her father worked with all types of animals and you could never really know what to expect.

“It’s fine. I’m used to it.” Quinn said easily, as though she wasn’t staring at something that you’d find in history textbooks. Quinn couldn’t quite keep her eyes off it, well until the Professor turned to look at her and asked what she wanted. She had almost forgotten in the moment. Quinn rose from the ground and cleared her throat. “I came to ask for some extra tuition, or help.”

Faustus was mildly intrigued by Quinn's response. Not too many were "used to" dangerous animals snarling them.

"Oh," he said, "How so?"

He found himself equally as interested in what Quinn wanted. Very few had approached Faustus this year; very few had the courage. Faustus preferred it that way, but the fact that Quinn had a strong enough drive to come see him today was enough to make him open to her requests.

He leaned his back against his desk and folded his hands in front of him. Thinking better of that, Faustus put his hands instead behind him, using them to prop himself up from the edge of the desk.

"Alright then, go on," he said, expectantly.

“My dad is a vet.” Quinn said with a small nod as she looked down to the professor. She turned back to look at the cage, wondering whether there could be anything added to it to make the creature more comfortable. “I’ve seen animals at their worst, going completely mental because of a broken bone or just out of panic and fear.” Quinn had helped her father on a few occasions as well, they all had.

Screaming animals was one of the only things which didn’t seem to frighten Quinn, or make her jump. She usually knew what to do in those situations. Faustus just plainly asked her to say what she wanted, and it kind of stumped her for a moment. Quinn bit her lip as she took a moment to choose her words, before clapping her hands together lightly and looking back ot the professor.

“Before you were here, Professor Boot was helping me with training to become an animagus.” Quinn pulled a book from her bag and opened it up. Inside were notes that her and Professor Boot wrote during her lessons. “She said I was talented, and we had lessons. I want to continue this so… I thought I would ask you.”

Faustus did not answer immediately. Hands folded one over the other in front of him, he scrutinized the girl in front of him. His eyes showed more disbelief than anger. He didn't think there was anyone at Hogwarts who cared enough to pursue such a difficult extracurricular, especially not a fifth year girl.

"Animagus?" he questioned, "Miss Paterson, you are aware that pursuing such a course will require registration with the Ministry, yes? There is a process. Ministry protocol would have us not indulge the students in such a way, my predecessor's actions notwithstanding."

He took a breath between statements. He did enjoy having his students dangle at the end of strings for a bit. Watching their perturbed faces was one of the few pleasures left to him in this cold, chaotic, lawless, life-threatening castle.

"...of course, your Headmaster has seen to it that we're no longer obligated to follow Ministry education guidelines. If you're willing to learn, I'm willing to instruct to the best of my ability. I never did care much for the Ministry's prescribed pedagogy anyhow."

Quinn could feel the silence settle in the air, and as it was prolonged a heavy weight grew on her shoulders. They shook ever so slightly, more so from worry than anything else. The thought of being disregarded so easily, or even yelled at for a mere inquiry… Quinn wasn’t sure she would be able to take yet another setback so easily. So many recent events had caused her fear to turn into a ball of anger, something which could have resembled confidence if it were not such an obvious point of breaking.

He only repeated the word at first, and then his explanation felt like enough. He didn’t need to say anymore, and Quinn was wondering who else she could ask. But then Professor Flitwick surprised her. Even if the silence was almost enough for her to excuse herself, he had answered just in time. A smile broke onto her lips, and she nodded.

“I know a lot already, sir. I mean, Professor Boot taught me a lot.” Quinn continued. “I don’t mind being registered with the ministry, that doesn’t bother me.”

Faustus returned her smile, happy to have at least one student out of the lot that cared enough delve deeper into the subject. Sirius Black and her friends always seemed capable, but he could tell they cared little beyond what was useful for them. MacGowan and Gray-Winters were two other students Faustus knew had potential, but Carmen had sought instead the regrettable path of becoming a brute for the government...and the less said about Ioanna the better. Of all the students from Fifth Year or Seventh Year (for some odd reason the other five years seemed fairly inconsequential to him), only Quinn Patterson had come to him looking for guidance.

"Very well then," he said, "I'll put in the necessary paperwork and vouch for your progress, dedication and character--the Ministry likes to hear that sort of thing when people are learning how to do things that could possibly undermine the total control they enjoy over their citizens."

He regarded her with an inquiring eye.

"How far have you gotten with Professor Weasley-Boot?" he asked, "Have you managed even partial transformation yet? Any revelations as to the nature of your animal form?"

Quinn nodded her head, she wasn’t even sure what sort of paperwork would need to be done. She hadn’t seen Professor Boot say anything about it, so she supposed the professor planned to do it herself. Quinn nodded her head as she took a step forward and took a seat. She decided that she would probably be there for a while.

“Kind of… I managed to gain a tail.” Quinn said scratching the back of her head. “I think it was a squirrels.” Quinn admitted slowly as she began to recall the practice she had gotten. It was hard to master, but she knew she was almost there. She knew that she could do it.

“When do we start?”
