"OUCH. BE STILL." Rumors had spread recently that there were young Bouncing Bulbs growing in the Courtyard. Ari had barely dared to believe that the school would plant something so valuable in such a rarely patrolled area. Yet, here she was, covered in dirt, hair still a bit purple from Peeves dropping an inkwell on her head before lunch, battling with a particularly strong Bulb. Dragon Skin gloves covered her small hands (better safe than sorry), and an enchanted basket, with a LID, sat by a nearby tree. The basket shook occasionally as it was full to the brim with what Ari saw as profit. She just had to catch the last one... It wasn't that she was a bad, thieving person per se. She was just an opportunist. When an opportunity arose for her to benefit, she took it. Plus, her mother had been rather inconsistant lately about making deposits to Arianna's account at Gringotts. Presently, Ari had been smacked in the face by the stems of 2 bulbs and knocked over by 4 and the profit for the dangerous plants was beginning to lose its luster. Additionally, she was stone sober. Even she knew that you didn't take on Bouncing Bulbs in an impaired state unless you wanted to end up in the Hospital Wing. But she was determined when it came to profit and it was with this in mind that she again approached the bulb that had just bounced off of her face with a determined grimace. |

"You can't honestly think that taking her to Madam Puddifoot's is a good idea, James," Sirius Black had yawned. The torrential rain and storms had let up only slightly, allowing James a moment to walk before lunch; with the grass still wet with dew, James took great care not to slip and break his neck. Alone for a blissful moment, James recalled his conversation with Sirius just moments earlier, before she disappeared to try and tackle the halo of curls that was her hair (thanks to the rain, her appearance was nothing short of comedy gold). "Well, then, where do you suppose I take my girlfriend on a date?" James had said, exhausted. "This entire premise is exhausting. Being a girl is much easier." James had almost wilted beneath Sirius' harsh glare but, now that he was alone, he had to insist that he was right. Being a girl was much easier. James shoved his hands in his pockets as he walked, distracted and thinking to himself. When he heard another's voice, he nearly jumped. He looked up and found himself in the Courtyard, where the ground was still wet from the morning's terrible rain. Instead of finding himself blissfully alone still, he... "Blimey, Arianna, what are you playing at?" James couldn't help it. He covered his mouth with his hands as he tried to stifle rude laughter; it was useless. He snickered clearly, shaking his head at the girl. "Who do you think you are, Neville?" |

Ari whirled around at the sound of laughter, guilt written across her face. Her dark hair was disheveled and falling across her right eye, and the black t-shirt and shredded jeans she was wearing were covered in dirt, sweat, and God knows what else Bouncing Bulbs carried on them. Spotting James, a flush slowly spread across her cheeks at his comment. Great. I couldn't have been discovered by some nice, quiet Type-B personality. Of course, it would be James. Suppose it could've been a teacher though so.. she thought, making a valiant attempt to brush some of the dirt off of her pants. "Not..that it's any of your business, but I'm just..taking advatage of a rare investment opportunity." she replied indignantly, attempting to hold her head high despite a noted lack of height AND dirt smudged across her right cheekbone. She brushed her hair out of her face and flashed him a sheepish grin. "Suppose I could cut you in, if you help me catch a few more. And also, if I WAS Neville I would have this situation handled already. Damn him and his talent." |

"Well, it's your lucky day," James grinned, shaking his head. "I couldn't give a damn about the money, but something about catching rogue... uh... plants seems interesting. I could use a new Sneakoscope." Smirking as Ari insulted Neville (which wasn't really difficult to do, and never really lost its humour) James approached the crime scene slowly. He lingered behind Ari, craning his neck to catch a glimpse of the horror. Bouncing... bulbs. Had Professor Gray taught about those? James couldn't keep his eyes open in Herbology half the time; something about festive sunflowers with teeth didn't sound so appealing, right? "I, uh, don't suppose you want me to... touch that," James said. Then he glanced back to the dirt covering Ari's cheeks and her disheveled curls. "I'd probably pay you to leave it alone at this point," |

Arianna smiled broadly at James' response. Fantastic. She knew Slytherins and Gryffindors were supposed to be enemies after hearing all of her grandfather's ridiculous rants but if one thing could be said for Lions, they certainly didn't back down from a challenge. Catching the damned Bulbs with someone else to reap the rewards (and the bruises) was also completely appealing to her. She narrowed her dark eyes at a nearby Bulb which had "hidden" itself behind a nearby shrub. The trick was to catch them with a charm BEFORE they launched themselves towards you. She'd found that Immobulus and Flipendo were the most effective. Flipendo stunned them (for about 15 seconds) so she'd be able to carry them to her basket without struggle. Unless she took too long, which had resulted in an impressive bruise to her right collarbone. She raised her eyebrow playfully at his.. resistance to catching the Bulbs. "Don't be such a sissy. Aren't you Gryffindors supposed to be known for your boisterous spirit and fearlessness?" she asked cheerily, pulling her wand out and pointing it at the poorly hidden bulb by the bush...which was quivering ominously. |

"Yes, we're brave. Not... well, let me not insult you any more than the dirt on your face has," James said absentmindedly. With a smile, James withdrew his wand from his sleeve and narrowed his eyes towards the great... Bulbs. The entire situation was a little underwhelming, made only great by Arianna, who was heaving as if she were a warrior. It was then that the Bulb lurched out madly, its leaves swinging like fists. James hollered; the sound that slipped from his lips sounded strangely like an animal dying. "Flipendo!" James shouted breathlessly, in between visualizing his funeral. He stumbled backward just as the Bulb's stem extended; suddenly, it was frozen midair. "You ugly little... bulb," said James, only noticing then how hilarious the word bulb was. Grinning from ear to ear, he snatched the thing and waddled with it back to Arianna's bucket. "How long have I got?" he asked. |

"Oh God," muttered Julian. He stepped forward, scowling pointedly, for he was slightly amazed at the scene unfolding before him. He couldn't decide what was worse: James, scrambling with the oddest plant in his bumbling arms, or Arianna, looking as if she had decided rolling in the dirt was her latest hobby. His day could only get worse if he died. Again. With an expression that could shatter glass, he approached the dirt-spattered duo and smirked. Even in the rain, everything from his pressed jeans to his collared shirt was eerily sophisticated -- and, perhaps, condescending in the presence of James' wrinkled pants and worn Weasley sweater. "Tell me," Julian said slowly. "Do you two always strive to look mediocre, or is this merely circumstantial?" |

Ari couldn't help it. She clapped and smiled wildly at James' accomplishment. Her enthusiasm was partialy genuine (he had conquered the mischievious plant with little to no effort) and partially in relief that it was ONE plant she didn't have to capture herself. They were spirited things, these bulbs, and she had the bruises to prove it. "You GOT IT! Brilliant! Thank GOD. I can't even begin to tell you how much of a pain in the ass doing this alone has been. Also, you've got-", she paused to check her watch, "-uh.. well.. look mate, you've got as long as you need... as long as we catch 2 more." She closed her eyes for a second at the sound of another voice. Goddamn Julian. This wasn't the first time her snotty, sophisticated, obnoxiously suave Slytherin classmate had caught her in a comprimising position. What she did out on the grounds at 2am was HER business anyways. With an exaggerated sigh, she turned to Julian. He looked perfect, as always, that asshole. Her dark eyes narrowed as she observed her house mate's perfectly pressed shirt. This is goddamn perfect. she thought irritably. It took a lot to annoy her but the tendency of boys in her House to lord their social perfection above everyone else really tripped her bitch switch. "We're not all as... financially blessed as YOU are, if you must know. This is.. simply a chance to make gains in Galleons. I'd ask you to help if I didn't know that you wouldn't DARE get a stain on your pants or a wrinkle in your shirt." she responded sweetly, putting emphasis on his noted LACK of bravado. |

Julian snickered under his breath. Arianna was an interesting specimen; he examined her like one might regard a research project. How likely was she to crumble under pressure on a scale from 1 to 5? Did she have any shred of potential? Julian was always looking, searching... taking note of the curious minds around him, always wondering who he might be able to trick into being his friend. Friends? The word itself was strange. The only true friend Julian had ever had killed him. Soooo... Julian sighed, and he flashed a haughty grin at Arianna. Her mocking voice was just a tad bit stressed. "Thank you for being so considerate about my pants," said Julian. "To be fair, they did probably cost about the same as that thing you're collecting, so it wouldn't be much of a fair trade-off..." Julian was still grinning nastily when he arched an eyebrow. "So where do you sell something like that, anyway?" |

Sometimes, James forgot how much he despised Julian T. Kahn. Then, he remembered, and his hate was blinding. Every ounce of adrenaline that had surged through his veins once he secured the Bulb for Arianna faded the moment Julian's long, monotonous drawl broke the silence. He was like a thundercloud shattering a summer's blue sky; he was like stepping in gum while skipping. Trying hard to bite down on his tongue, James couldn't help but remember everything that made Julian so easy to dislike. At the top of the list was his apparent obsession with Ariella, who was too nice to say a damn thing. Why is it always Ariella? James thought to himself. It was only until Julian asked a legitimate question that wasn't insanely condescending that James awoke from his thoughts. "Hey, yeah, that's a good question," said James. "What the hell are you going to do with that?" |

Ari had to grit her teeth, HARD, when Julian spoke. Despite his physical appeal, he was everything that she despised in her grandfather. He was arrogant, intelligent, sure of his place in life. Arianna was ...a bit arrogant yes, but she frequently doubted her intellect and where she belonged exactly. Being an sympathetic Slytherin wasn't exactly a stable place to be, in regards to a successful future. Her House excelled because of their cutthroat life skills and their ability to be objective about any given situation. Ari didn't possess either of those talents(usually) because despite her initial skepticism about new people, it didn't take that much to win her trust. Trust was dangerous. She was keenly aware of James tensing beside her. She was no fool, and she'd heard the rumors about goddamn Ariella. Princess of Slytherin, slayer of all of the decent boys in their year. She was aquainted with the girl, but they had yet to become close friends and she wondered bitterly (and childishly) why the girls who had everything life could offer (money, beauty, influence, wealth) always attracted the best men. Physically shaking her head to clear it of her petty thoughts, she glanced back and forth between Julian and James (polar opposites, if ever there were two), an unreadable smile on her lips. This would be interesting. "Don't worry about who I'm selling it to. I...know people who will pay a substancial fortune for rare plants. Even plants that are irritatingly resistant to capture." she told them both, turning her eyes to the remaining (still firmly planted) bulbs. They had to not only uproot 2 more bulbs but also catch them once they were free. Internally, Ari debated whether she should just cut her losses and take the Bulbs she had. Julian Kahn and James Potter meeting anywhere was as likely to result in a duel as a "financial accomplishment". Despite her resentment of Ariella "Queen B" du Pointe de Lac she didn't want to contribute to a goddamn brawl. She sighed and rubbed her temples. "If everyone can just be nice for about 10 more minutes, we can ALL make a decent profit. And have an interesting story, I daresay." she remarked, looking pointedly at Julian who she figured would be the instigator in any... incident. Edited by Arianna Armand, Sep 18 2015, 11:01:59 PM.

"Well, you know I'm always a fan of interesting stories," James smirked. He took a step back, observing Julian with keen interest. Slowly, Julian tilted his head and tapped his fingers against the wand still poised in his hand. What did Ariella see in Julian, anyway? Or maybe she saw nothing at all. Her distance had been blatant lately, and James wondered if that could be the reason for Julian's curled lips and sneers. "Oy, Julian, you might want to step back," commented James. "It gets a bit messy. I can't be held responsible if a Bulb jumps and whacks you in the face." Or if I do it, James snickered. Heaving a great sigh, James finally glanced back to Arianna. Had he been someone like Julian, he might have felt bad for her; instead, James only felt a rush of pride when he saw the dirt streaking across her skin and the madness in her eyes. She was a girl who knew what she wanted, and she knew how to get it. Perhaps James could hook her up with Remus. He'd absolutely kill me. "It's your turn, I reckon," said James. "How about you lure it out, you stun it, and I grab it and drag it to the bucket? And Julian stands there, full of angst?" |

Ari side-eyed James at his none-too-veiled shot at Julian and did all she could not to smile. It was treachery really, her preference for the company of THE Golden Gryffindor over someone from her own House. But she'd grown up with her grandfather's dick-ish, overbearing, self-involved attitude about ANYONE who didn't measure up to his standards. That type of arrogance was both intriquing and annoying to her, whereas the bluntness that she noticed most Gryffindors carried with them was ...more to her style. Not to say she couldn't be a bitchy, condescending asshole like a lot of people in her House but to her, that was usually a front to hide some other issue. Ari despised wasting time and dancing around how you really felt was exactly that, a waste of time. Julian was..a mild irritation to her but she wondered absentmindedly if he really had the capacity to be a decent sort.. and he was just such a giant prick lately because of.. well.. his drama with Aribella. Lord knew she wasn't one to judge someone because of their outward appearance. Those in glass houses shouldn't cast stones and all that. Turning to her classmates, she shot them a cheerful grin. "Right. So, two more will make 10, and that's-" she paused to think, "15 Galleons a piece.. 150 Galleons. So.. 50 Galleons for each of us. And that money is for helping me catch these bouncy bastards AND for keeping this adventure between the three of us. My buyer isn't.. the most..respectable fellow." she trailed off, face slightly pink. Occasionally, on her drunken adventures, she met very generous and slightly criminal new friends. |

Julian smirked. Arianna could not have been more ridiculous if she tried. Julian tried to think of who she reminded him of; it was a faint recognition, and he desperately tried to sift through his memories. Instead of recalling someone’s face, he only met a dead end. Perhaps Arianna was unlike anyone he had ever met, after all. “You don’t have to worry about me spilling your secrets,” he said. “I have enough secrets of my own. You don’t have to pay me, either.” Somehow accepting money from a woman was bloodcurdling for Julian. “Really. I don’t need anything except the permanent mental image of James, wrestling a Bulb,” said Julian, smirking. “That’s enough to get me through any rough patch.” |

Arianna tilted her head a bit when Julian spoke. She supposed she should be offended that he wouldn't take her money, as it was probably for some asinine, mildly offensive reason. Those seemed to be most of the reasons he did anything. To piss someone off. To lessen someone else. Everything he did seemed calculated to benefit himself in some way and set off alarms in Ari's head. And the RUMORS about him were disturbing to say the least. Maybe he was a waste of a "person", whatever he was. But Arianna didn't believe in lost causes. Usually. Because she was obviously stupid. A very slight frown crossed her usually smiling face, and for a millisecond, she seemed uncharacteristically serious. But the expression lasted so quick that most people wouldn't even have noticed. Her lips slid back into an easy smile as she let her thoughts sink into the back of her mind. Where they belong. He's a fucked up person but it's just catching some plants. Quit overanalyzing everything, she scolded herself internally, grabbing her spade and walking over to where the remaining bulbs were buried. As she loosened the dirt around one of the bulbs, she looked back at the Julian. "Be NICE and get ready to catch this thing." she said, a slight smile on her face as she pulled the Bulb up by its stem and stepped back as it shot towards the boys. "And watch out for the stems. They smart like a bitch." |

“I am not going to catch –” “Out of the way, you moron!” The Bulb shot out, snapping at the empty space between James and Julian. The two boys collided – Julian, trying desperately to get away, and James, trying to catch the damn money plant – and they both yelled in unison like mooing cows. Very suddenly, Julian was spinning, his eyes wide as he struggled with his supposed exit strategy, and James was rattling off a list of unique swear words. “You baboon-faced troll!” “Really? Really, that’s the best you’ve got?” When the smoke cleared, Julian and James were twisted around the long stem of a Bulb. Its face was buried into the fabric of James’ pant leg, repeatedly smashing against his knee, which was a mottled galaxy of purples and blues. James was wincing but, even worse, he was close enough to Julian to smell his cologne. The two were absolutely tangled and, now, immobile. Desperate, James stared down Arianna. “Help… me…” he said through clenched teeth. “I don’t want to die like this.” |

Arianna's initial concern for the two boys dissolved almost immediately into laughter. What a goddamn situation. Julian and James, stuck together. She wished for a second, longer than a second, that she could take a picture although she knew that both of them would immediately destroy any kind of physical evidence that this ever happened. However, Ari doubted that this memory would ever go away. Thank Merlin, because this was HILARIOUS. Her laughter made her double over, and she straightened, wiping tears from her dark eyes. She coughed to try and catch her breath, grinned, and made her towards them, stopping just short of their reach, "That couldn't have worked out better if it had been planned., she paused to wipe at her eyes again, "Looks like you've got another secret to keep, eh Julian?" She knew it wasn't entirely sympathetic, but an amused smile never left her face as she worked to unwind the stem. "You know, I figured this experience would bring us all together but you two took that to the next level.." she told them conversationally as she unwound the last bit of the stem that bound them. The bulb paused to land a brutal blow to her hipbone before bouncing off, thankfully, in to direction of her basket. "SHIT, OW. Immobulus!" The immediate karma for laughing at Julian and James was not lost on Arianna as she limped over to drop the bulb in her basket. |

Arianna’s laughter added insult to injury. Actual injury. Julian winced, determined to shake free from the binds around him; eventually, he stopped squirming, since every subtle movement sent him closer to James, and that was nothing short of horrifying. Julian, instead, resolutely stared at the sky, visible through the courtyard’s arched stone. He thought about the worst moments of his life – witnessing Tristan Nightshade eat an entire meatball sub once, getting slammed with a Bludger sent whirling by none other than Emma Gray, and dying. Oh, and waking up a ghost. The worst moments of his life, Julian could count on one hand. He would, perhaps, need an extra finger for this, though. Getting tangled next to James Potter qualified. When Arianna released the Bulb, Julian groaned. The stem whipped Julian in the chest and he fell backwards, landing sprawled across the stone. Beside him, James successfully stunned the whirling thing and began to shove it expertly into Arianna’s bucket. “What can I say? I’m rusty when it comes to Herbology,” said Julian, getting up. He brushed dirt from his back, glowering. “It’s not a really useful skill, anyway. Who wants dirt for a living?” “Maybe if you’d stop staring at Ariella in class, you’d learn something,” snickered James. Then, James grinned at Ari. “I mean, really. What would you do without us?” “Probably a lot of things,” Julian grumbled. |

Arianna's entertainment waned for a moment as she examined her bruised hipbone. Plants sucked. However, welts on her arms, a massive bruise on her hip, and dents in her dignity were a small price to pay for such an enjoyable afternoon. It was odd what could happen when a couple of unique personalities met up. And she'd been worried about a duel. Watching Julian, she couldn't help but grin. Dignified, always put together Julian Kahn covered in dirt, sweat, and probably lint or cologne that James had been wearing. The thought was just so profoundly absurd. "You're right. Herbology is ridiculous. UNLESS of course, you end up twisted together by a particularly spirited Bulb, in which case, a basic knowledge of plants could come in useful." she said airly, not making eye contact with her Housemate. Hogwarts could be complicated sometimes, dark, dangerous. And then other times...it's nice to just be young and stupid. she thought, shooting James and Julian a bright grin. "Without you lot, my life would be a lot less interesting, for DAMN sure..also" she turned to the pair quizzically and pointed her wand at the bulbs they'd captured, "-I don't think it would be unreasonable to raise the price on these a bit. Locomotor basket." And with one last grin, she walked (backwards as to keep an eye on her companions) out of the Courtyard, the basket floating along after her. |
