Carmen wrinkled her nose at the explosion of pink. From the outside, Madam Puddifoot's could almost be misconstrued as a normal cafe; the mismatched stones that stood tall against the shop's side were all the same, uniform grey. However, as soon as Carmen turned the corner, she allowed herself a little gasp. The tea shop's door opened, and pink bubbles followed a couple out. A set of chimes announced their exit and, before the door closed completely, Carmen could see the inside. It looked like a pygmy puff had vomited onto every table. Doilies! The lace alone was enough to make Carmen cringe, but the smell of macaroons overwhelmed her until the door slammed shut. Blinking, Carmen turned to glance at her date for the afternoon. "We really, really don't have to go here," she said. "I'm experiencing secondhand embarrassment." |

Beck couldn't remember ever actually stepping foot into Madam Puddifoots until now. His eyebrows may have inadvertently rose a little, his lips answered with a slight smirk, as his eyes drank in the pink and white explosion that he was about to walk into. The Gryffindor turned to Carmen, who's face was already showing hints of embarrassment before she confessed it, and tried to hide his amusement,"Lil pink hasn't hurt anyone, right?" He took her hand and led her into the establishment. Once inside and seated Beck looked around again, "Wow, yeah it's really pink in here." He whispered across the little round table to the girl and chuckled softly. |

At first, all Carmen could really focus on was Beck's hand in hers. She found herself taking note of her quick, hammering heart – more than normal, so silly that she cringed as soon as she imagined what Antoine would say at the whole damn thing. Carmen tried to will away the blush from her cheeks, but she was just thankful to be the least pink thing in the entire shop. Compared to the lush cushions on each seat, or the floral wallpaper, or even the towers of macaroons teetering in the corner of the room, Carmen was as pale as ever. Amused, still fighting the urge to run out, Carmen looked down at their table. A small bowl sat in the middle. Rose petals were floating amidst a soft pink sea; it was emanating a soft, sweet smile. Carmen wrinkled her nose and went to squint at the menu. Even the menu was pink. Carmen blanched. "You think I'd be good at ordering tea, you know, being French and all," she said, but she couldn't understand a damn thing. What was bergamot? What was blackcurrant vanilla? "I am very, uh... sober," said Carmen decidedly, and she pulled the menu up, over her face, so that the waitresses behind the counter – grinning in magenta – couldn't see her. |

Beck leaned back in his chair, and a hand reached out and grabbed at the menu in front of him. Immediately he flipped it to the back, not really interested in any regular teas. His eyes searched for anything he thought might be ridiculously sweet and found a blueberry tea. Well, that was it. "I'm not good at it, either." He was French somewhere, that much he knew. Not that someone's lineage had that much to do with ordering tea. Sober? Was that... right? The word. The Gryffindor looked up from the menu curiously, only to be met with another menu staring back at him, "You need help with it? I'm no expert or anything, and Amelia says that the tea where I'm from is terrible, but I could probably help?" He knew that there were little finger sandwiches and things like that on the menu, also. He didn't really know what to do with those choices. Ryan probably would have known, but Beck wasn't about to bring his baby sister along on a date with Carmen. There was a little giggle in the corner of the room, and that was when Beck realized how empty the place was. Normally, something like that wouldn't bother him at all. It made him wonder if he should be talking more. Maybe being obnoxious would make her feel better? Or it might just make him looked like a smacked ass. Should he be considering these things now? You don’t really know how awful silence can be until you realize you’re the one ignoring someone’s question. Carmen was too busy trying to decode flavors – startled, she looked up at Beck with rosy cheeks and wide eyes. “I’m sorry – did you say something?” she said quickly. She flipped her menu over, pointing to the back. “I was uh, thinking about this rose thing – rose petal tea cake? How do they do that? It sounds like a candle.” Without a second thought, a waitress in pink lace and a darker pink apron hurried over. Her hair was piled atop her head in spirals; it made Carmen think of a swirling ice cream cone. The effect, alongside so much pink, was nauseating. “Are you ready to order?” she said, in a voice like a whistle. Carmen winced. “Sure,” she said quickly. “I’ll have a rose petal tea cake – ” “Divine,” “And – uh – eucalyptus mint tea sounds good.” “Would you like a lemon?” “What for?” “Your… tea.” “Oh,” Carmen grinned. “Sure. Yeah. Go for it.” The waitress, taking great care not to roll her eyes, turned to Beck. “You look like you want some tea cake, too. Word on the street is there’s a love potion in some of the batches – makes for great fun!” Carmen’s eyes widened just before she sneezed into her arm and hid there. |

Beck nodded at her observation, in total agreement. Carmen's wide eyes were startling and the red on her cheeks had him fighting a goofy grin, (which he failed at hiding miserably.) He went to say something, but he was interrupted by the waitress. He watched Carmen slightly stumble over what she was saying. It hadn't been lost on him that the girl was generally timid, and seemed to have a lot of things that she was.. afraid of. There was always a lot happening around them, and by them he meant everyone. Carmen had a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. Beck suddenly felt that he should be able to take her mind off of some of that and smiled toward her, even as the waitress turned to him and asked him what he'd like next. His gaze broke away from the Ravenclaw for a moment, he'd already figured out what he wanted. Beck had seen enough people be affected by love potions, and he wasn't looking to have to see another person slobbering all over themselves for someone else, even if it was him. Atlas.. "I think I'll have a Vanilla Lavender scone. Two, please, actually. Blueberry Tea, also." The woman shook her head, but had a small smile on her face as she scribbled the order down, "Ok... We'll be with you shortly." The woman said, and he was surprised that she hadn't insisted he try the tea cake. He turned back to Carmen and shrugged, "Probably isn't true, you know?" Was he trying to convince himself or her? She was the one who seemed so nervous. Quietly, he reached across the table for her hand. He'd seen Cylas do it for Hazel before, and it always seemed to calm the woman's nerves. |

Carmen shrugged her shoulders and grinned down at Beck’s hand. She wondered if he could feel her pulse through the lines in her palms. She wondered if he realized how nice it was, for her, to feel like this. Normal. There wasn’t broken glass across the floor. There wasn’t someone else’s blood on Beck’s shirt. He was pure at heart; he repelled pain. Standing beside him felt like letting the windows open on a summer night – safe, warm. Hopeful. The only thing unpredictable about Beck soon became how predictable their friendship was. It made sense. She could deal with Antoine snickering and rolling his eyes for it. “This is nice,” said Carmen decidedly. “Especially since I’m not sure library visits actually count as dates. Though they’re nice, don’t get me wrong.” Their whispers – in between hisses for them to be utterly silent – felt like something out of a novel. These moments were things that happened to other girls with pristine pasts and killer smiles. These things did not happen to Carmen. Carmen was the girl who followed darkness, and it followed her. But as Carmen looked around the tiny pink teashop, she wondered if she had thrown darkness off her heels. Somewhere along the road, it had lost track of her. Carmen exhaled; it felt like waking up on a brand new morning. It felt like becoming clean. “So what’s the special occasion?” asked Carmen finally. “Are we celebrating the procrastination of our Potions homework? Because, you know, I was thinking…” Carmen faltered at the look on his face. “Well, I can tell you later,” she grinned. “There’s nothing less romantic than wormwood and powdered asphodel.” |

A light chuckle escaped the Gryffindor, "We are procrastinating potions homework.." Homework was the first thing she thought about? That was normal, though. Probably. "Actually, I wanted to apologize to you." He started, and immediately felt stupid for saying it first and not last, and scrambled to find something else to say after that made sense, "I like you a lot Carmen. I can't remember not liking you, to be honest. I've just been really distracted lately, and I feel like I've been acting completely stupid around you." Everything with Billie.. Everyone knew by now, he had no control over the fact that he had forgotten her, and the girl hadn't returned. Surely, she was truly missing. Cut to the chase, man. "I guess, I just wanted to ask you out. So I did." He smiled, "I was excited when you said yes, I was excited when we kissed, but I haven't been giving you the attention you should probably be getting, and for that, I'm sorry." Still not getting to it. He leaned closer, across the little sweetheart table, "I know Antoine will sneer for a while, and other s will probably make comments, but I wanted to ask you-" The waitress came back just then. He leaned back again to allow the lady to get everything spread out on the table. Beck had decided not to keep talking until she was done. |

Carmen’s breath caught. She felt suspended in a movie – watching someone else’s life pass before her eyes, never once believing that such a brilliant thing could belong to her, and her alone. She sat, frozen in place, staring at the tangle of their hands. This was easier than meeting Beck’s eyes, because Carmen was sure her cheeks would erupt in a blazing blush if she did… But Carmen couldn’t help it. She looked up, meeting his eyes. He seemed so sincere (and maybe a bit nervous) that Carmen smiled brilliantly. When the waitress bumbled over, Carmen cursed under her breath. “Is everything okay, miss?” the woman asked. Her voice, so shrill, was nothing but a whisper. It sounded like a dog whistle. “Did I forget something?” “No, no,” insisted Carmen, now blushing. “It’s – uh – wonderful – ” “You must taste the cake now,” she said. “Just a small taste.” “I haven’t much of an appetite anymore,” Carmen offered, staring at the wiggling pink mountain of frosting on her plate. “Maybe in a – ” “Oh, a small bite! It’s delicious,” the waitress insisted, and Carmen felt like her dream had shifted into a horror sequence. To spite her, Carmen shoveled an entire forkful of cake into her mouth. There was still frosting on her lips and cheek when she looked at the waitress and smiled. “It’s great. Wonderful. Amazing. Great!” she twitched. “Okay! Bye!” Grinning, the waitress vanished. Carmen turned back to Beck and hicupped. “I don’t… feel so good,” she said, still covered in frosting. Her eyes widened a little and she took Beck’s hand. “I, uh – what were you saying?” |

Beck wasn't sure how to take the strange insistence of the woman that was serving them. Poor Carmen opted to appease the woman so that she would leave them be. The Gryffindor's concern probably showed on his face. There was a little bit of frosting remaining on her face, which would have just been funny, if she hadn't said she didn't feel well before turning back to him, "Are you going to be alright?" He looked down at their hands, then back up. "I.. I just wanted to ask you, would you like to keep dating? I guess.. Be my girl, you know?" Out of all the corny ways he could have asked! Beck was steady, anyway, not really wanting to ruin the moment. It was a 'moment,' right? Edited by Beck Elliot, Dec 31 2015, 12:42:30 AM.

Carmen choked on her own spit. Somehow, she managed to still be pretty. It was just inescapable – the happiness that colored her pale cheeks the color of rose petals also ignited a light behind her eyes. For a few minutes, she coughed into her tiny, balled-up fist and closed her eyes to avoid catching Beck’s probably horrified glances. When she was sure she could breathe on her own again, Carmen reached forward. Her small hands were quick to seize Beck’s. She knew all the things she should have said. She knew the things she should have asked – is this what you really want? Carmen was used to doubt; even in her own mind, there was a shadow of another girl with a killer smile and iron eyes, judging and waiting… And then Carmen pushed the thought of Billie Baker far, far away. “I’d love nothing more,” said Carmen. “I guess this is a good time to thank you. You know, I just want to… you know, thank you for showing me what my life should have been this entire time. I should’ve been a normal fucking kid, having this… you know… fun time with someone who gives a sh – I mean, you know what I mean, right?” Carmen was rambling, and she could only hope that Beck would think it was endearing. “I’ll stop,” she said, the closest to happy she could manage. “But yeah, I’d like that.” Hope you’re ready for this. |

Carmen's original reaction made Beck kind of want to crawl out of the place for this first time since they walked in. What she did next was actually confusing as a follow up. She was grabbing his hands and thanking him. Thanking him... for helping things be normal. He swallowed, feeling this whole time like Teddy Wickham's shoe's would be hard pair to fill. Maybe that wasn't what Carmen wanted, or needed. Maybe she just needed something unchanging; steady. Beck could do that for her, he thought. He relaxed a little, offered her a smile. How could he not? She was excited! That was good. "I think I might know exactly what you mean." After all, normal was exactly what he was looking for too, right? He wouldn't mind it. A normal life, with a normal girl, that wanted it that way. It felt like all he could ever ask for. All that he could ever want. Edited by Beck Elliot, Dec 31 2015, 12:41:27 AM.
