The End of Terms; Year 5 - End of Term Feast

Do not pity the dead. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love.

The Great Hall was empty, save for the few staff which had arrived early. The four house tables were lined with golden plates and silver goblets, soon to be filled by a sumptuous feast that would appear from out of thin air. From the rafters hung the blue banners of Ravenclaw (the previous year's House Cup winners) to be changed upon the announcement of the current year's recipients during the closing year announcements. For the moment, it was calm.

Headmaster Albus Dumbledore took his seat at the high backed chair in the middle of the staff table. A few chairs down sat Faustus Flitwick, transfiguration professor, casting accusatory glances at the old wizard. Albus paid him no mind.

At last, once the preparations were complete, Albus raised his hand. With a simple flick of his wrist, the doors to the Great Hall clattered opened, shattering the silence. That silence would not be recovered, for as soon as the doors opened, in poured hundreds of eager students discussing summer plans, OWL or NEWT marks, or whatever frivolous nonsense that seemed important to them at the time. Albus, fingers folded gently at the table, was content with simply watching them go by.

The End of Term celebration had begun.

The excitement was overwhelming. Even Elandri felt wrapped up in it, despite the slight dread that the end of term brought with it. She was excited to be going home, but was not looking forward to perhaps not getting to see a certain someone. The last few months had been sheer bliss. Thankfully the girl had managed to keep her head on her shoulder enough to actually ensure herself a passing grade in each of her subjects. It was somewhat difficult when it was so much more fun to be distracted.

As the doors to the great hall opened, she followed the crowd to each of the four house tables, admiring the Ravenclaw colours that adorned the Great Hall. Despite her house being Gryffindor, she'd always liked the blue of Ravenclaw so much more. She'd never voice that opinion out loud though. She took a seat far enough away from a group of first year girls who were giggling and talking in an excited tone about everything they planned on doing over the holiday. It did give her some grand ideas about perhaps sending an owl to a few people to perhaps come around, meet her parents and spend a few days together. Even if it was just one person in particular. Of course, the thought stirred up the butterflies she always got just thinking about Dave. Though, perhaps it was the idea of her parents actually meeting him, or the thought that it was too soon, or that they wouldn't approve, or wouldn't support their decision. The nervous knot in her stomach tightened a bit before she took a deep breath, calming her nerves which really were fraying for no reason. Reality was so much more different than fantasy.

As the hall filled, she kept asking the few people that encroached on the places either side her to scoot away and make room as those places were 'taken', all the while looking about as discreetly as she possibly could for any of their familiar faces.

The realisation dawned on her as she waited that she'd not get to see her bear before she had to leave. She'd only managed to see him a handful of times, and Dave had never been around whenever she'd visited Fikk. She'd always been so excited to introduce the two, though she wasn't sure that he'd have approved in any case. He hadn't seemed so keen on the idea that first night they'd officially met either.

Elandri wasn't able to get too wrapped up in her thoughts though, not once the cacophony of voices became apparent to her again.

A young woman entered the Great Hall. She was very short, slightly overweight--but not pudgy, as if she had a natural propensity for weight gain, but worked to keep it off as best she could, as could be seen in how her arms and legs are actually somewhat shapely. The hair on her head was a dark brown color, and she was wearing a pink cardigan which was wrapped around her waist over her school uniform. The tie on that rested over her blouse was silver and green.

The makeup on her face borderlined on being garish, far too heavy and wrong for her complexion. For a fair part of the school year, her makeup had been better, as if someone for more adept at the art had being doing it for her. The bad contouring job she'd done makes her otherwise roundish face appear too sharp and forward--like a lizard. On her head was a large black bow which calls to mind the image of an insect perched on top of her. As she walked towards the Slytherin table, she was very fast, despite the shortness of her legs--like a skittering creature, thereby completing the impression of Dolores Jane Umbridge II as some kind of lizard-person on the hunt for for a big juicy fly.

Yet she held her head up. There's resilience to her, as if she is aware that her makeup is exactly right. As if she did it all on purpose, as if she doesn't care.

She sat down at the Slytherin table, alone for the most part, and cracked open a small book, which she began to read, silently.

We're fragile. Wish I'd have known.

This was it. The end of an era.

Dave entered the Great Hall, pausing as he crossed the threshold. He stared around the room, wondering if he would ever seen the inside of these halls again. He imagined he'd visit at some point, but it would never be quite the same.

Where would he go? Where would he end up? Would he still be in contact with his friends? How could he hold a relationship together with Elandri if they didn't see each other anymore? All of these questions swam around Dave's head, and he couldn't shake an intense foreboding that seemed to have followed him around all day. He hoped it wasn't showing on his face.

Each step Dave took toward the Gryffindor table was done under duress, as though his refusal to attend the feast would somehow cause it to be postponed, hopefully forever. He wanted to sit with his friends and have it feel like old times again, but the knowledge that it would be one of the last times made it hard to focus on the good feelings. Dave absent-mindedly touched the Head Boy badge on his chest as he crossed the room. Had he made his school, his house, and his family proud? Had he lived up to the legacy of those who had served before him?

Dave chewed on the inside of his cheek. His legs felt heavy, weighted by the invisible stresses he carried on his shoulders.

"Hey you," Dave greeted Elandri when he finally made it to the table. He swooped behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders, planting a kiss on the girl's cheek. Their relationship was a poorly-kept secret at best, and tonight, Dave couldn't find the effort to care any longer. Elandri was everything he never knew he needed. She was kind, understanding, thoughtful, and affectionate, and most of all, didn't pass judgment based on what other people told her. Dave had made a horrible reputation for himself, and had been spending the better part of his time atoning for his sins when Elandri sauntered into his life unexpectedly. Since then, everything just seemed to work, and he had a lot to be happy for, but the worst part about having everything is the possibility of losing it all. Dave felt a hard lump in his throat as he caressed the girl, unsure of what their future would hold now that he was moving on to the adult world without her.

No wave will shatter these scales.

The Slytherin Head of House sipped at a golden goblet as the students began to flood the Great Hall. This year had been particularly exhausting, but a valuable use of time that would pay off in the end. Much knowledge had been gained, and soon enough, the world would be a better place because of it.

The man was not himself tonight. He was alert and focused, as if expecting something to happen at a moment's notice. These feasts were often the site of surprise encounters, and constant vigilance was now the name of the game. Hopefully, everything would go off without a hitch.

He waited.

The person John was looking for had become adept at making herself hard to spot. She used to be impossible miss, looking like a goth kid that fell through a timewarp from the nineteen nineties, but she was looking fairly plain these days. John knew that was none of his business, though, and he didn't get hung up on those things. She was probably enjoying her anonymity.

But John decided that, tonight, he wasn't going to let her sit alone on the last day of school--You know...if she wanted.

It took a while, but he managed to catch a glimpse of short pigtails and starkly pale skin. He waved her over.

"Ioanna!" he called out, "Over here!"

Ioanna, being her usual antisocial self, felt her insides clench at the sound of her name being called loudly from across the Hall. She cringed. Her fingers tightened like a vice grip around the spine of the book she carried. She turned to see John Baxter of all people waving her over.

Now why the heck would he want to talk to her? They'd spoken maybe twice--if you don't count the time her body was used to trick him and his friends and nearly kill them?

She gave him an incredulous look before turning around, intent on ignoring him.

Internally, she sighed.

Don't be a bitch, she thought to herself.

She took a deep breath, and turned around.

Maybe she needed a distraction.

Now, here's the thing: Ioanna was scary as shit. At least John thought so. And John...John was a pussy. There wasn't much of a nice way to put it. Ioanna always looked ready to bite someone's head off, and John didn't like getting his bit. It had little to do with the trauma-inducing events of last year, and everything to do with her personality.

But, being the pussy that John was, he was sensitive to how people's behaviors were a defense. He played at the finer points of masculine social politics. He shot shit, so to speak. He cut up. He knew when to not take the insults that would fly around between men seriously. He didn't always, but he got the gist somewhere down the line. His dad had always been the quiet type, so experiencing the ways boys communicated and related to each other was a bit of a shock to him at first. But he soon acclimated to locker-room talk.

But when people were genuinely mean--and perhaps this was something he'd learned when trying to come to grips with why his mother acted cruel sometimes--he always wondered why. Maybe learning to take and dish out shit-talking had been good for him in that regard. Even if Ioanna wasn't going to be friendly, it didn't really phase John.

It was the anticipation of it that made him a bit jumpy.

But the mean-spiritedness he'd been expecting...it never came. He'd seen her duck behind the crowd once he'd called out, so he knew she'd heard him. He was just about to shrug and walk away when, out of the crowd, she appeared.

"Yeah?" she asked.

"Well...hey," said John, awkwardly.

"Hey?"

And the awkwardness built up from there. Such a simple thing to ask, but people like John and Ioanna had a way of making these things more complicated.

Now, some of this was Ioanna's fault. She was standoffish at the best of times and very suspicious of people's intention. She liked to stay away from that which she could not control. She couldn't control much.

And it was easier to push than to pull.

"Hey," John answered back.

John's uncertainty grew. There was too much shifting for a single moment, over something that didn't really matter in the end. But it mattered to him, because John wasn't quite so self assured. He liked to flit around each social circle, because John didn't know who he was.

"So...Just wondering if you..."

"Yeah...?"

And see, Ioanna was a little like that, too. She didn't really click with any clique, and not for long on odd occasion she hung out with anyone more than one lunch period in a row.

But the difference was one of experience. Io had plenty of it with boys before, despite being as antisocial as they come, and she'd come to expect a certain number of things which put her a bit on edge. And John didn't make it any better since, just with her incredulous glare he looked ready to break. Nobody likes a broken reed.

This had failure to launch written all over it.

And John's intentions were pretty pure as far as they go.You know, he's red blooded guy and it wasn't like this chick was that bad to look at. He was just the type of guy who would move past five people who wanted to hug him just to find that one person that didn't know him yet, just so he could figure them out and, maybe, figure out himself in the process. But the way he acted, it was easy to read too much into. Nothing could be simple.

Not with these two interacting.

But now John Baxter saw that Ioanna began to bounce on her heels a bit, and being the fat kid that he was he was sure he was probably sweating (it was pretty hot in a castle with rows and rows of floating candles and no air conditioning, you know). He had to just answer quick.

Man, these few seconds sure did feel like they went on forever. And not the good kind of forever.

Then she quietly looked away, so he spat it out:

"Youwannacomesitwithmeandmyfriends?"

Memories.Many. Too many. Beck was pretty fucking certain that he was fine with getting away from this place. The walk into the Great Hall was normal. He didn't Want to think too much. Beck had a list of people he was avoiding eye contact with, which wasn't a game he was particularly used to playing.

Students of all ages shuffled in with him, and he sat down at his usual spot at the Gryffindor table. The room was decorated with blue from his sixth year. Gryffindor was to be awarded the Quidditch cup. He guessed that was good enough for his last year.

Ioanna recoiled a bit at the veritable barrage of simple words thrown so forcefully in her direction for such a simple request. She didn't get it yet, but maybe in time she'd understand what this was about.

And things are not so easy to keep straight, when you're that age, and you're not so sure of that yet.

Unfortunately, Ioanna was doomed to several more years of that. Anxiety had a way of setting one back developmentally, and she and Bax were no different in that regard. Too bad social politics conspired to keep either from seeing that when it could have mattered.

And for Ioanna's part, she wasn't really a good listener--or else she might have seen...

She shrugged.

"Sure," she said, nonchalantly.

At least tonight, they wouldn't be so alone.

"Cool!" said John, "Uh...but you don't have to. Pete and David should be around soon. Maybe Siri. Not sure about those two, yet."

He nodded, waiting. Conscience cleared a bit now that he had at least tried. And he was relieved that he hadn't gotten his head bit off.

Ioanna's head jerked back to Bax.

"Dave and Siri!?" she asked, but the reality hit her before Bax could answer. "Oh. Other Dave."

She thought for a second about Dave Jr., and how he seemed to have gotten over her sister pretty quick. She was kind of glad, as she was pretty suspicious of that guy and some of the rumors she'd heard about who he had and hadn't kissed before and after.

Booker caught a glimpse of Beck. The younger boy went quickly after him, sliding in next to him at the Gryffindor table, "Polyjuice... potion." The boy whispered in between breaths.

He'd thought about this in the last few weeks. He talked to a few people, had many help him, ones that didn't ask questions. It hadn't been an easy thing to plan. Now he had one last person to address. The most important one. Lis's brother.

"Yeah," said Bax, scanning the crowd, "Not sure what's holding them up."

Hopefully David and Siri weren't snogging (if they had even gotten to that point--David was pretty mum about the whole thing). And Peter had been barking up Amelia's tree for weeks. He wasn't quite sure why he hasn't gone for it yet. Peter said it had to do with his previous breakup, which Bax could understand.

Bax liked to think he understood a lot.

Beck hadn't expected to be approached by the Hufflepuff. One of Lis's friends, originally one of Billie's if memory served him right, (which it still didn't sometimes.) The Gryffindor turned to the younger boy, having only heard part of what he'd said. "What?"

Booker tried to keep his voice lowered as more people seated themselves at the table, "Polyjuice potion!

The look on Beck's face showed that he wasn't following, boarderline seeming to suggest he felt Booker had lost it. The older boy's hand waved, as it seemed to him there was more that Booker wanted to say. Booker looked over his shoulder for a moment, "Switch places with me! ... Please...

Beck's eyes narrowed, tired of asking the same question over and over again, "....Why would I...?

"I thought... maybe.. you'd want to stay with Billie." One of Beck's eyebrows rose. The suggestion seemed to be sinking in.

"You mean so that you could get away from the situation with your parents?" Beck said in return.

There was a moment where Beck was sure that Book would deny it, but the stubbornness on the younger boy's face seemed to pass, "I figured it would work out for both of us."
