Shiro the kitten lay around lazily in front of the fire, her Snow White fur glowing orange opposite the embers. Other members of Ravenclaw were returning to the common room after a long first day of school. Rom entered the common room, and ran over to his kitten. Noone around him seemed to be paying him much attention, as most were hovering over homeworks and heavy spell books, to engrossed to turn around. Rom had completed his homework in the library earlier, and had found it all too easy. A crack from the fire turned Shiro's head towards the flames. "What is it girl?" he asked quietly. The day had went well, he had made his friends, however strange they were. A crack became a roar, and with a blast of heat, a large book slid from the fireplace. The cover was charred black, and was incomprehensible to read. The inside pages seemed undamaged however. Rom looked around and called out asking who would do such a thing. He found it strange, however, that even in a magical place like Hogwarts, that the book hadn't burned through completely. He thought things burnt the same way regardless of where you were. |

Sleepy, but unable to sleep, for her mind was running itself into desperate circles. In the girls dormitory, Carmen was sitting up in bed, Most Potente Potions open as she reviewed the symptoms of the Polyjuice Potion. Unpleasant wiggling sensation... limbs are numb as they extend... Carmen felt increasingly nauseous, continuously glancing through the dorm, searching wildly for Luna. She had to confide in someone, didn't she? She shut the book open with a loud snap and rubbed sleep from her eyes. Her chocolate brown hair was up in a messy bun, and she was sleeping in a fluffy cashmere over sized jumper and black shorts. Yawning, with her sleeves coming down far over her hands, she wobbled down the stairs into the common room, looking quite as exhausted as she felt. Taking a seat by the fire, Carmen, at first, didn't say a word. As a book slid from the fireplace, she didn't even quite have the energy to question why it had fallen, as her mind was heavy with the dozens of other books she had read in the last forty-eight hours. She seemingly just could not catch a break from them. Glancing at Romulus, she smiled. "No clue. That book is all yours." She yawned and curled up in an armchair, lifting her knees up to her chest as she basked in the glow of the fire. "Don't let anyone else catch you with a burned book. We're in Ravenclaw after all." |

Rom's mind was heavy, but it couldn't hold back his curiosity. The pretty girl had told him to keep the book, and to hide it. She looked far too tired to hold a conversation, but he thought he ought to introduce himself, unsure how to react to this pleasant girl. He'd met a lot of pleasant girls that day. The tiredness had seemed to wash away his nerve, leaving only a boyish confidence. "Yes, Yes I suppose that's right... I'm Rom by the way. Do you know Freya? I think she must be your year, but in Hufflepuff," he hoped the girl would be as nice as Freya and her sister. If she was anything like Professor Wickham he'd run up to the dorm. The kitten poked the book with its paw, and jumped back, letting a small squeal. Too hot, he guessed. |

Carmen stifled a yawn, leaning forward in her chair. She grinned at the first year and his blissful ignorance of everything; she remembered being that young, although two years ago felt like generations. She felt heat rise in her cheeks, and she cleared her throat hurriedly, forcing the building wave of exhausting emotions out of her mind. "Yes, I do know her." Carmen hadn't really had enough patience to deal with Freya, who was sweet but reminded Carmen constantly of a doe caught in bright headlights. "I'm Carmen," added the girl. "When you get to the Herbology greenhouses, you'll meet my mum, Professor Gray." Her lips stretched into a reminiscing smile. "Don't anger the venomous tentacula." Thinking of her mother again caused a large rock to form in the middle of her throat; clearing it, she tried to think of nothing more than the kitten who had just burned its paw. Carmen tried her best not to snicker. She felt an awful lot like that little kitten these days. |

She grinned at Rom in a slightly mischievous way. This was great! Perhaps Freya, Carmen, Elsa and him could form their own friend group... He liked this girl already! "The venomous what?!" he said, slightly horrified. He had read through all the textbooks thoroughly, and hadn't come across it. It sounded rather dangerous for plant studies! He forced down a sniffer at his own joke. Everyone's related to everyone here! he thought to himself. He should be glad he didn't have a parent or a sibling here, so they couldn't tattle on him. But, a pang of longing rang through him. He wondedered whether his mother had any family here... He looked down at Shiro and told himself to make sure to send an owl to mother for one of her burn remedies. They smelt absolutely disgusting but they'd worked a treat. His attention then turned to the charred book. "Diffindo!" he whispered. The cover fell off, and bits started to break from it. He looked at it, slightly impressed by his spellwork. He knew he could do it though, he'd practiced secretly with mother enough times. Suddenly, he remembered his spare French textbook. With a swish of his wand, the cover came off, and with another swish and a tap, the cover attached itself snugly over the unburned pages. He looked up towards Carmen for reassurance, not that he needed any though. Edited by Romulus Igarashi, Jul 31 2013, 02:44:03 PM.

Carmen snickered at his horror and the slight tone of panic in Rom's voice, but she shook her head slowly, indicating that she wouldn't say a word. "You're smart enough. You'll figure it out." She smiled quietly and stared ahead, watching him perform magic; he looked up at her expectantly, but she was much too tired to do anything but smile approvingly and exhale a deep sigh. Once the boy hit third year, he'd understand. Or even sooner... she shuddered. "What's up with that book, anyway?" asked Carmen. "I've never seen anything fall like that. I always assumed the House Elves spent most of their nights arranging them perfectly." |

What in the name of heck is a Venomous Tentacle, he pondered. Well, he was sure he didn't want to find out. However, he would take the Ventamus Tactle over Professor Scaryface any day. Holes had started appearing in his otherwise pristine uniform. He thought about this large book, and a thousand questions raced through his mind. The bookshelves did surround the fireplace, but the angles were all wrong if it were to simply fall into the fire. Shiro started hopping about after being burnt, but his mind wasn't on the kitten. " Maybe someone was trying to hide something? There must be something in this book someone wasn't happy about the entire Ravenclaw House seeing " he said, trying to sound smart. |

Carmen leaned forward, swinging her legs away from her chest as she planted them onto the ground. "Well, why don't we look?" No amount of exhaustion could distract her from this. Yes, it could just be a random book that fell, and it probably was. But why not make an adventure out of it? Certainly this little first year had the same thirst for the unexpected as she did. She moved next to Rom and the book with its brand new cover. "There's only one way to find out, isn't there?" Quickly, Carmen reached forward and opened the cover to reveal the first page. |

Rom shifted uncomfortably as Carmen leant over and turned the cover. Female contact from anyone other than his mother was alien to him. Rom leant in closer to see the first page of the book. The page was stained yellow-brown, and had that all-too-familiar old book smell. Father told me once that all the best books had that smell. Looking at it, and then the girl beside him, he placed his index finger upon the page. Rom jumped back as words appeared from the empty, aged parchment. 'The Clever Guide to All Things Hidden by The One You Know,'. The spider-like characters jumped about the pages one by one. He gasped. "What the-e HECK have we found?!" he half whispered, half shouted to Carmen. The other students around them had vanished, gone to bed or the library, again, he guessed. The fire in front of them roared, and as Rom looked around, him and Carmen were spinning, and he felt a deep just behind his navel. He grabbed for Shiro and then for Carmen's arm. The world went pale blue, then warm black, then cold, wet and grey. |

Carmen let out an audible, "Fuck," as she felt the strangest sensation in her stomach. She was falling headfirst into an open abyss, pulled from the center of her stomach, an invisible rope from around her stomach tugging her down, down, down... she felt sick, spinning, wishing she could turn around and go up the stairs to the girls' dormitories and just go to sleep... By The One You Know... What did Rom know that he wasn't telling Carmen? Maybe he wasn't even aware that he knew it? Her feet fell into the ground, a new ground, with a startling slam. She turned around on Rom, her eyes narrowed angrily. "I didn't sign up for a trip to the circus, kid. Where are we?" |

The ground made a 'squelch' as four feet landed, with Rom toppling over into the dirt. The world kept spinning for a moment, and then stopped. Autumn leaves crackled as Rom crushed them with his back. It appeared they had landed in a clearing in some sort of forest. The place was unfamiliar to Rom, but he sensed something deja-vu about the place. A cool breeze washed over the young students, the early morning air sharp and whistling. The smell of rotting leaves hit their nostrils, but it seemed quite calming. The whole place seemed to soothe him. Rom sucked in a breath, and let it out. He could lie among the leaves, forever. He didn't care. He could forget everything and just lie there, in the circular clearing. . The girl spoke, this place obviously didn't have the same effect on her. Her loss. "Girl, w-why don't you just relax, I mean, just chill." He could feel the dirt in his hair, which had become a mess of leaves and tangles. He looked up, and saw all the trees , swaying gently. How peaceful it is here. He tried to think of a word to sum up what he was feeling, but nothing came. His mind drifted, and he saw that the girl was calming, perhaps swaying, he couldn't really tell. The calmness must have hit her too., he thought.Nostalgia! That was the word. He let the big, heavy book slide from his arms. The forest was so... peaceful! Trees surrounded them in all directions. The graceful branches clung to their little pieces of sky, naked fingers grasping for their bit of the air. He stretched out his arms, convinced he wanted to stay here. He thought half-heartedly about this new place.Maybe it could be a new home? Home. That's a nice word. Home. He'd never had one before. It felt nice. Carmen and him and Shiro could live- Where's Shiro?! Rom spun his head round, and looked all around him. He checked his pockets. She wasn't there. He looked around the clearing where him and Carmen were sitting, but there was no white in the sea of red, orange, gold and brown. "Carmen, where's Shiro?!" he asked. He waited for a response. "Oh!" A deep rumble sounded through the earth, not unlike the ones he was used to when he had stayed in Japan. There! Rom pointed over to one of the large red-leafed maple of sorts, he couldn't really tell. A little white smudge was hopping about among some rocks. As Rom pointed, the ground beneath him to shoot him upwards into the air, the roar of the earth deafened his ears. It wa like nothing from this planet. His cloak hit him round the face, blinding him for a moment. He flew threw the air, with a feeling that it might have been pleasant if it weren't so terrifying. shen he removed it, him and Carmen had landed below a leafless tree, and surprisingly clean and unscathed. He looked down, and sat between his legs, was a large yellow-white skull, grinning toothily at him. The scream he released was less-than-manly. Oh my Buddha, Oh my - What's happening?! He looked frantically around him, arms flying, looking for Shiro and the book. What his eyes fell upon was worse than anything he'd ever seen. A few hundred yards directly behind them something large and grey, like and elephant, was trotting on the ground hissing, with large yellow eyes. He released another scream, and leant over to Carmen, still watching it, and whispered " Dragon" |

There was something familiar about the nostalgia; it was palpable, beautiful, and also a curse, filling her with something terribly like regret as she swayed with the flow of the trees. Nostalgia meant missing someone, meant missing anything, remembering the way that things were before they changed, got mixed up, became twisted into knots that Carmen couldn't get a grab on as her fingers shook... the feeling was consuming, encompassing, beautiful, and horrible. Carmen was ignoring Rom's voice, heart filled to capacity as the world around her held her close. As the ground grumbled, her concentration broke. Panicked, she took a few steps back and withdrew her wand, arm shaking unsteadily. The ground roared mercilessly, revealing the large frame of a... "Thank you for the observation, Captain Obvious," growled Carmen under her breath, eyes locked on the majestic, beautiful and extraordinarily deadly scales of an enormous gray dragon. Carmen was simultaneously fascinated, enamored and fearful. "She's beautiful. Or he. Let's hope it's a he. The she's are always the aggressive ones..." She felt as if she was dreaming and floating through the world; her body remained unscathed despite defying every shred of logic she possessed and, even now, she felt as if she could wake up at any moment if she just simply squeezed her eyes. "Where's the book?" whispered Carmen hesitantly. "Can't we go back the way we came?" |

Rom didn't pay too much attention to the girl. The fact that they could be scorched any moment now was more pressing than determining if the creature was a boy dragon or a girl dragon. However, Rom thought to himself, she has a point. What is the most common cause of female aggressiveness? The beast was at least 20 foot long, with knobbly bits of bone sticking out along its back. The black-grey scales shone like brightly polished flakes of platinum, with skeletal wings flanking its sides, that looked like great sheets of leather that were stretched too taught. "The book? I-I WHERE IS IT?!" he screamed again. The beast was growling, its long snout snapping at the air. Then he looked at its eyes. And then he wished he hadn't. The pale yellow eyes were too big for its head. Scars surrounded them, the slashes starting across the upper eye, and making their way down the side of its face. He then realised by the way it was twisting its neck, that it couldn't see them. "Carmen. CARMEN!" he whispered. "Carmen, I-I think it's blind!" He finally took his eyes off the beast, confident that he was at least remotely safe. Glancing over to his left, he saw the green cover of his French textbook. "There!" he pointed. "HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" "SHIRO!" his eyes were diverted to the far right, in another small clearing. Shiro was hissing at the beast, which had turned its head towards her. Under Shiro's paws were a clutch of knobbly, oblong rocks, surronded by scorched earth. |

Carmen's heart could've stopped right then and there. "Bad little cat! Bad!" She held onto Rom's arm sternly, and whispered harshly, Shh. If the dragon was truly blind, then its remaining senses would be improved. The girl brought a shaky finger up to her lips. "Whisper. Don't speak. It can track us by our voices, and when you take steps, take them lightly. It will be able to feel our vibrations if we're not careful." She glanced back at the cat, overwhelmed by a sense of urgency. Being a third year, Carmen knew more magic than Rom did as a first year, which was perhaps why she remained calmer than he. She edged closer to the cat. "If we get a little closer, I can use Wingardium Leviosa to bring him to us. And then we'll get that damn book." Carmen began to tip toe closer to the dragon, taking great care to take light, small steps. She hardly breathed as she moved, continuously staring at the beast as she did so. Just beneath the dragon's round, scaled and pale belly were a set of shining, sizzling black dragon eggs. The dragon leaned on her hind legs and sniffed them, blowing fire through her nostrils. Carmen and Rom felt the heat flow, even from the distance. "Woah." Edited by Carmen Gray-Winters, Aug 15 2013, 06:39:44 PM.

"A-Alright, but Carmen, b-be careful" he whispered. He decided not to point out the Shiro was a she, but he let it go, under the circumstances. How can she be so brave? he thought, dark eyes jumping between the book, the dragon, and little Shiro. "Carmen!" he whispered slightly too loudly, but he was confident the dragon didn't hear him. He followed Carmen, taking light, shaky steps. He hoped the crunching leaves wouldn't give away their location. "M-Maybe w-we need a d-distraction?" he said, still staying quiet. He let out a small shriek as the dragon shot fire from its nostrils, sending a wave of heat in their direction. Even though it was still far off, the heat was still terrifyingly hot. Raising his wand, he pointed to a dead-looking tree, not far to their left, but still far from the dragon. "Muchitsujo!" For the second time that day (Was it still today? he thought), he performed the Japanese Havoc Curse. The tree burst into flames, the branches ripping themselves from the tree, and with a roar, threw themselves at the ground. What could scare a dragon? Another dragon. He giggled into himself. The curse is stronger here. There's something deeply magical here, including the dirty great dragon. |

"I said to be quiet, not set the goddamn place on fire?" said Carmen, staring at Romulus like he was actually insane with four heads and six eyes. No way. There as no way he was sane, no way at all. But regardless, the dragon seemed frightened of the commotion and flattened out onto its belly passively. "Your move." |

Giggling like a madman, Rom stumbled forward towards the nest and Shiro. Tehehe, this girl is way too grumpy. Don't older kids know cheering charms? She should use one. Oh look, a Shiro! "Wingardium Leviosa!" he cried, still giggling. Shiro detached her claws from the nest and rose upwards. "GOTCHA!" he cried, his eyes widening. The scared dragon hissed at the burning tree, but retreated further, its spiked tail swishing. Oh, what are these little funballs? he thought to himself, looking at the sizzling, knobbly eggs. "Carmy, look at these! " His arms wobbled drunkenly as he leant down. Grabbing one of the largest of the set of seven eggs, he tucked it under his arm and then dropped it. "Oh, poop!" he screamed, as it slid from under his elbow. "Maybe Eggy needs a little restie?" he laughed, and plopped down, covering the eggs with his chest.
