It was with a rough grip that Tinsley held Carmen's arm, guiding her out of Arithmancy and into the Courtyard. In the brightness of the sun, Tinsley squinted her eyes and, huffing angrily, she led the girl to a spot beneath the shade of a large tree. Beneath the branches, Tinsley scoffed, thinking to herself about Carmen's freak elementium mother; it must often get old, seeing your mother sprouting roses and bushes just because. Tinsley paused in front of the young girl, surveying her face, surprised at her ability to show no emotion although Tinsley was sure the little girl was anxious. She was different from her mother in that way; by now, Emma would have surely barked or fought Tinsley. Carmen, however, seemed to take after her father, instead choosing to take in the situation before acting irrationally. Perhaps there was hope for a Gray yet. Ha. Fat chance. Clearing her throat, Tinsley began slowly, "And you're..." "Carmen Gray-Winters," the girl responded, as if on cue. "Ah, yes," smiled Tinsley wickedly. "I'm an old friend of your mothers." |

Carmen willed the stinging in her arm to stop reasonably, sucking back her panic as she forced herself to think rationally. The Inquisitor had a dangerous grip on her, like a snake whose fangs had sunk into the flesh of its prey, and Carmen was trying desperately not to show the pain that she was feeling externally. As Tinsley finally let go of her, the young Ravenclaw stepped away from her; being in such a close proximity with such an unsettling person was almost a bit frightening. Any student would be simply foolish not to fear the eyes that were glaring out of Tinsley's skull. Clearing her throat, Tinsley began slowly, "And you're..." "Carmen Gray-Winters," she responded at once, almost expecting that question, although it was true that Tinsley must have singled her out for a particular reason. Why not Freya, Abel, Primrose, or even James? "Ah, yes," smiled Tinsley wickedly. "I'm an old friend of your mothers." "With all due respect," said Carmen evenly, "I've never heard of your friendship at all." She inhaled slowly and exhaled, willing herself not to show any emotions or betray the calm facade that she had worked hard to protect. Heart drumming against her rib cage, Carmen had a very palpable feeling that she was about to have a few of her questions answered. |

Tinsley snickered at Carmen, whipping out a notepad and quill. She scribbled onto the front of the page and let go; the notepad remained floating, as well as the Quill, which was balancing on its point, ready to write. "So..." Feverishly as she spoke, the quill began to scratch away. "Where were we? Ah, yes. Little Carmen Gray. How do you like Arithmancy?" "Not much," said Carmen resolutely, "seeing as I'd only been in our first class for five minutes before you–er, escorted me out." The quill kept scratching away as Tinsley paused to read what it was writing. Grinning wickedly, Tinsley continued, "And does having a sphinx as a professor make you uncomfortable or fearful in any way?" |

Carmen inhaled very slowly, trying very successfully to mitigate her rough temper. She continued to calm herself rationally, thinking of how much she'd hate for her temper to cause Tinsley to yank on her arm again in such a way. Biting her tongue, however, was proving the most difficult aspect out of all of this. "I am only uncomfortable," she said crossly, "when people unnecessarily interrupt class." Tinsley blinked, pausing for a moment before her tilting her head to the side. She glared at Carmen while maintaining her feigned polite smile, her skin horribly waxy as her smile stretched it taught. "Unnecessary? This is terribly necessary, Miss Gray." "Gray-Winters," responded Carmen, now finally showing a bit of emotion as she raised her eyebrows, distinctly feeling the animosity from Tinsley as she left off her father's half of her surname. "And forgive me, Ms. Carmichael, but maybe I simply misunderstand." She quickly fixed her expression, faking the sincerest of smiles as her wide doe eyes expressed simple, innocent curiosity. "You see, I distinctly remember you informing the school that we..." With a sense of self-importance, Carmen straightened up slightly before reciting, "We should prune practices that ought to be prohibited. I was under the impression, however, that we had done that previously. Doesn't it seem... frankly, inexcusable that the Ministry has stuck its nose into school affairs?" Carmen was staring at the woman's mouth, inwardly grossed out at how fake she appeared to be up close, as if she was molded from candle wax. "Many families believe the government and the school should be kept separate." Carmen was purely speaking off the top of her head and making things up as she went along, but she wanted to get a feel for the woman standing before her, especially since she was already plotting against her.... |

As the quill kept scratching along, Tinsley drummed her fingers against her hips. This was, truly, Emma Gray's daughter; the thought was enough to make Tinsley's blood boil with a fiery rage, especially as she wouldn't shut her little pout. "I firmly believe the only reason any family would believe in such a ludicrous thought is if they are distrustful of the Ministry." Tinsley stepped closer to Carmen and leaned to her height so that their noses were mere centimeters apart. "Do you have a reason to distrust the Ministry, Carmen?" Straightening arrogantly, Tinsley plucked her notes from the air. "I see." She read over the notes quickly, sticking her quill within the pages to hold her place. "And that's all I needed to know from you. Tell Professor Safiyeh I've collected enough information and do not wish to interview her further, won't you?" "You should, however," smirked Tinsley, "be more respectful of authority figures. It'd be a shame to get on someone's bad side." She smiled twistedly at the young girl. "You never quite know what someone can be capable of." Tinsley looked at the girl from the top of her brown hair to the bottoms of her black shoes before turning and exiting the Courtyard. |

Carmen watched Tinsley leave before lifting up her sleeve to survey the finger-sized bruises Tinsley had left on her forearm. Frowning, she now shook with the chills. What did she mean, you never know what someone may be capable of? Carmen thought quietly to herself as she sat in the Courtyard, collecting her emotions and thoughts before she had to return to Arithmancy class and function. It was evidence enough that Carmen was right in suspecting her character, but what was she after? Anxiety pulsing in Carmen's chest, she left the Courtyard and headed back to Arithmancy. |
