Hey guys, a deep and depressing conversation here! Lol. I'm doing a mini-sermon at my Church this Sunday, and I am speaking on Gossip and Bullying. If you guys could help, could you please answer a few questions for me? They don't have to be detailed or personal, or anything you don't want to say, I just want to get some numbers, facts, and examples. Thanks for the help guys! Remember all questions are optional. You don't have to answer them if you don't want to. 1-Have you ever been gossiped about? If yes, what was it about? 2-Have you ever gossiped about someone else? If yes, what was it about? 3-What were the effects on your life when you heard the gossip? What were you feeling? 4-What were the effects on the other person's life that you gossiped about? 5-How did it change you? I think number 5 is the most important one. Anyway, thanks so much guys! 1. Yes, I am gossiped about all the time, in fact most people do it while I am in obvious ear shot, not seeming to care whether I hear or not. It is usually about me being a nerd, a know-it-all, teachers pet etc. But also even if I so much as look at one of the popular girls in my class they say "Oh my gosh she was just staring at me then" etc, even if I only looked for one second. 2. No, because I know how much it hurts me and don't want anyone else to feel that way. Especially at an all girls shool so much gossiping goes on, its ridiculous. 3. A first I felt hurt and just wanted to cry. I thought how could somebody say soemthing so nasty? But after it happened every day to me I got over it, ultimately it made me a better person because I realised that its not something anyone should have to go through and that I will never do it to anyone. 4. I haven't ever gossiped about anyone. 5. Refer to question three. *Hope this helps, I think its great you are doing something like this! I did an internal last year on bullying and it was a real eye opener. Good luck! |

Moved this topic to a more appropriate forum for you.  Perhaps it'll get some more attention this way, too.I guess I can start us off before I go to bed. Unfortunately for the sake of this survey, guys don't tend to gossip. If the questions were such that 'gossiped about' was replaced with 'bullied' then I could answer them all and it'd be quite in depth and personal. But as they stand, here you are: 1-Have you ever been gossiped about? If yes, what was it about? Likely. Don't know any specific examples. Online people find it easy to gossip, so a few examples from this site, actually. From my real life, though... no examples come to mind at all.  2-Have you ever gossiped about someone else? If yes, what was it about? Not really. I suppose it depends on the definition of gossip. I suppose I have, everybody likely has. But I don't spread rumours about people, or find a personal secret and share it. I suppose what I've done in the past is likely tainting other's views of a person because of me expressing my own. Does that count? 3-What were the effects on your life when you heard the gossip? What were you feeling? No really specific examples. Even online, though, I'm always hurt deeply when it happens, especially how the interwebz keeps us somewhat secret from each other, so somehow people who likely haven't the foggiest idea about who I really am decide to gossip - well, that's just silly.  4-What were the effects on the other person's life that you gossiped about? No specific examples come to mind, so no i-clue. 5-How did it change you? Don't think it has much. I'm still me. I guess I try to be cautious about who I tell what. Always have tried to be, though. As an aside: My pastor said once that the Bible equates gossip to witchcraft in that it's trying to control the lives of others through words/deeds that are not of God or reliant upon him. I think that's neat, but I haven't found scripture to back it yet. |

1-Have you ever been gossiped about? If yes, what was it about? Yes, I have. I had a horrid two years in Public School. Eighth grade was pretty bad near the end, and then all ninth grade. I don't really remember all that was said, I actually blocked it out and tried not to think about it. It was all really hurtful, in fact it was more bullying that gossip. I lost a Best Friend I had for four years because she turned against me. It hurt me a lot. The group of girls called my cell phone and left nasty voice mails on my phone, and I was threatened a lot. I really don't know what I did to deserve the treatment, I was always very nice to all of them, so I was kind of wondering what I did. I still don't know. 2-Have you ever gossiped about someone else? If yes, what was it about? I don't really "gossip" about people, only the ones I just plain dislike. I'll share stuff with my fiance and my fiance's mom but that is as far as it goes. Me and my Fiance's mom work together, so we know the people we talk about. It's always people we don't like. Usually, it is just complaints about them, and stuff we've heard. I suppose I do talk about some people to other friends, but it's never hurtful stuff, or stuff they've confided in me in, it's normally common knowledge. As for hurting someone with it? I doubt it. 3-What were the effects on your life when you heard the gossip? What were you feeling? Well, I switched schools and went to a private school for the rest of my high school career. I was mostly confused, because like I said, I really didn't get why I was being bullied and gossiped about. It turns out the gossip continued after I switched schools. They spread around that I was addicted to drugs and a satan worshipper... I really don't get the last part. lol. I dressed...normal, and although I was a little weird I never insunuated that I worshipped the devil.. Weird. I wonder what I did to them? 4-What were the effects on the other person's life that you gossiped about? None. Like I said, I never spread any lies or anything around. It's always the truth, and it never goes farther than the people closest to me. We try to keep that stuff all between us. I don't have a huge social life and I don't much trust a lot of my friends(Bitten to many times), so most of what I say is to my fiance and his mother. I'd feel terrible if I said something that they'd confided in me in, so I keep my mouth shut about stuff like that. 5-How did it change you? It made me the person I am today. I dislike having friends, and I don't care much to hang out with anyone. People annoy me, and I don't confide in anyone except Fiance and sometimes his mother. My closest internet friends though I'll confide in because they cannot spread stuff about me to people I know. I'm obsessed with making myself pretty because if I ever see someone who used to gossip about me then I want them to be shocked about how much my appearance has changed. I used to be really fat, but I've lost weight and look...smashing.  So yeah... they've made me paranoid about how I look. Anyway, I hope that helped a little. It just goes to show you that it can have a longterm affect. I'm happy now, because I have people I can call friends, and a great internet community that does not judge me at all, but as far as making IRL friends I always fear that they'll stab me in the back just like the "friends" I had in high school. |

Rumors went around that I was a w**re and I was somehow a poser when really, the person behind that little stunt went out and copied me a week later.  Another incident happened recently, like three years ago that I was a druggie and "sleeping around" and the people called Social Services to crack down on me and stop my partying ways.  Now at this school, same old stuff. Evil, hating everything, devil worshipper... You name it. 2-Have you ever gossiped about someone else? If yes, what was it about? I've complained about people, but otherwise, no sharing personal secrets and whatnot. *shrugs* 3-What were the effects on your life when you heard the gossip? What were you feeling? To be honest, every incident that came around to me, I corrected it and went on my own way. The girl that called me a poser for lord knows what reasons...I made it known loud and clear that she had the exact same hair and clothes as me and never had she bothered me again. The Social Services incident, I talked to the worker and we laughed about it. So, I could really careless and find it funny that people care enough about me to try to break me down when little do they know that I am really laughing behind the scenes, only making their jobs backfire.  4-What were the effects on the other person's life that you gossiped about? No information available. 5-How did it change you? It didn't. I've come close to death many times and yet that hasn't changed me a bit. Other incidents have but gossiping and stuff just always made me laugh, no matter what it was about. So, gossiping had never affected me and neither has bullying. After going through some incidents, you learn that gossip is nothing more than mere words and compared to those other incidents I have been through, words hardly mean anything anymore.

Thank-you guys so much for your answers. They have really helped me a lot. I've written my sermon now, and am ready to roll, and kick butt! Aleyha-Thank goodness you were able to just let it roll of your back! That's very, very awesome! Leah-I'm very sorry you had to go through that. I know how tough high school can be. I struggled through it as well. Nicolas-You are so very lucky to be a guy! Lol. Thankyou for your help Hopefully things get better, and people stop being lame!Melodie- Thankyou for letting me know. I'm glad you came out of it, and it's made you a better person! Keep going
