*Dusk had arrived at the trading post. It was time for action. Jacob had done his usual fine job in finding a route out of this death trap....for that was what the trading post soon would be....a coffin for Baines and his people. The posters said wanted dead or alive. If the army had their way....it would be dead. Baines and his eccentrics had outwitted the best of them up to this point. Given the opportunity for payback....they would make sure their vengence was fatal.* Sam. *Zachary said quickly.* Pack things up and get ready to move. I want you out of here first. The others...myself included have abilities that will enable us to survive out there....you don't. I want you safe....once we get your throw...I'll have taylor, Billy, Jacob, Anne and the others follow. Your job will be to set up shop somewhere else....a new base of operations. Screw dem bluebellies....they ain't getting you...or any of you. If I gotta go down....fine...but I'm taking taking other with me. She pulled her arm out of his grasp and looked at him harshly. “It’s just like you to assume I was coming. I do have something that will help me survive you know… I ain’t wanted here.” She pointed out. “This is my home, and I give you a place to stay and you think I’m just going to run off with you like I always did.” She waited a beat and huffed. “You’re just lucky I have something worth coming along for.” She said, picking up her clothes trunk and pushing it at his chest, obviously meaning for him to carry it. *Baines did not like to pushed...nor did he like his orders questions. four years at west point....time in the american and later...conferderate army breeded such an attitude. Save for his commanding officer general Lee....he did not take orders from anyone....especially a woman. Like most men of his era...he believed women had their place. And that place was secondary to men. Granted females like Anne...Sam...and this tracker Anne was presently attempting to convert were highly exceptional credits to their gender....but wtill...they were women...and this was a mans world. for her to question him was almost an unheard of act in his opinion. This might be the wild west and all....but it was still the victorian era.....and an officer and gentleman like Baines was a classic...albeit rugged example of those times.* Your home is going to be overun by soldiers. You stay here...they'll string you up for harboring us. Woman or not......they fix the knot on you. Look at what they did to Mary Surratt?? You think they won't do the same to you even if they only think you're helping us? “If you don’t think I could talk my way out of that, then you don’t have much faith in my skills.” She said, looking at him pointedly. “But it doesn’t matter now, I’m gone, and I already have contacts worked out for us on another town. Far enough away where Anne can throw that army off the trail, close enough where we can all get there without trouble.” *Baines shook his head. Sam had no conception. She was slicker than a nickel city lawman's badge....but the army were not half drunk cow pokes winding down after a rustling up a cattle heard. They were not poker players looking for an easy score. These people were well armed....well trained animals.....beasts angered at being outwitted by particularly elusive prey. All her fancy talk....and fluttering eyes would mean nothing to these creatures. They were in a hanging mood....and when a pack of people turned that ugly....especially people who killed for living...they did not care much who got strung up....long as it was somebody.* You're wrong....I've every confidence in your skills. I wouldn't have come to you about being part of this team if I thought anything less than being the best. But I've watched my family strung up for no other reason than they were related to me. I'll not see that happen again. Ever! *He simply nodded at the rest of her statement. Setting up shop elsewhere was the main issue now...and as expected....Sam had that figured out well in advance. Like the other eccentrics....Sam was the best at what she did...and here again wasproof of that.* Now she understood why he was so adamant about this and had a moment of sympathy for him. “Zach… I… I’m sorry.” She said, softly putting a hand on his shoulder before moving past him to ready her horse. She really did have 5 other witty comebacks at hand, but it really wasn’t the time for them anymore. With her horse strapped, and ready to go she nodded to him. “You got a route for me?” Ancient history. *Baines replied...not wanting to rehash the horror he felt when he tried to beat Sherman's army to his home in Georgia....only to find himself a few hours late....and returned to find his family....wife, father, sons and daughter either hanging from the pear tree in the back of the house....or dead after being 'used' by the yankee troops. Baines went mad for a time after that. He carried on a personal war against the yankees even after the south offically surrendered. He was involved to limited extent with Booth....planning the kidnapping of Lincoln.....but refused to be involved in assassination talk. He was a soldier...and there was no honor in slaying a man in front of his wife. Even a dog like Lincoln. Baines targeted those that were involved in Sherman's 'red legs' corp....so named for the red chaps they wore. the red leggers were Sherman's officers and thus responsible for the actions of their men. They needed to die.....and one by one...Baines was picking them off....ending things face to face. But he needed help...hence he recruited his eccentrics....helping them gain wealth....in return for them helping him gain his revenge. Sam's lovely lilting voice brought him back to the present.* Yeah....better than that. I'm gonna escort you out of here myself, Sam. She was very ready to make a ‘gee, lucky me’ sort of sarcastic comment, but really, she knew better than to poke a rabid badger. With his comments earlier, the far off look on his face… it wasn’t any mystery what was going on in that head of his. “Thanks Zach. Let’s get going. I want to give everyone lots of time before day breaks.” She said, gathering up the reins of her horse and nodding to him that she was ready. *Baines had his orse prepared in advance. One of the stable boys brought it out....then he would exit the trading post hide out to make sure he was not caught up in the Army's murderous fury. Jacob's route was known to Baines and this point....and he would get Sam to safety before returning to make sure the others got out as well. Nobody gets left behind in the eccentrics. He wanted it that way. He thought of his men in his old unit as extended family....and eccentrics were no different. They were all he had....and he was not losing his 'family agian. Saddled up....he mounted the impress chestnut colored steed and bode it forward...slowly leading the way for Sam.* “Don’t sugar this up.” Sam said, moving to his side. “I ain’t got any tricks, but this horse knows me, and I know her. We can take more. Go.” She said, looking at him intently. Sam could more than handle her own, and it seemed to be something people forgot, though she had to hand it to Baines… this was a good idea. She’d be good to setup a new base for them, and she’d be able to even negotiate some good prices as well. *Baines nodded approvingly. Sam did not want to be treated with kid gloves....as the hoary old prize fighting term stated. Fact was she was as tough as nails. H needed to remember that and stop limiting her. She knew what the hell she was doing. He had to admit...he was damn proud of her.* You got it, lady. *He said chuckling...and flipped the horse foward....picking up speed. Sam talked a good game....but now it was time to see if she could keep up with an old warhorse like Baines.* Sam grinned and coaxed her horse to a faster pace to keep up with Baines’. Like she said, she was no trick rider, but she knew what the horse could take, and how hard she could be pushed and was more than ready to do both to keep them safe. |
