Carole I'm so happy to see Woody again. I'm sure you are relieved to see him back too ![]() The beginning of the opening for the Sochi Olympics was truly beautiful and so artistic...I was amazed actually...not expecting the awesome costuming and dream sequence. Where did they find that gorgeous little girl? So sweet!!! Of course, they had to add the 'military' aspect too Hope everyone gets a chance to see the beginning of it before all the athletes enter the stadium. |

FEBRUARY 7, 2014 - .Walking, Talk and Carrying Sticks Southwest Florida Cam- Nest Notes for Feb 6. ![]() E4 lifts and carries a stick (dadsjazz) The day on the nest showed more growth, new activities and lots to learn for E4. Ozzie and Harriet spent time on and off the nest with E4 becoming very aware, tracking their moves and sounding greetings. E4 is very vocal with sweet chattering and seems to have a lot to say these days. Dad brought a fresh fish and Mom delivered fresh pine and branches. E4 rushed to see what each arrival was and became very excited when it was something to eat. E4 practiced balancing, standing, walking and wing flapping sometimes with ease, other times looking awkward. Feather growth seems to be happening minute by minute. E4 is growing stronger and even managed to lift and carry a stick. Little E lessons are being learned well from great parents and teachers, Ozzie and Harriet. ~Summary by dadsjazz If you would like to view more pics and videos, please go here. |

Penny - Hope they solve your phone problem soon Enjoy your evening at the theatre Missed the opening ceremonies but I'm sure they will be broadcast again. When I opened the garage door this morning, Woody walked right up to the driveway to say hello, he wanted to come into the garage but I had to shoo him away. He and his buddies got some chala bread as a treat

Aww, Carole it's so good to see Woody again. Penny, how frustrating about your phone problems! I hope they're resolved soon. Cheryl, you and others will be interested in this Crane info from the Loch of Lowes website. Recently a pair of Eurasian Cranes were sighted near there. This species was "once extinct as a breeding bird in the UK and last year they bred in Scotland for the first time in 400 years. They are currently the subject of a reintroduction program in England too." ![]() Sadly, osprey Lady of the Lochs last two years' offsprings seemed to not survive after their migration toward Africa. Their satellite tracking went off line and no word since then. All hopes are that Lady returns this season in a few weeks, which would be a miraculous feat for such a senior Bird. Thank you for your comments on the loss of my once friend. I can't say he was really a friend since he was so mentally unsound and I was technically his carer. We did feel like friends even still. His managers employed my former therapist to live with him and give intensive 24/7 therapy when she wasn't with other clients and the group sessions she ran. That's where I came in, to fill the gaps in her schedule. They set him and her up in a posh Beverly Hills house so she could give him round the clock psychotherapy, but the managers eventually decided he wasn't getting any better, no wonder since he was a full blown psychotic schizophrenic and needed more serious treatment. He once even held a knife, that he kept in his boot, at my neck to help teach me to "trust him". In his ex-wife Susan Strasberg's autobiography, which I later read, he did the same exact thing to her but used the same words using a gun instead! My therapist was grossly remiss to put me in such a dangerous situation, and I was a naive wide eyed novice to have accepted it. Sadly, his managers eventually decided the therapist wasn't helping him and they removed him from her control. I was shattered but had no way to reach him after that, since they formed a shield around what they thought was their "Golden Goose". He never was able to work again but must have stabilized somewhat and eventually went on to have more children while continuing to refuse any need for therapy and abused his body with drugs and alcohol. It's a miracle he made it to 72. A poor tortured soul. Our weather has been so endlessly horrible and depressing, as I know all of you who are frozen and snowed in are experiencing in different ways as well. Wet or frozen: one's as bad as the other it seems. We're not in danger here of flooding like much of the country is, beyond the flooded side roads we have to get to the local villages on, but it's so incredibly demoralizing to have nothing but galing winds and endless rain in the foreseeable future forecasts. No end in sight for the huge circling bands of rain and wind in the satellite images. I'm taking mega doses of Vitamin D for the lack of natural Sunlight, along with other vital supplements, and my daily evening dose of medicinal IP to keep my sanity in check.

The closing of the dream sequence at the Sochi Olympic Opening Ceremony is really spectacular Whoever thought the whole thing up did an awesome job of executing an amazing experience for all I think my favorite part was the Bolshoi Ballet tribute to Tolstoy's War and Peace. The whole segment with the Industrial Revolution was also so interesting and visually really stunning especially with HD. Kudos to them and the lighting of the torch was an awesome ending with all the ![]() CBC is repaying it now and will do so again tonight

Panda Updates![]() Mei Lun Friday, February 7 Since the twins are getting better and better at "shifting" (moving from one location to another, via an animal door keepers open), we've been putting the little family group in Dayroom 2 more. This is the other dayroom that does not contain the infamous hammock. Instead it contains a “teepee” structure that the girls love to climb. Because the optimal place to snooze is at the top of the structure, which is above our heads, it can be a challenge to remove the twins unless they come down on their own. So, now that the girls are pretty good about coming when we call, we've started using this exhibit more often. The other advantage is that it allows the other pandas access to the dayroom with the hammock. A third advantage? It gives the keepers more options when playing "musical pandas" in the morning when we're trying to shuffle everyone to his or her end destination! The downside (why is there always a downside?): in order to get to Dayroom 2, a panda has one of two options – going through Dayroom 1 (the hammock dayroom) or going through the “squeeze.” The squeeze is an area all of our pandas are extremely comfortable with. No, they don't have to squeeze their bodies into a tiny space; the squeeze is actually a cage on wheels inside a tunnel of sorts. When we have to perform physicals that require anesthesia, or when Lun Lun performs her voluntary ultrasounds, or in any other situation that requires more direct contact, we can ask the bears to enter the squeeze, secure the doors, and wheel the whole thing out, giving us better access to the panda. While inside the "tunnel,” the squeeze is not completely immobile and can move a small amount. The grown pandas couldn't care less ... and the twins think this new place is the greatest jungle gym in the whole entire world (as have their big brothers and sister when they were the same age)! They're able to squeeze their bodies and climb all around the area, whereas the adults can only walk through. So needless to say, getting the twins to leave the squeeze has become a little challenging. Even Lun Lun has had a hard time trying to wrangle both kids to follow her. She'll grab one and haul her into the dayroom, turn around to get the other, and before she knows it the first cub is back inside! The most favorite spot is in-between the squeeze and the mesh of the outer "tunnel.” The cubs get really cozy and/or playful and don't want to leave the spot … and poor Lun has no way of getting to them because she can't fit. But don't fret! She never, ever gets stressed, because the cubs aren't stressed since they can very easily get out. I think they like being out of Mom's reach! Eventually the cubs all get over the fun-ness of the squeeze. Unfortunately the twins are feeding off each other's excitement, so it might take a bit longer! Jen W. Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE February 7, 2014 Working Hard and a Change ![]() Juliet's yawn reveals a cub With legal deadlines upon us, we spent most of the day preparing for the 8-day hearing, which starts February 24. According to a tentative schedule, the DNR will present their case the first four days (February 24-27). Our witnesses take the stand the next 3 days (February 28 and March 3 and 4). Their testimony will open some eyes about bears, but Lily Fans will already have learned much of it from the bears themselves. Lynn and Sue will testify on the final day (March 5)—followed by the attorneys’ closing arguments. It all will happen in the Skjestad Room on the 2nd floor of the Office of Administrative Hearings, 600 North Robert Street, in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is open to the public, and we hear there are 100-200 seats, although we haven’t verified that number yet. ![]() Juliet and cub Sunday will be a down day, but will mark a new beginning. We are moving onward and upward with the websites. Both websites (bear.org and bearstudy.org) will be down as our Webmaster switches to a server with 24 processors rather than the present 8. Better service. He says this is “an incredible upgrade.” Once the websites are moved, they will be accessible in the same way they are now. Moving everything is complicated, and we thank you for your patience! Thank you for all you do. —Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield, Biologists, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center |
