![]() Wednesday afternoon, Sue Mansfield, Rogers' top staffer at his Wildlife Research Institute, took the stand and began testimony explaining how WRI collects and analyzes data. Mansfield explained that data gathered by WRI includes the weight of bears as they come to a WRI cabin to feed; geographic location of bears wearing GPS collars; and observations taken from den cams. Earlier Wednesday, the testimony of five residents of Eagle's Nest Township was submitted. None of them believe bears are a problem in the area. This backed up testimony from several of Rogers' witnesses and contrasts testimony last week by several residents who said bears in the area had become such a problem that they wouldn't leave. Mansfield also testified that hand-feeding was done "only occasionally," and primarily to facilitate the changing of radio collars and batteries on radio collars, or to adjust or change batteries for GPS units. Last week, the DNR presented evidence -- in videos, photos and testimony from a former participant in Rogers' "bear course" -- that participants in the class fed bears by hand and, at least in one instance, mouth-to-mouth. The activities happened on the deck, through a window and inside WRI's cabin, which serves as a base camp for the bear course field activities. Participants pay thousands of dollars to attend. Under questioning from Rogers' attorney, David Marshall, Mansfield said mouth-feeding occurred "very, very rarely and it doesn't happen anymore." It stopped after the 2011 courses, she said, in connection with the DNR permit. In 2012, the DNR added restrictions to Rogers' permit that limited the number of people who can touch bears to a small list of named individuals. Mansfield's testimony continued into Wednesday evening after this report was filed, and she had yet to face questioning from DNR attorneys in the stand. When Mansfield is finished, Rogers is expected to testify. ~reporter Dave Orrick blogging at Lynn Rogers Hearing Live coverage of Lynn Rogers proceedings will resume around 12:30 p.m. today, when the hearing reconvenes. |

CAROLINA RAPTOR CENTERThanks to all of our Eagle Watchers this season for your rapt attention to this page and the EagleCam. Today, in lieu of Ask the Eagle Expert, we are letting you know that it is unlikely that the eagle egg will hatch this year. Although we have not removed the egg as to not stress the birds, it appears that the egg was not fertile in the first place. This could have happened for many different reasons, but most likely the disruption from the aviary construction early in the season was a contributing factor. We hope that you will continue to watch Savannah and Derek throughout the year and that we will have eggs again next season. They are still tending to the egg

Rare parrot defies the odds to be hatched from crushed egg that was stuck back together ![]() ![]() Click for story A rare New Zealand parrot has been hatched from a crushed egg that was put back together using sticky tape and glue. Conservation workers at the Kakapo Recovery Centre on Codfish Island, New Zealand, found the egg with its shell in pieces inside the nest of its mother, Lisa, but the membrane underneath was still intact. After painstakingly repairing the shell, and a long wait, the Kakapo parrot chick beat the odds to enter the world. It is the first Kakapo to be born in New Zealand since 2011, and brings the total population of the endangered bird species to 125
