I hope Cheryl and Robert are enjoying their whale watching. What a difference from shoveling all the :flk: :flk: at home :)^

My sister and her husband just got back from their Hawaii vacation a week ago or so, She sent us a pic of them in their winter gear dealing with their :flk: accumulation...quite a shock to their systems after their fun in the sun for two weeks :P

Meet Bertie, the three year old Tawny Owl who is afraid of going outside

Click for more pics and the story

Bertie spent the first two months of his life being cared for by vets after he was rescued. He was a ball-sized piece of fluff when he was found on the ground with infected feet by an organic farmer.

Happy International Womens' Day! March 8th 2014. <3

Carole thank you for the wonderful Eagle updates. :Hugs:

We're having further strife today with an arrogant resident here who planted a line of bushes that obscures the entrance to the road from our lane and has created a dangerous hazard for everyone here when trying to enter the main road, blocking the view of oncoming traffic to anyone trying to turn onto the road. :hair: Ed went to speak with him today and found him an arrogant so and so who even threatened to sway the council's decision on the demolition of our house just because we tried to make him aware of the danger his new hedge extension caused. :hair:  Many other residents have the same concern and we're gathering forces to try to bring enforcement by the local council to make him remove the dangerous few feet of hedge he's erected. If any driver trying to clear his hedge safely and enter the road were hit it would be the driver entering from the side road's fault technically. :hair:

Speaking of "hits" I can't help mentioning the danger of windows to Birds and the precautions people should take to avoid "A BILLION BIRD DEATHS A YEAR" striking windows. What happens to Birds that strike windows. I've recently seen posts on another forum that dismiss an obviously damaging Bird strike with "only a few feathers" as evidence of it, with no concern that it didn't outright kill the Bird. Better to have your "50 windows" unrestricted by annoying Bird hazard decals. :hair: How could people who feign to care for Birds have that mentality? See this link for more: We have great views of the landscape here yet all our windows are covered with Bird Alert decals that even still don't eliminate all of the Bird strikes. :( But they help!

Dr. Daniel Klem of Muhlenberg College has researched this issue since the 1970s. He writes, “Intensive studies at single homes reveal one out of every two strikes results in a fatality.” This means that even if the Bird isn't found it may go elsewhere and die from internal injuries. It's only the ones that suffer a broken neck that die on the spot. :'(

Since Bird issues are on my mind I want to also mention that feeding bread to Ducks is highly unadvisable according to all Bird websites . Carole, you mentioned doing this recently and I know you're probably aware of this info but want to mention it for the good of others who may not know. Dry bread can clog and obstruct the crops of Ducks and other Birds and even lead to death. :8O: We do feed bread to the Ducks on rare occasions when we have nothing else but it's important to make sure the bread is soaked in water first and that it's whole grain bread with some nutrients at least. :BX: Otherwise we feed "Swan and Duck Food" pellets we buy at 12 pounds a bag/per week.

I knew that about the bread having to be wet before feeding it to ducks and geese etc Kris :)^

Sounds like you are just surrounded by never ending 'boors' who are always just thinking about themselves :hair: I hope you can get that person to cut back his hedge for the good of all :X:

Lily the Black Bear – UPDATE March 8, 2014

Warmer Days = Active Dens

Sleepy Holly peers out

With the temperature a balmy 28F, Holly got up and looked out of her den, but the deep snow seemed daunting. Just seeing Holly fuels the excitement of getting to know her better in a month or so.

Juliet and cub

With warmer temperatures the last couple days, Juliet was active without the cubs screaming from the cold. They provided us and the Den-Watchers with good views—and data on eye opening.

Posted Image :clk:
Juliet's 3 cubs

Matson (1954) reported that a cub’s eyes were fully open at 40 days of age and its littermate’s eyes were partially open on that same day (February 12) in Pennsylvania. The only other report we know of is by Gary Alt (1989)—also in Pennsylvania. He wrote, “None of 27 cubs younger than 36 days old were observed with eyes opened, and all cubs older than 46 days had opened eyes. Three cubs were observed with partially opened eyes when 36, 38, and 46 days old. The opening of eyes apparently is a gradual process with variation between eyes of the same individual cub as well as between cubs of the same litter. The state of opening was considerably more advanced for one eye than the other of one 46-day-old cub. Two different litters (36 and 38 days old), of 2 cubs, each had 1 cub with partially opened eyes while the eyes of the second cub were closed.”

Juliet’s cubs are expanding the observed range of variability. On February 22, Den-Watchers excitedly reported eye shine from one of Juliet’s cubs. At only 30 days of age, its eyes were open a slit. We wondered if all of Juliet’s cubs’ eyes would open early. Nope. The 2 other two cubs lagged and are just now opening their eyes.

Yesterday, we saw all three cubs on their 43rd day of life. One’s eyes were fully open. Another’s were still closed, and the eyes of the third were partially open.

Today, with all the activity, we saw them again. The one that had both eyes closed yesterday had one eye partially open. The one with partially open eyes looked about the same.

On another subject, the bears have been through brutal cold this winter. The bitter cold hit on December 6, 2013. From then until the end of February (85 days), temperatures dropped below zero on 72 nights, compared to only 46 and 29 nights during that period in the previous 2 winters, respectively. No wonder Holly burrowed deep in the straw.

We’re still putting our thoughts together on the hearing while we feel thankful for what the attorneys did and your donations that made their work possible. Throughout the hearing, it felt good to know so many of you were there in spirit while supporters who lived nearby were there sitting behind us and giving us encouragement whenever there was a break.

Thank you for all you do.

I'm worried that Carole, since she hasn't started a thread for Sunday, may have taken my comments about bread feeding Ducks as a criticism of her which they definitely weren't!! Carole if this is the case please re-read my words and know they weren't directed at you. If you haven't yet posted on Sunday for another reason I hope every thing's okay and that you're just otherwise occupied and all else is well. You are one of the Hearts of this forum and we miss you when you're not here. :Hugs:
