We have the grosbeaks at the feeder this morning. Yesterday afternoon we had a purple finch visitor. The bird is entirely a raspberry red. We often have house finches with the raspberry-coloured heads. They have driven purple finches away from backyard feeders so we were lucky to see one. My brother posted a picture on Facebook of an eagle in its nest near his home. This is terrific news because the eagles tend to be more in northern Ontario, not southern Ontario, except in the winter when our rivers are open and the northern ones are not. To have them nesting here is a good sign.

My thoughts are with the residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta, and the firefighters who are battling a terrible forest fire. As of this morning almost 90,000 people have had to be evacuated with little or no warning. People were just going about their days when the fires suddenly turned and headed for the city. There aren't many roads to get out so traffic was jammed and people were driving through ashes, sparks and smoke, as you will see in the video. It must have been so terrifying. It's Madness, Absolute Madness Much of Ft. McMurray Could be Destroyed ![]()

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the residents, firefighters and volunteers in Fort McMurray and the surrounding area. I have never seen such devastation occur so quickly, thank goodness everyone got out in time.

Cheryl - Your brother is so lucky to be able to see the eagle nest. It is rare for them to be in Southern Ontario as you said, a great sign that more will follow.

I finally found a video where you can see the dress all lit up and in action. It took me awhile to find a link I could use. Some were on Instagram which I know nothing about. Video of the Dress |

I gave up trying to find my Cinco de Mayo images on Photobucket so will just wish you all a Feliz Cinco de Mayo.
That horrific Ft. McMurray fire even made the top of the news here. It's amazing it hasn't caused loss of life, except they reported two killed in a car accident trying to flee the fire. The Spring Bird activity here has also been full of variety. Ed listed all the types of Birds we've seen in our yard and at feeders and it totals almost 40! Yesterday we saw three Foxes and a couple of Deer while walking nearby. We worry for them since the well to do neighbors all seem to participate in Pheasant hunts (when in season), and outlawed Fox Hunting. I've seen them carrying their "spoils" to their vehicles while it was still Pheasant season. We heard the gunshots from the nearby hunting area. And the landlady mentioned one of their friends was paralyzed while riding on a hunt, which could only refer to a Fox hunt. This is our Pheasant mascot who mainly lives in the wooded area behind the house. He hangs around the trees where the Bird feeders are and gets what the Birds cause to fall to the ground. He does his characteristic call frequently accompanied by stretching up with fast wing beats. Here's a YouTube video of a Pheasant call. He's so tame it worries us for his safety. Our Magpies are still making nest visits but it's impossible to know whether they have a new clutch or if the first one is still unfledged.

Kris, the pheasant is dressed in his bright colours for the ladies I think. I listened to the sound of the call on the video. You and Ed have seen a multitude of birds! Maybe soon you'll be able to see the magpie fledglings if there are any. |
