Good morning!

Michele, great job on the bios for K-10 and K-26. There is a love story there with those two. K-10 certainly did his fair share of exploring the mainland but decided that the islands were his home - so fortunate for all of us. Thanks for sharing their life stories.

Cool plane, Ozzie! Looks like it has a lot more leg room. I'm tired of being squished like a sardine. As Carole was asking, have you received any good news that your mother is improving? How is the unpacking going?

Topa, I am determined to get to the Toronto zoo this summer after seeing your nice photos of your outing.

Contour feathers cover a bird's body, streamlining it for flight and keeping the bird warm and dry. Though they appear to cover the entire body, contour feathers grow only in patches, called pterylae, on most birds' bodies. Contour feathers have a vane, a shaft, and a quill. The vane is held together by thousands of tiny barbs. If the vane splits, the bird can "zip" it back up by pulling it through his beak. To preen its feathers, a bird first oils its bill at a special oil gland found at the base of the tail, and then by pulling individual feathers through its oily beak, each feather is "zipped up" and waterproofed. A bird must preen its feathers often in order to stay warm and dry, and in order to fly.

Thank You Peeps for all of your kind words........I truly take them to heart. K-26 and K-10 have always been my favorites, which made this year's nest all the more heart wrenching for me. It was cathartic for me to feature them this week, and it was very comforting to see the picture of them perched together in this week's Update. <3 <3 <3

Deb, Thank You for the info about the Contour feathers.......I especially like the pix showing the various types of feathers the chicks have as they transition to their regular feathers. This is all really good stuff....... ;) :)^
