We are privileged to be able to watch the miracle that is our eagles.

The IWS cams have allowed us a window into their world.

The fact that we are able to witness the struggle to restore the Bald Eagle to the Channel Islands is humbling.

The dream becoming a reality - priceless.

Please help IWS and the eagles they have been entrusted with through your contribution. With our help the eagles will continue to grow and thrive and take their rightful place in the skies over the Channel Islands.

Eaglepedia Revisited

May 18, 2007

Birds, when preening, will gather a special oil from their preen gland, rich in waxes, fatty acids, fat, and water, and spread it over their feathers to clean them but to also keep them moist and flexible. This action also helps their insulation capabilities and waterproofs them. This action also helps control germs and lice that live on their skin and in their feathers.

http://www.backyardnature.net

and: Bald eagles return and add new material to their nests year after year. Sometimes they build two nests, so they can alternate sites annually, which may reduce lice infestation.

and a little more: Lice have been parasites on birds since the beginning of time, probably even annoying dinosaurs! Fleas are new to the scene of pestering the birds, hopping on and off! The world now has about 8,500 species of birds and 25,500 species of feather-eating lice. Nearly every bird has a few lice, and some have thousands. As soon as infant birds climb out of their eggs, the lice hop on and begin chewing their feathers and nibbling their skins.
