Eaglepedia Revisited

November 5, 2007

Tolerance to cold temperatures: Feathers lined with down protect the skin of the bald eagle. Their feet are mostly tendon so they are cold resistant with the outside of the bill consisting of mostly nonliving material with little blood supply. By trapping layers of air, the feathers protect the eagle from the cold and the heat of the sun. An eagle will change the position of its feathers to maintain its body temperature. In the cold early morning, the eagle will sun itself, ruffling and rotating feathers so that air pocket are either opened to the air or drawn together to reduce the insulating effect. The feathers provide waterproofing and protection and of course are crucial for flight. The structure of the feather makes pliability possible and overlapping feathers can form a dense covering - opened and closed when needed by the bird. The eagle has several layers of feathers with each doing a different job.

A great design feature of the feathers is their ability to interlock! The eagles' feathers allow them to survive extremely cold environments so they do not have to migrate to warmer areas each year. They migrate to available food supplies!

What are the benefits of adopting?

I've been walking my 'hood' for the last couple of days. At the nearest large local suburb 'North Sydney', a building stands at a major intersection corner and I saw inside the building (on my way to my nearest local bank) was this metal statue
taken with the iPhone so poor resolution

Oh the Pelican, the mightly Pelican,
His Beak is as big as his Belican!

(I didnt know this.... )
this poem has widely been credited to Nash as a poem with the title "Fleas", but is actually the work of Strickland Gillilan and was originally titled "Lines on the Antiquity of Microbes." It has been dated to at least 1927, as published in the Mt Rainier Nature News Notes (1 July 1927).

* A wonderful bird is a pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican.
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week;
But I'm damned if I see how the helican.
o "The Pelican" (1910) by Dixon Lanire Merrith is another poem often misattributed to Nash
