Eaglepedia Revisited

June 5, 2007

Part III - The father may barely touch the nest with food, taking off again quickly, but the female may stay on the nest. She probably is not harrassed like the male because of her size and she may be observed trying to feed the eaglet. The female will tear off a piece of meat, holding it to the chick but it will probably not eat much. The adult will soon leave. The male rarely tries to feed the eaglet because they snatch the fish before he is hardly on the nest. The male may have a few bites of the fish before delivering the balance to the eaglet. In the beginning, he could bring the whole fish to the nest and have a bite here an there.

Part IV - The eaglets will spot their parents off in the distance as they approach with food and will scream and whine very loudly. Sometimes, the adults will turn away from the nest, perching nearby before bringing the food to the nest. It is believed that this may be done to entice the young into fledging although others think it is due to the reluctance of the parents who knows what is waiting for them at the nest - "attacking" eaglets!

and did you know - you can be a sponsor of one of the IWS Eagle Cams - yes, it's very easy to do

when you click on the cam link - look to the left and there is a little message inviting you to sponsor a camera - click and all the information you ever wanted to know will magically appear!

you can sponsor for a day - a week - a month! just $25 per day - celebrate a birthday, anniversary, remember a loved one, honor that special person in your life, say hello to your favorite eaglet!

Don't miss out - ^"^ ^"^ ^"^ ^"^ (copying here FYI)

Many of the forum members and visitors, tend to follow one particular nest more than the others or like me at work - sometimes only have an opportunity to observe one during the day, etc.

If you aren't familiar with or haven't recently saved the links to the other nests we can observe online and follow, you can go to IWS Eagle Forum or IWS.org for the most recent links:

IWS Eagle Forum - Cam Link Page

From time to time, Dr. Sharpe may upgrade or have to change a link (although not recently) and these are the two sights that would have the most current links. Both nests have a running live feed on UStream or as the case may be, they also have a slo motion feed that refreshes every 5 seconds.

Thanks all!

The Penguin Parade

Posted Image

Each night at the Penguin Parade, rangers count the number of penguins that cross the beach. We then calculate for the year (July to June) the average number of penguins to cross the beach each night over the financial year.

In 2007-08, on average 636 penguins crossed the beach each night. This was exactly the same as the average for 2006-07 and above the long-term average of 538.

Ozzie - I'm not sure where in Australia, but my sister and BIL on a tour, went to see the Parade of the Penguins. It occurs everyday at the same time (usually just before sunset) and hundreds of them came out of the water and marched onto the beach. They said it was a sight to behold!
