“Beauty endures only for as long as it can be seen; goodness, beautiful today, will remain so tomorrow.” ~ Sappho ~ ![]() The restoration of the Bald Eagle to the Channel Islands can be said to be all that is good in an era that is filled with a rapidly growing population and the expanding depletion of natural resources. The IWS has made it their mission to turn the tide of the decimation of the bald eagle population which declined dangerously during the first two-thirds of the 20th century, and disappeared entirely from the Channel Islands. ............................................................. ![]() Bald Eagles were at one time permanent residents of the Channel Islands National Park. Historical records indicated that bald eagles bred on all islands within the park, with at least two dozen breeding pairs throughout the eight Channel Islands. However, due to the contamination of the waters off the coast of California from DDT, by the mid 1950’s, there were none. ![]() For the past two years the IWS has been conducting the bald eagle restoration on Catalina Island on a bare-bones budget after funding was cut off in 2005. In 2008, funding was restored by combining projects on Catalina Island and the northern Channel Islands into a single Channel Islands Bald Eagle Restoration Project. ........................................................................... ![]() However, you can make a difference in the continued effort to restore the beauty of the American Bald Eagle to its rightful place in nature by contributing Today through June 15, 2009. You DO NOT Have To Be A Forum Member To Contribute. Any visitor to the forum, any observer of the nests, any lover of Eagles, you are all welcome to help support the IWS effort! Trish, Jon and Kathleen, a sweet memorial for your mother, made me smile when I saw the sponsorship, thinking of her dancing with the angels. She is watching over all of you now and is free from pain. Blessings to you. |

Michele, such a gorgeous sunset photo of the coastline on one of the islands, with a very fitting quote and all of the information about the eagles. Two dozen breeding pairs .... all gone. The IWS is working so hard to bring the eagles back. |

Thank You Cheryl and Cathy........you guys are awesome. I have faith in the IWS bringing the BE population back to where it was before the DDT contamination. Thing is, it's going to take a long time and patience........but we're on our way, huh. Today would be the perfect day for a hike. The weather is expected to be in the 90's, and the air is pretty danged clear........good day for taking pix too. I'm hoping to finish up chores and get outside for a little digging in the garden. Every year I plant herbs that I enjoy using in my cooking. Some are perennials and need to be spruced up each year, (Rosemary, Thyme and Oregano), while others are annuals and need to be planted once again (Basil). I think I'll let the cats run around the yard while I'm at it. Kikiyo (Momma Kitty) is an indoor/outdoor cat, but the kidlins are strictly indoor cats. I've been waiting for the weather to improve before letting Lexi and Hobbes explore the backyard......which they have been doing off and on for the last coupla weeks. Chuck and I tend to be a bit over protective though........we haven't just opened up the door and let them out........Nooooooo, we have to go out there and "supervise" them. Do you think this may be an indication that we need to get a life?!?! No doubt...... |

Aaaawwww Penny, Thank You.......you are awesome.......what would I do without you guys to prop me up?!?! I don't know what it is about those little dancing letters, but I am always fascinated by them and invariably end up sitting there watching them bounce around. Lord have mercy, there's no hope for me, is there?!?!....... |
