There is a new patient at WCVEagle #09-0738 ![]() This young Bald Eaglet — the 21st Bald Eagle admitted to the Center thus far in 2009 — was found in a nest in Warren County, along the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, by a team of reseachers from Virginia Tech working on an eaglet banding project. The researchers noticed that the eaglet had an injury to its right leg and brought the bird to the Center. Upon admission, Center veterinarians found that the eagle was thin and dehydrated, with a bruised sternum. Radiographs revealed that the eagle had a mid-shaft fracture of the right leg. The eagle was treated with fluids, pain medications, and anti-inflammatories. On May 21, the Center veterinary team, led by Dr. Elizabeth Daut, operated on the eaglet and pinned the fracture in the bird’s leg. The vets believe that growth plates on the leg bone are not involved and are guardly optimistic about the eaglet’s chances. The bird is currently being housed in the Center’s critical care chamber. Several months of recuperation would be expected. Edited by Artsy Mom, May 22 2009, 09:11 AM.

Regan, so glad that you are starting to feel better. I liked your idea of visualizing an eagle and taking an eagle totem with you during your surgery. Continued thoughts for healing headed your way. I sure do miss the Lemonwood posts in nest obs, but I know you are enjoying a well-deserved retirement. |
