Eaglepedia Revisited

March 20, 2007

The large, muscular feet of a bald eagle are important to the success of their hunting. Measured along its curvature, the hallux, or hind claw, of an eagle can be 3 inches long. When an eagle grabs a fish, bird or mammal, the tendons in the leg flex, automatically drawing the toes tightly together. The hallux and three talons draw together to penetrate the skin and muscle of the prey. Tiny spikes called spicules on the bottom of the toes aid in gripping slippery fish. An eagle can skim the surface of the water, snatch a fish and carry it up into the air!

Don't miss out - ^"^ ^"^ ^"^ ^"^ (copying here FYI)

Many of the forum members and visitors, tend to follow one particular nest more than the others or like me at work - sometimes only have an opportunity to observe one during the day, etc.

If you aren't familiar with or haven't recently saved the links to the other nests we can observe online and follow, you can go to IWS Eagle Forum or IWS.org for the most recent links:

IWS Eagle Forum - Cam Link Page

From time to time, Dr. Sharpe may upgrade or have to change a link (although not recently) and these are the two sights that would have the most current links. Both nests have a running live feed on UStream or as the case may be, they also have a slo motion feed that refreshes every 5 seconds.

Thanks all!

If you don't get over to questions often - make sure you do this morning ......

Peter's answer about what he thinks/does just before he leaves the chick(s) in the nest after banding - well, it'll sure give you a chuckle................

Seal Rock 2009 Banding Day

Posted Image~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Posted Image
The idea of Bald Eagles hatching without human intervention grew from the minds of biologists, of what would later become known as the Institute for Wildlife Studies. It is through their dedication to wildlife, their vision of returning wildlife as it once was before humans endangered their habitat that has become the nucleus of the Restoration of the Bald Eagle to the Channel Islands.
Posted Image~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Posted Image

After having begun, through funding in 2002 by the Montrose Settlements, a Restoration Program which allowed the Institute for Wildlife Studies to begin a five year feasibility study to determine if Bald Eagles could be successfully restored to the northern Channel Islands, in 2006 A-49 became the first eagle to be hatched in the wild on the island of Santa Cruz. Now in 2009, Seal Rock on Catalina, has experienced it’s first hatching without human intervention. This became yet another example of an idea that was developed and put into action.

Does it take time? Absolutely. Does it take intervention? Most definitely. Is it worth the effort? Without a doubt. Because the salvation of life on this planet, rests on the shoulders of mankind.

What's everyone doing this Memorial Weekend?

I'm in the planning stages of my outdoor bird aviary flight.
I think I'm ready to give the plans to our handy man.
DH used to do those projects but he doesn't have the time
to be patient for projects right now.

Tallycat/Pat posted this in CHIL chat this morning and I had to bring it over here as it is hilarious rofl

That description of climbing into an eagle's nest and capturing the eaglet for banding by Jim Spikler is so eloquent. He wrote a similar one about climbing the world's tallest tree.

However, every time I see either Jim or Peter go into the nest, I always have my own running commentary, imaging what they are saying to the eaglet or thinking to themselves (true fiction all the way!). Here's yesterday's:

"Oh, boy, that was a long climb. I need to sit down. Oh, here's a nice spot. Oops! gotta fix my helmet first. I'll just tidy up a bit first. Don't want to sit on anything yucky. Oh, lookee here, Steff, a big stick for your big stick collection. No, no, my big stick collection's full now. I'm into dead, dried out, rotten seagull carcasses. Keep your eye out for one. I look for big sticks for your collection, you look for dead, dried out rotten seagull carcasses for mine. Deal?!
What a view! You know, I'd like to build a house up here some day. Real bird's eye view. Boy, it's nice to stop for awhile after that long hike. I remember when I used to dangle dangerously from a helicopter to do this. Ah.. the good old days! What's this! Oh...my...God... Steff. I found one!! A dead, dried out, rotten seagull carcass! Holy cow, I can't believe it! I'll just put it over here for now. DON"T LET ME FORGET IT! Oh, I just gotta look at it again. My goodness, such a fine specimen. Wonder how much it'd go for on e-bay? Anything for the cause! What? My shoelace is untied - can't be too safe these days...I'll just lean over and tie it...woohoo, Steff, guess what I found? Another big stick! This is your lucky day!

I'll just move up here a little more...oh, hello, Sorry, I didn't notice you there. Come here often? Name's Sharpe, Peter Sharpe. What nice feathers you have. Can I get a closer look? Whoa, you're a big girl, aren't ya. Steff, come here. Look at this fine example of a naturally-hatched, just-recently-removed-from-the-endangered list 8-week old bald eagle eaglet. What are the chances we'd run into one here, today of all days? Here, you take it. I'm just gonna soak in the view. Ah, just move up here a little further and get comfortable. It's a beautiful day in the neighbourhood, la la la la la la la la la ... Just gonna lean back on this lovely white rock. Wonder what kinda rock this is, all white 'n' stuff. Have to ask a geologist some day. Oh, hello, sorry, I didn't see you there at first. Name's Sharpe, Peter Sharpe. Come here often? Messy spot, but what a view, eh? Oh, golly, I can't believe this - another big stick for Steffani's collection. She's making out like bandits today. I'll just disentangle it, and slide it slowly and surreptitiously behind my back...oops! did I just pretend to accidently touch you with this stick in a thinly disguised attempt to manoeuvre you 5 centimetres closer so I could...GRAB...YOUR...FEET! Whoa - you're a feisty one! Here, just fold in your wings - I got folding doors at home just like that.
Look, the view's even better over here...come with me and I'll take you places you've never been before.............
