Hello, peeps.

Well done, Michele, on your presentation of the SR banding. K-90 is a cutie, just like his big brother, Gulliver, was. You covered all the restoration program information very well.

Happy birthday wishes to Sharon! I posted your card over in the CHIL forum. Hope you are enjoying your day!

Looking forward to seeing the pictures and reading all about the eastnester gathering. Have fun! I'm trying to finish up my gardening, didn't get much done yesterday - banding event was much more important - I have my priorities!

Enjoy your Saturday, everyone. Would like to help with nest obs but I really have to garden first, several flats of flowers still to be put in pots and flower beds. That was one of my retirement wishes, to spend more time in my garden. Somehow the eagles have moved to the top of my list.

Backyard birds so far today: hummingbird, robin and baby robin, female red-winged blackbird, chickadees, male and female cardinals, nuthatch, male and female rose-breasted grosbeaks, American goldfinches, blue jays, chipping sparrows.

What does everybody else have? East coast birds, west coast birds, inquiring minds want to know!

Hi Cheryl :}^

I have two feeders up in our Mesquite tree. They are about eight inches across oval with a perch all the way around for feeding.

I have sparrows, doves, a couple of pigeons who wander in and catch what is dropped on the ground, and about six Great Tailed Grackles. The Grackles are so funny. The males with the big tails will fly in and make a perfect landing on the little perch around the feeder, and due to his momentum - and the wind - he will start the feeder spinning. His big tail acts like a sail. rofl I love their vocals too. Hoping more birds show up. I have to refill these feeders once every day or two. If I go out and they are empty, the Grackles let me know!

It was one year ago yesterday (May 22) that our Buddy was removed from his nest and transferred to the Wildlife Center of Virginia for care and treatment of avian pox.

Open Letter from Ed Clark

It has now been one year since we first admitted and began to care for the unfortunate eaglet from the Norfolk Botanical Garden. While the case has been challenging and often times frustrating, it has also been unique in several ways. Most people who have followed this case over the last twelve months know about the medical issues with which we have struggled, but that is not what made this case such a wonder. For us here at the Wildlife Center, what has been the most amazing aspect of this case is that this little eagle was the only one of our more than 52,000 patients over the last 26 years to come with its own fan club!! While every difficult case brings with it a certain amount of pressure, having literally tens of thousands of people looking over our shoulders and following the developments in this case on a minute-by-minute basis has been a whole new experience.

As with any case, we have done our best, and we continue to do so. We have tried to be candid and honest with all of our reports, even when things have not gone well.

The generosity, understanding, and loyalty shown to this little bird by the NESTIs, and all the others who have been so committed and invested in this one small creature, have taught us a great deal, and sustained us as we have continued to fight the uphill battle to restore this eagle to health.

While we are still unsure if the little eagle will ever be able to enjoy the life in the wild to which he was entitled, he has already served his species and all wildlife well by being an ambassador for all creatures who need human help to survive. He has introduced us to many new friends and supporters, and has helped introduce many people around the world to the work of the Wildlife Center of Virginia. In many ways, the case of this little eagle is a sad one, but we remain thankful for all the good that has been done in his name.

With best wishes and gratitude,

Ed

We have beutiful Cardinals, Robins, Downy Woodpeckers, Woodthrushes, and Bluebirds, wich are becoming more and more rare. We have worked for about 5 years to build up a local popelation of bluebirds, and it looks like we're suceeding!

Hi Cheryl and Carole, thank you for the compliment.........you guys are such a sweethearts.........you guys are also the "Graphic Mavens". Hmmmmmmm, that sounds a bit racier than I had intended....... rofl rofl rofl

Marti, I love your description of the male Grackle.......that was hysterical. rofl rofl rofl

Cheryl, you're absolutely right about setting priorities.......and Bald Eagles have GOT to be at the top of your list.........I'm with ya all the way on that one . Last year on one of the banding days there had been a brush fire near my home in El Dorado Hills. There were helicopters flying overhead doing aerial water drops and fire engines screaming in from a number of different directions, but I couldn't be bothered because at that same moment, the WE chicklets were being handed down for banding. I mean, it's not like brush fires around here are a once in a lifetime event.......we have them every year!!! :<:: rofl rofl
