As the eagles began to return to the Channel Islands, assisted by the tremendous effort of IWS, it became apparent that one person could only cover so many nests and roaming eagles and of course two or three could only do a bit more! Eagles are elusive and the mission of a juvenile is to wander for several years before settling down, making observation and research, difficult at best.

Posted Image

Cameras were introduced to the program to assist the biologists in those necessary observations so they would know what was happening in the nests - incubation, hatching, feedings, food drops, development and yes, even :blsh: !

Posted Image

However, this was no easy task given the terrain, the placement of the nests that have so far been discovered, the lack of electricity to run the equipment, the elements that the cams are subjected to day after day (including perching eaglets), and just the logistics of getting the live feed to a computer so that it can be observed by the biologists and now sent out around the world for us to view and help with the observations!

Posted Image Posted Image

This is no small effort! Equipment must be brought to the site and precariously perched on a rock outcropping, wires hooked up and protected from the air and wind and water (and birds), the dish turned just right so that the transmission can make its way to the mainland 26 miles away and then sent all the way back to Avalon AND then sent out to us. It's difficult at best!

But the rewards have been tremendous - it has given the biologists more time to be in the field making personal observations and locating more eagles and nests, it has allowed the Cruzers to assist in nesting observations, it allows the IWS crew to have a record of hatching-feeding-growing, it has allowed children in schools around the world to have a personal experience with the bald eagles, and most of all, it has brought all of us together for one common goal - to help the eagles come home.

Posted Image

It does come at a cost though but it is truly money well spent! Thank you IWS and all who make it happen - every single day! :**:

Cruzers make it happen.....

NEW Eaglepedia

Jann had come across this some time ago and forwarded it on to me and since we've spent a couple days revisiting talons - I thought now would be a good time to share it with everyone:

By the way - the east coast cruzers have discovered a new disease isolated to cruzers (probably) -

Binoculitis

it is described as tired vision from holding binoculars against cruzer face to watch tons of eagles for an over extended period of time - also may suffer from extremely tired arms and shoulder pain

no known cure!

still healthy - no symptoms visible ...

Posted Image

onset of early binoculitis - see how they are all resting their arms on the pointed top of the fencing! :o .....
