Oh, YOO-HOO.... Miss Eaglepedia .... on the site for the WeeBeanies it said the following- is this true? I know when I was rehabbing a towhee that crashed into our windows (flew INTO the house) and 'broke' flight feathers, the vet (who was the vet for Wild Animal Park birds) extracted the flight feathers on the other side to match so they could grow out together even though he was 'confined'.... "When we lose a feather on one wing, we also lose a matching one on the other wing so we don't lose our balance." |

Gosh, Teacherlady Regan aka spiritfox is having her 5th eye surgery tomorrow. Maybe everyone can send her a Get Well email, she is being strong, but it has to be so hard for her. She is too young to be held back from the things she loves.. :soar:

G'day Friends, Cheryl, thanks for finding about about M F Loon, I did a little research too... the Male IS larger than the female! How can one determine the difference between the male and female loon? You can determine sex in some cases. For example, only the male will yodel. Also the male is usually larger than the female which is sometimes apparent if you see the male and female of a pair side-by-side. Otherwise you are right about needing to look at internal organs or by doing a blood test.[\big] http://www.mercerwi.com/loons.htm and did you know... A pair may mate for life, although banding studies have shown that loons will sometimes switch mates after a failed nesting attempt and even between nesting attempts in the same season.[3] Male loons appear more faithful to breeding territories than to mates; Male common loons produce a territorial vocalization called the yodel. Each male loon has a characteristic yodel that is stable from year to year and differs from that of other male loons on other lakes (perhaps that is what the writer was referring to bc I see no comments about FEMALEs 'yodelling' Now that is unusal, doncha know, )http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/04/0411_060411_loon.html This article is much more technical http://www.physorg.com/news124120523.html |

Somebody needs to wave a fish at that guy to get him to come back on the nest. Seems sad that they are getting closer and closer to leaving us already. Ozzie, thank you for the loon information. Yodelling Regan, thinking of you with your eye surgery again. Hold tight to your eagle totems. The Cruzers will be with you, too. I hope this is the last one for you.
