Eaglepedia Revisited May 16, 2008 In general, juveniles have feathers which are narrower and more sharply-pointed at the tip. This can be particularly visible when the bird is in flight, especially in the case of raptors. The trailing edge of the wing of a juvenile bird can appear almost serrated, due to the feathers' sharp tips, while that of an older bird will be straighter-edged. The flight feathers of a juvenile bird will also be uniform in length, since they all grew at the same time. Those of adults will be of various lengths and levels of wear, since each is moulted at a different time. ![]() adult - clean line of feathers ![]() juvenile - not quite so neat Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

Yes, Michele, I like the way you incorporated the most recent Banding pics! I'm back from Canberra, it was COLD down there, I didnt take enough warm clothes and ended up buying an extra sweater. Anyway, I went to the zoo which I've never visited before.... I didnt know it but Canberra Zoo has WHITE LIONS! 5 of them.... The five brothers from the one litter and an older half-brother were bred at Mogo Zoo on the south coast and joined Canberra Zoo in Dec08 Apparently there are NO wild white lions left. White lions are all but extinct in the wild with no sightings over the past 10 years. About 300 of the lions are thought to exist around the world in captivity. http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/lion-brat-pack-rarity-earns-pride-of-place/1395891.aspx The Lions are located in what I thought was a small grassed/tree'd enclosure next to the Lions. By small, I mean there are 5 of them, compared to 3 Lions in the same size enclosure. Anyway, they seemed happy enough and more room than Lions have in both Melbourne & Sydney's Taronga Zoo. Their names are Kimba, Delilah, Millie, Sabi & Marjan. Sabi & Marjan were born here in 2003. Mr & Mrs Lion ![]() ![]()

One of the features of this zoo is that you can 'feed' the Bengal Tiger. It is a retired show tiger from Dreamworld (an adventure theme park in QLD). this fella's name is Bakkar. He is a carrier of the white tiger gene. he is beautiful! Lining up to feed Bakkar ![]() Through the fence with tongs! ![]() A drink after the snacks ![]() Close up ![]() Hmmm, my tummy is full now.... ![]() Relaxing ![]() There is another Tiger separated by a very tall fence right next to Bakkar, and over the fence is a viewing platform which is how I got these great pictures. This is a a male Sumatran tiger, named Berani. The Zoo "hope to find a partner for him in the near future." ( I wonder what Bakkar will think of that?? ) ![]() Both Tigers had really spacious nice enclosures.... this picture only shows about 1/5th of the area. ![]() Sticking his tongue out at me... ![]() ![]() I love the way he is Camouflaged in the leaves ![]() Something intrigues his sense of smell

Two DINGOs were getting ready by the keeper to go for a walk. Very tame, just like a dog. In fact, the keeper said there are no 'pure bred' dingos anymore, the highest level is @95% of which these dogs are.... interbred with domestic dogs. Oh boy, where we going today? ![]() Getting a pat from the kids ![]() Nala and Jimaula ![]() Zebra Family and a 2-week old young'un! ![]() Baby have a drink ![]() Something for Lala

Ozzzie, Thanks for all the great photos from the Zoo. Looks like you had a great time even tho it was cold. I hope they find some female WHITE LIONS for all those male WHITE LIONS so they can keep the species going. Ozzie, I snagged your peacock and brought it over to CHIL for lala. Thanks Jann and Dave for sponsoring the Cam's for the NAC.

I'm definately getting some beanie wing blings. Hand crafted by Steff.. I donated to the NAC on the 12 month contribution program so I could afford all the other blings that come available. |
