Eaglepedia Revisited:
(questions about A-35 posted the other day so I had pulled this out - so that folks don't miss it - I'll repost today!)

February 5, 2007

Once eagles have paired off and courtship has been completed, they must agree on their nesting site. The bald eagle naturally will return to the place of its first flight (fledged) so one of the pair must agree to the new home. Scientists cannot predict which fledging site will be selected by the pair but it is assumed there is mutual agreement between the nesting pair.

Each season the breeding pair will lay eggs (a clutch) which are protected and cared for by both parents although the female will assume the major responsibility for the incubation period (35 days). Once hatched, both parents will alternate the duties of hunting and caring for the young who will remain in the nest for about 3 months.

Where to go to build their nests: As breeding season arrives and a mate has been chosen, the bald eagle pair will return to within 75 miles of the site of their original flight (fledging), agreeing to return to the original home of the male or female eagle. Exactly how this is decided is not known, but it is guaranteed that the pair will return to the fledge site of either the male or female.

The fact that they DO return to the sight of their first flight has been a key factor in the recovery efforts to restore the bald eagle population throughout the US. Scientists learned that they could transport eaglets or eggs to different locations and as long as the eagle did not become dependent on their human caregiver, they could be released in a suitable habitat to return in 4-5 years to nest and raise their young. Using this principle based on fledging has enabled scientists to restore bald eagle populations even in places where bald eagles had not nested in over twenty years.

Just like most other bird species, the female ealge will select her partner. With many species, the male will have an established territory and will advertise his wares with displays and song with the female then making her choice. Not so with eagles, they will pair at around 4-5 years of age during the time when the immature eagles are interacting with each other (like our girl Cruz - living the life right now just hanging with other eagles). Study based on osprey research, suggests that the male brings his mate to his natal geographic area (where he fledged) and she then makes the final nesting tree selection. Theory says that since the male is the prime food provider during the nesting period, he makes the territory choice based on food availability. Old nest trees after, longs after the original nest has disappeared, may be used again probably because the territory was recognized by the male - food availability but it would seem that the female is looking for strong limbs to support the nest, easy access and good visibility.

It would seem that they generally pair up while wandering as a juvenile or just hanging out. I've read that established adult pairs do not winter together - but go their own separate way and return when it's breeding/nesting time each season. Of course that's not quite the case with the Channel Island Eagles cause they have great weather and year round food supply. So guess it depends on where the eagle has its territory as to exactly how the hook up comes about!

Topa, just saw your beautiful photos of A-35 that you posted in chat last night at CHIL. You captured Her Highness so well. She seems like a serene and regal ea-gal. I loved the colours in her feathers. :><: :clk:

Marti, thank you very much for the PH cam sponsorship and for the inspiring dedication.

Carole, glad that you and Alan were able to watch Emma and Casey in their respective plays. Somehow despite all the glitches the children always rise to the occasion and the families enjoy the performances no matter what.

We had a bad storm last night so I stayed off the computer. Sorry for all the catching up!

Deb - Congrats with your 2 new keets. How is Moty dealing with the intruders?

Cheryl - In between plays last night we went to DS's house for a quick dinner and when we were going back to the theatre, the rain, thunder and lightening was so intense. DS said when he was driving, hail was pelting the windshield. We headed for home about 10:00 p.m. and the storm was over, glad it was as we were in Newmarket.
