Hiker, other than a wreath on the door, my chicken house is pretty plain... I have been planting roses and bougainvilla around the sides this past week and hopefully they will climb up and over the top... a little more shade for them in the summer... and it could use another coat of paint on the door....(getting inspired here) |

TOPA ... I used to hand raise Peach Face ... It wasn't my intention when I was given 1 adult female after becoming fascinated years back with one who sat on the shoulder (all day) of an artist that exhibited at the Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival. I subsequently learned that they are not the easiest to train and that it must be begun while quite young and that it's virtually impossible to determine the age once their beak turns from the baby black color to adult normal (at 5-6 weeks, as I recall) and they are not offered for sale until after that so one might be purchasing an advanced age bird. My female, 'Sundance' was 'bonding' with a white keet, 'Moonbeam', and, of course, getting frustrated as I had to keep removing eggs that were 'going nowhere'... then she started feather plucking and I decided it was time to get another lovebird and put her out of her misery. I found it was expensive to have them 'sexed' and a guy at the petstore came up with what was a very practical solution.... bring her into the shop and we'll put birds in one at a time until she 'accepts' a partner as females don't exactly 'share' well with others of the same gender.... one after one she squawked until she finally sidled up to her chosen mate who went home with us. Her new husband was, naturally, named 'Butch'. For the year or so that I was 'raising' these guys (until I ran out of friends that would love and care for them) I spent hours and hours laying in an empty bathtub with the glass doors forming the enclosure with clutch after clutch (usually one, maybe two eggs) of new chicks sitting on me, hopping on me, and flapping and then moving on to real 'training' of hop on stick, then stick to stick then stick to finger then finger to finger and etc. I got a LOT of reading done and they made the most loving little pets ... even after pairing up with mates of their own! Loving cats as much as I do, I gave up the birds eventually as it was, in my opinion, not fair to either keeping them isolated from one another at all times which meant I had to split MY time. I lived in a place where the cats went out in the morning and sunned all day and the birds were allowed to 'fly free' in the house and at night, the birds went back to their cages and the kitties came inside. When I moved to a place that had more 'wildlife' as well as closer car traffic, my cats moved inside exclusively and eventually the lovebirds moved to a loving home with an AVIARY ;-) |

Nancy - So sorry to hear about Bandit. We have all had to make these difficult choices but they are the right ones as heartbreaking as it is.

Hi Joanie, Lovebirds are the cutest little pets, and if hand fed they are very gentle birds. If left to be raised by each other their bite is like a pit bull, they will not let go. I have both kinds, but they get along together. I started with two, a pair, peanut butter and jelly, and now have 12. Two of my birds escaped from other peoples cages and found our birds and came inside through the window. |

The electricity went out in Ojai so I ran some errands. I need to order some blings for the new beanies I'm buying for the grandkids. Carole, I'm thinking about making the grandkids IWS members as a family, so I can send them home with a nice photo with the membership for their house. I have a photo moment idea with beanies, wing blings, t-shirts and of course taken at the Cruzer picnic location... I thought all that should be around a nice picture frame like you've created. |
