Eaglepedia Revisited June 27, 2007 The 1st flight can be impressive as the eaglet flaps and glides reasonably well. Landing - that can be something else. A young eagle was spotted perched on a branch and sat there for 7 1/2 hours whining constantly but doing little else. The parents ignored him and flew directly to and from the nest, the female bringing fish for the sibling who gobbled it up, the perching eaglet whining even louder! Apparently he decided enough was enough and he launched himself cruising past the nest, crashing into the canopy of a tree. He was observed hanging upside down, holding onto the limb with one foot. The adult male flew in, calling loudly, and perched above his offspring. The female circled above the hanging eaglet calling out loudly and after several minutes, he released the branch and fell to the ground. He appeared to be unhurt and the next day was found atop a small tree near the nest, his crop bulging from a recent meal, none the worse for his experience! NATURE ... talk about a 'labor of LOVE' !! Great Job! And a powerful reminder of what has transpired in the 3 years since a handful of us lucky viewers saw Jim Spickler climb into a nest on remote Santa Cruz Island.

Hey, ADK, I was just thinking about you. Are you on break from school? When are you going to your cabin this summer? Yes, The chicks are growing soo fast. I hope they stay around the nests for flying lessons. I love watching them crash land into the nest..

Topa, I work all year round, with summer hours, - Fridays off. but there's very few faculty and very few students on campus. Summer classes are pretty small student wise so it's really really quiet here.By the way things look we won't be at the cabin until our vacation in July. I miss it but we have so many things going on or DH ends up working most of the weekends. So......... Vacation is only three weeks away. I'll be away from all of you for almost the whole month. I hope our eaglets stick around a bit too. |

ADK, I'm going to miss you when your gone! We are looking forward to seeing my son and his family for two weeks in August. That's our vacation this year. We're planning to stay in Ojai and have Beanie Eagle Summer Camp at Lake Casitas home of the Cruzer Picnics...same spot. I sent DIL some photos of the last picnic and she thought the spot looked like so much fun...DIL made this word photo for us. ![]()
