Eaglepedia Revisited July 11, 2007 Juveniles eagles have similar coloring of feathers as their parents but lack the precise pattern of the adult and is often confused with the Golden Eagle species. However, the primary flight feathers and tail feathers are several inches longer than those of an adult which make him appear larger than his parents. The longer feathers provide more surface area which helps the young eagle while they learn to fly. The adult has a white head and tail with a dark body (around the age of 5 years). This change in plumage can happen at 4 years of age but you may occasionally find an adult with a dark head at the age of 9 years! Once they molt to the adult plumage, that is the color they will remain throughout their life! ![]() Young Cruz - juvenile in flight - juvenile example - K10 & 26 (adult example - discussing who gets to stay on the nest) Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

![]() Pat & Roy (The Cumbrians) generously provided a DVD to IWS, a pictorial record of the 2006-2007 nesting season. "The 2007 nesting season of the Bald Eagles of the Channel Islands has drawn to a close. Through the efforts of many, we have had the opportunity to watch three Bald Eagle nests - West End Nest (the triplets: Earth, Wind & Fire) and Two Harbors Nest (the twins: Sol & Luna) on Catalina and of course the Santa Cruz/Pelican Harbor nest - Limuw! Moms and Dads arriving and arranging sticks and fluff during nestorations; the laying of the precious eggs; the removal of some to be incubated at the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS) nursery and then fostered back to the parents; the hatching and nurturing of the young eaglets; the wingercising and eventually the fledging of those young Eagles! We've all shared in the joys and the despairs and thru the efforts of lots of the Eagle Forum Members, photos have been captured and video clips posted to document the 2007 nesting season and assist the biologists in their restoration efforts of the Bald Eagles. And includes a special bonus: "Memories of Our Time Together" - featuring A-49/Cruz! AND a special tribute to A63/Limuw!" For a small donation, you can own a copy of this collection, featuring the adult eagles that we know and love - and if you were viewing the cams at that time, a look back at the chicks of that season! If you are new - it provides a look into the nesting season of the Channel Island Eagles. Click on the photo above for more information. BONUS: If purchased by 6/15 - you can ask for NAC credit!

Bird Aviary update...We sure love our updates don't we... I exchanged the roof shingles for a new color but Eddie didn't get that far. He did do the catch door, so I can walk in without any of the birds escaping.. That was time consuming. He also started the white trim, he's not finished with that either. I think he will finish the whole job tonight.. DH is starting to like the avairy.. funny how some people just need time to adjust to changes. I have a metal American Bald Eagle that I am going to hang on the side of the Aviary..Fun! ![]()

Watching the TH pair is such fun - 87 seems to be all wound up today for some reason. However, it's quiet time - up on the rock - down from the rock - down to the porch - just hanging out! Need some food to get some real action. Oh well - will keep an eye out. Need to go over and check out WE pair for a bit too.... How's everyone doing - lots of things going on with summer kicking off. Lots of vacations - family visits - fun fun fun! Enjoy your day! WOO HOO |

Topa Topa, I love my necklace too. Still waiting for the earrings to match. . . I love your Aviary. What kind of birds will you keep there?? We have a thunder storm heading our way. I can hear the thunder in the distance. I wish you could hear the symphony of song birds here right now. I think every song bird in our area is here. The sound is amazing.

Here's Buddy![]() UPDATE: June 10, 2009 by Dr. Elizabeth Daut, Veterinary Fellow, Wildlife Center of Virginia During the week of June 1, the Center rehab staff noticed that #08-887 seemed to be a bit disinterested in his food. Dr. Elizabeth Daut also noticed that the bird’s upper beak seemed to be a bit too long, which might have been causing some discomfort. On Saturday, June 6, the eagle was brought into the clinic; Dr. Daut and the vet team trimmed a few millimeters from the tip of the eagle’s upper beak. Since that dremmeling, #08-887 has continued to be a somewhat “finicky” eater. While he devoured a quartered rat given to him on Sunday (June 7), he has been less interested in mice meals the past couple of days. The Center rehabbers plan to tempt him with a fish this evening. Eagle #09-1091 ![]() This fledgling Bald Eagle — the 24th Bald Eagle admitted to the Center during 2009 — was admitted on the evening of June 9. The eaglet was found on the ground beneath its nest in Stafford County, near the Potomac River. The Center veterinary team found two old scabs on the bird’s legs (likely puncture wounds from siblings?) and has taken blood samples. Pending additional information, the eaglet will likely be moved to an outdoor pen soon. |
