EAGLEPEDIA REVISITED July 18, 2007 During a molt and when in the nest incubating eggs or brooding their young, the bald eagle will increase their preening activity. Insects and mites that bother eagle in the summer aren't as active in the winter so preening tends to be more of a warm weather activity. During the short winter days, Eagles spend their time feeding, leaving little time for preening! "Majestic Eagles" ![]() AND July 12, 2007 Diet, latitude and many other factors will affect when a bald eagle will molt (shed old feathers for new). Eagles in Canada begin molting in March or April while eagles in Florida start their molt in November. In the annual molt for an eagle, it will not replace all of its feathers - most body feathers along with some wing feathers are replaced but not the larger flight feathers. Nearly all tail feathers are replaced although not usually all at the same time. The large flight feathers are replaced very slowly over time and only a few at a time, often in pairs - one from the same positiion on each wing otherwise the eagle would not be able to fly and vulnerable since it could not hunt of defend itself. "Majestic Eagles" Eagles molt in patches, taking almost half a year to replace feathers, starting with the head and working downward. (http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle-facts.html) ![]() on my recent visit to see Pimu - she is molting - here's one of her feathers before it was gathered by Steffani to be sent to the repository ![]() Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

IWS Eagle Cams Reaching Out ![]() IWS Eagle Cams It's like Thunder - Lightning.. The way you love me is frightning! ![]() IWS Eagle Cams It's No Secret http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gteI3UYhOU4&feature=related It's like Thunder - Lightning.. ![]() Teacher Lori Axelrod-Ngo runs the post-secondary special education program at Newbury Park High School, which is designed to prepare the students to move on to the next stage of their life as adults. She said the live link to something happening out in the world is valuable to her students. “Anything real life makes it more meaningful to these students. You know, things that you and I take for granted in our daily lives are often very difficult for them,” she said. “I have developed observation sheets, and what the students have to do is to determine who is on the nest, the time they saw the mom or dad at the nest, the proper day of the week, and then answer questions about what is happening, so it allows them to answer the who, what and when questions in a more meaningful context,” Axelrod-Ngo said. Glenn Goulet, a Los Angeles County Fire Department captain, joined his 20-year-old daughter, Stacey, for the program’s end-of-year party Wednesday and said monitoring the bald eagles has been a great idea. “She can’t comprehend the whole thing, but she’s mesmerized by it and watches it,” he said, explaining that his daughter is at the developmental stage of a 2-year-old and visual learning works well for her. John-Michael Pettis, 18, proudly showed mom Patsy Pettis and grandmother Ursula Walker the Internet feed on the classroom computer. “It’s really great for people to be able to see video and to see how the babies are,” he said. “My favorite moment was when they were being born.” Axelrod-Ngo posts comments from the students on a discussion forum that’s part of a Web site run by the Ventura County Office of Education that normally links to an eagle nest on Santa Cruz Island. Wow! Thats a lot of mini wing blings! My Friday night, time for bed! But before I go..... Nature news from Oz Cleaner bitten by snake in Melbourne CBD June 12, 2009 - 12:50PM A snake has bitten a cleaner at the Myer department store in Lonsdale Street, The 29-year old man was putting cardboard in a dumpster outside the store in Melbourne's CBD when he felt something sharp on his finger. "He pulled out his hand and discovered a black-coloured snake about 20 centimetres long hanging off his finger". "He had four puncture wounds to his finger." No more trash digging..... (venom was tested to be a brown snake, 2nd most venomous snake in Oz... but the guy is OK) http://media.smh.com.au/national/breaking-news/snake-bites-man-at-myer-567446.html ps the heart pic of Stef is so sweet |

Delta Mom challenges a human intruder at her nest yesterday ![]() ![]() Image by BET This person had actually rented a scissor fork lift truck and was trying to get pictures 'for her own use' at two nests. She called herself a 'naturalist' She was spoken to by Bev from OWL as well as a representative from Hancock Wildlife about the possible consequences of her actions. They have a mug shot just in case she decides to try something again This illustrates why it is crucial to be vague about the location of nests which are accessible to the public. What this person(s) did is totally against the law in Canada because it is illegal to disturb birds when the nest is active during the breeding season and even when it is not active unless permission is given Thank goodness the Channel Island Eagle nests are for the most part inaccessible

Maybe that backpack is too heavy ![]() Answering this question "How in the world do you get that studio look?" Duane responds...."In photography it's called the 'golden hour'. An hour after sunrise and a few hours before sunset..this is when the light is the best (I call it soft light) and brings out some beautiful colors. Other than that...I just take the picture and hope for the best." He's so modest.... ![]() |

That's my understanding, Julie ... since CafePress is a commercial entity, no way to designate a portion to be credited to the Nest Adoption Challenge. I've renewed 4 memberships so the allowable amount can be credited and talked our home office into 'sponsoring' (not sure that's the exact designation) Pimu/Heidi which goes to NAC and a certain amount is Tax Deductible for them and I'm putting in my order for mini-blings today ... now .... just have to decide which Beanies and which blings ... I would have to take a second job to get all the ones I want
