Eaglepedia Revisited May 15, 2007 Humans take air into their lungs thru their nose/mouth and that same air, after the oxygen is removed, is exhaled a moment later using the same route. So only when we are inhaling, are we taking in oxygen rich air. A bird has air in its lungs at all times making them much more efficient at breathing! Besides the two lungs, the birds have a system of tiny air sacs thru the whole body plus air fills their hollow bones. When air enters the bird thru its nostril, the air fills the lungs and all those sacs and as the air in the lungs is expelled, the air in the sacs replenish it! (like little air reservoirs) http://www.enature.com/articles/detail.asp?storyID=287 ![]() AND May 31, 2007 Humans breathe in with the air returning the same route to exit but birds breathe air that follows a one way route thru their respiratory system, making it extremely efficient. They have two small lungs where gas exchange occurs but they also have air sacs where no gas exchange occurs. The sacs keep the lungs perpetually inflated even when the bird is exhaling. Our lungs fill and empty. The bird takes in air that flows thru the air sacs, some located in their hollow bones, which directs air then into the tube like lungs where gas exchange happens, while both breathing in and out! The bird's respiratory system takes up 20% of a birds's volume (our respiratory system takes up only 5% of our volume). This system increases birds' respiratory efficiency and gives them enough oxygen for flight. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/birds/ ![]() AND May 3, 2008[/b] Someone had asked about smell/breathing/nose so (remember, eagles eat carrion): Located on the upper bill near the base and cere are two large nostril holes called nares. Nares function in much the same way as a nose. Air passes through the nares and travels through the respiratory system until it reaches the lungs. Nares (nostrils) in eagles are large, but the birds still don't have a good sense of smell. This is not critical since eagles hunt exclusively by eyesight. Smell plays no part in food gathering. NOTE: Cere - The waxy, fleshy location of the nostrils, near the base of the upper jaw. Some species, including ospreys, automatically close the cere when entering water. This "skin" is presumed to protect the nostril openings. ![]() Chick (in nest) - Juvenile - Adult - Adult "Majestic Eagles" Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

![]() This presentation is dedicated to K-01, the male half of Catalina's power couple. He is one of the class of 2000, born at the San Francisco Zoo and fostered into the Pinnacle Rocks nest. In 2006 he was one lucky eagle when he inherited the West End nest complete with two lovely ladies, Wray and Dianna. Although Dianna is no longer part of the West End nest, K-01 and Wray now share a happy monogamous life. K-01 AKA SUPERMAN COMES IN FOR A LANDING AT WEST END. Good morning, peeps! Terrific biography on K-01 being #1, Christine! I'm still smiling, see ? He has certainly started a legacy already with seven chicks in three years, what a dedicated eagle dad. I've voted too, very faithfully. ![]() Deb, we had date night watching the movie, and I don't mean DH and me. Ian invited Allison over and all four of us watched it together. Funny how that worked out. All of a sudden she was here! I have to enjoy it as this is a special time, we won't always have the two of them here watching a movie with us. When Amazing Race was on it was the same thing - family night. How did your ice cream turn out? We have an ice cream maker, too. We had given one to my parents for Christmas one year. Now my mother has given it back to me. Will have to figure out how it works. |

Christine - Just love your post today, 01 must feel honored that you paid him such kudos on all his accomplishments. Great photos and your sense of humor just shines. Topa - Your aviary is beautiful, can't wait until your lovebirds are settled in and you take lots of photos of them in their new habitat. Cheryl - There's nothing better than a double date with your children, so happy you and Robert had a nice evening with them. |
