Take off and landing, the time in flight of most danger for an eagle. Lift is the weakest at take off because full speed has not been achieved and at the landing because the speed of the bird is being reduced. The size of the wing is what determines how much lift is made as well as the angle of the wing to the air. This increases the air speed over the wing and produces more lift. Birds change their wing size, lower flaps, open slots, use the wind, and increase their speed by flapping their wings faster. Larger birds have a harder time getting into the air. They need a strong wind or they land on cliffs so they can leap off to begin their next flight.

in case you didn't see WE nest yesterday:

I think Pat posted yesterday - the earlier fledged juvies are of course moving around the island - venturing farther and farther away from their home nests - and will hopefully begin to hook up with the other juvies! they will begin socializing .......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agb3Gef_fCI

pat's clip from yesterday - really good........

Steff's updates will more and more confirm the juvies beginning and continuing to hang together - lots of that took place last year!

Maybe this week's update will show some of that beginning to happen! :><:

great job NO reporters - great captures by all too!

Something to make you :D from Doug Carrick on Tuesday

9:20 am - While Hope and Pa were perched in the Peters' Tree, Ma flew down to the shoreline and dragged a dogfish onto the beach. She flew it to Dinner Rock and began tearing into it. Hope was screeping frantically.

Ma flew away with the dogfish and Pa immediately flew down to the sea, about ten feet from Dinner Rock, dunked into the water and pulled out the tail end of the dogfish (which must have broken off). Pa took this to the beach.

Hope flew down, in a perfectly controlled glide and landed 6 feet from Pa and the fish. She charged forward, knocking Pa back from the fish, took if from him and dragged it 10 feet away, mantling all the time. She is learning all the skills of survival.

....and something to make you :'(

I agree with Deb, great captures from both nests yesterday.

Penny, I always enjoy Doug Carrick's commentary.

I do feel sad that the viewing season everywhere is coming to an end. :(

Whooper Update

Good morning, peeps! I do have some good news for cam viewers who are going into withdrawal. I decided to just share this with a small group since the Operation Migration folks are just getting their cam up and running. Yes, there is a whooper live cam now! :><: :**: It is at the Necedah Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin and is focussed on the Cohort Two chicks. Once in awhile a pair of adults wanders into the picture since they consider this area to be part of their territory. You will also see what looks like an adult bird in the netted area. It is actually a fake role model! The zoomer for the cam is located in the Operation Migration office here in Ontario. Too many viewers could cause them some problems at this point but this is a small group here and I know you all understand about band width usage.

Last evening I watched the chicks begin to roost for the night, preening and playfully poking the fake adult. In the background two free adult whoopers flew over the marsh.

Here is the link: http://www.operationmigration.org/crane-cam.html

Gee, some Cruzers should get together with their wing blings, beanies, and Cruzer gear, revise the words of the Santa Catalina song, and enter their version in the contest.............

Enjoyed the song, thank you Deb.
