Penny - The photos of Azalea are wonderful. What an accomplishment for a juvie to grab the fish in mid air. Topa - Baby Asher is beautiful. Congrats and Mazel Tov to all the family! Cheryl - The colours in the daylily are beautiful, I've never seen one like it before. |

UPDATE ON THE OREGON NEST IMPORTANT ANOUNCEMENT: We are experiencing technical difficulties with the webcam. Due to a thunderstorm in the area of the nest around August 1, we think the camera power supply may have been damaged by lightning. For a few days the camera was not working. As you can see, it is back online but has been knocked sideways. The eagle has been making its first short flights -- back and forth from nest to nearby branch the past couple days (August 6, 2009).... Pengra is now a brancher.........

Saanich/Sydney adults on the nest which is good news for Tiny that they haven't left the area yet to go salmon fishing. Tiny must be out exploring.

Zoo Atlanta Panda Update Friday, August 7 You’ve probably noticed that sometimes when you are watching Panda Cam, the camera isn’t always on Xi Lan. In fact, you may have noticed that the camera is sometimes following Lun Lun instead. This is because Zoo Atlanta staff members collect data six days per week for a number of long-term behavioral studies. When the pandas are in the dayrooms, we use the cameras to remotely monitor their behavior. Because Lun and Xi Lan are housed together, we often need to monitor Lun’s behavior with the camera, instead of keeping the camera on Xi Lan. For example, the other day when I was collecting data on Lun, Xi Lan was off doing his own thing, but I needed to follow Lun so I could record her behavior. Although this resulted in temporarily losing sight of Xi Lan on Panda Cam, he quickly came back into view when he proceeded to initiate play with Lun. Other times, we’ll notice that Yang Yang Yang or Mei Lan are doing something particularly interesting or cute, and we’ll switch the camera to one of them for a while. Even though Xi Lan is the baby, we want to help you keep in touch with the entire panda family! Speaking of family, the giant panda family at the San Diego Zoo has grown again! Congratulations to our colleagues in San Diego (and Bai Yun!) for another successful birth. Beautiful picture of Asher (and I like that name, unusual!) I could eat that flower it looks so scrumptious! Great pics of Azalea.... and thanks for the updates on the nests as usual. Rachel and I drove (3.+ hours) to Canberra midday on Friday and stayed at a nice hotel overnight, just Mom and Daughter. I couldn't convince her to go out on the town on Friday evening, it was really cold (40F) and she had forgotten a warm jacket, so we had dinner in the hotel AFTER having a facial (for her) and pedispa (for me). My feet have never looked so beautiful! LOL. We were a little early for dinner, so we went into the bar area for a drink and ordered mojito (R) and cranberry margarita (me), whilst I was ordering, a woman sitting at the bar with a glass of Champs in front of her overheard me ordering, asked me where I was from and next thing I know had invited herself to sit with us. Well, she was a chatty petite cute little thing and before the end of our drinks I knew the following about her, she grew up in the country, lived in Sydney for a little while but married and lived in Canberra mostly, she (Lyndall) has 3 girls (one is attending Virginia State Uni this year as exchange student) of which one near Rachel's age is an accomplished horse rider, aged 49, a 'Trainer' for the Dept of Foreign Affairs, and cried twice because her husband of 7 years dumped her for a younger 'friend' of hers. I did not offer her to accompany us for dinner! The exhibit was really interesting. The Portrait Gallery used to be housed in Old Parliament House but a new building next to the High Court was finished last year and the Gallery moved to its new home. The Vanity Fair exhibit had a distinctive Australian flair with a lot of Australian notables, this is probably the same for each country it visits. I bought a post card size photo of our favorite, I'll scan and send that one tomorrow (when I'm at the office). http://www.portrait.gov.au/site/vanity_exhib.php |
